A wet dress rehearsal tests whether a rocket, launch pad, ground systems, and launch team can carry out the countdown and fueling procedures needed for launch—without igniting engines or lifting off. Artemis II’s first rehearsal reached the terminal countdown before NASA stopped it at T-5:15 because of a liquid-hydrogen leak. NASA later reported that a second rehearsal succeeded.

What is a wet dress rehearsal?

It is a full-scale run-through of launch preparations using the vehicle and its ground systems. Teams practice the countdown while loading and draining the rocket’s cryogenic propellants. NASA describes this final prelaunch tanking test as a way to check interfaces between the vehicle and ground systems as well as the fueling operation itself: NASA’s Artemis II reference guide.

“Wet” refers to the propellant in the tanks. The rehearsal is not a launch: it stops before engine ignition and liftoff. It is also more than a tank-filling exercise. It tests how the rocket, pad equipment, communications, control-room team, countdown timing, and closeout work together. A theater rehearsal is a useful analogy for the coordination involved, but the technical purpose is to validate launch systems and procedures under realistic conditions.

For the planned SLS core-stage tanking phase before the first Artemis II rehearsal, NASA described loading more than 700,000 gallons of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen combined; that figure describes the planned tanking phase, not the capacity of one tank. NASA’s January 30, 2026 update.

What happened during Artemis II’s rehearsals?

First rehearsal: countdown stopped at T-5:15

NASA’s first Artemis II wet dress rehearsal ran from February 1 to 3, 2026. The team fueled the rocket and reached terminal count, but did not complete the countdown. NASA terminated it at T-5:15 after a liquid-hydrogen leak at the tail service mast umbilical interface. The agency said elevated hydrogen concentrations had also been detected there earlier in the countdown. NASA’s February 3 update.

The distinction matters: reaching terminal count and loading the vehicle were meaningful test results, but they do not mean the rehearsal finished successfully. The leak and other operational issues showed why the integrated run-through matters: it can reveal problems in the connections and procedures that link the rocket to its ground systems.

Seal check: February 12

On February 12, NASA conducted a confidence test to assess replacement seals by partially filling the SLS core-stage liquid-hydrogen tank. A ground-support-equipment problem reduced the flow, and NASA said it was still reviewing the data. The update described March as the earliest potential launch window at that time; that was a contemporaneous outlook, not a current schedule. NASA’s February 12 update.

Second rehearsal: NASA later reported success

NASA’s April technical presentation reports that the second wet dress rehearsal, conducted February 17–19, was successful. It demonstrated hold and recycle capabilities and recorded the lowest liquid-hydrogen leak rates seen in Artemis/SLS history. This later result updates the picture available during the first rehearsal; the presentation does not establish Artemis II’s current launch date or readiness. How is a wet dress rehearsal different from a static fire?

A static fire is an engine test in which the rocket is held down while its engines are fired. A wet dress rehearsal exercises the fueling and countdown process and the broader launch system; it stops short of ignition. They test different things, and a static fire does not require a full wet dress rehearsal.

What a rehearsal can—and cannot—show

A wet dress rehearsal can expose leaks, equipment faults, timing problems, and coordination issues in conditions that closely resemble launch preparations. The first Artemis II run demonstrated that value: fueling and countdown operations surfaced a hydrogen leak before any launch attempt.

A successful rehearsal is evidence that the tested procedures and systems worked in that run; it is not itself a launch, nor does it establish a mission date. NASA’s later report of WDR-2’s success is a dated test result, not confirmation of Artemis II’s status on October 4, 2026. The cited updates do not establish a current launch date or readiness assessment.
