Microsoft PowerToys v0.82.0 is primarily a stability-and-improvements release, not a wholesale redesign. Its most visible additions are random-character and UUID support in PowerRename, broader file parsing in Advanced Paste, and previews for special folders in Peek. The release also fixes several installer, memory, activation and interface problems. Microsoft summarizes the cycle in its v0.82.0 release notes as: “In the v0.82 release cycle, we focused on stability and improvements.”
What PowerToys v0.82.0 actually changes
PowerToys is Microsoft’s free, open-source collection of Windows utilities. Version 0.82.0 adds a handful of practical capabilities while tightening reliability across existing tools. The release notes do not provide a download count, benchmark, performance gain or other statistic that would support calling the update “massive” in a measured sense.

PowerRename gains random characters and UUIDs
PowerRename now supports inserting sequences of random characters and UUIDs while renaming files. This is useful when names need generated identifiers rather than a manually typed replacement: for example, a batch of exported assets can receive unique values without first creating a separate list of names.
How to use the new capability
- Select the files in File Explorer and open PowerRename from the context menu.
- Build the rename expression in the PowerRename window and use its random-character or UUID option where the generated value should appear.
- Review the preview list before applying the operation, then select Rename when the results are correct.
The v0.82.0 notes announce support for these generated sequences but do not document a universal token syntax in the release summary. If an existing expression does not produce the expected output, use the PowerRename help shown in your installed build rather than assuming a pattern copied from another version.

Apostrophes are handled more accurately
Capitalization flags for Capitalize and Titlecase now treat apostrophes more appropriately. Names containing contractions or possessives should therefore receive more natural capitalization than they did before this release.
Advanced Paste broadens structured-text conversion
CSV and plain-text parsing
Advanced Paste improves delimiter handling for CSV input and parsing of plain text when using Paste as JSON. Delimiter-sensitive data is less likely to be interpreted with the wrong column boundaries, while ordinary text has a clearer path into JSON conversion.

INI-to-JSON conversion
Version 0.82.0 adds conversion from INI files to JSON. This can help when configuration data starts in the traditional section-and-key format used by many Windows applications and needs to move into a JSON-based workflow.
AI documentation and policy entry
The release updates the readme and notes to clarify Advanced Paste’s AI use. It also lists a Group Policy rule to disallow online models; the release notes identify that policy entry as a hotfix for 0.81. These documentation and policy changes should not be read as a new privacy certification or as a guarantee that every conversion runs locally. The applicable model and policy behavior depends on the configuration documented for your build.

Clipboard-image memory leak fix
Advanced Paste also receives a fix for a memory leak associated with images in clipboard history. The notes identify the defect and its fix, but do not quantify memory savings or performance improvement.
Peek can preview more Windows locations
Peek adds previews for special folders such as Recycle Bin and My PC. That extends Peek beyond ordinary files and gives you a quick look at these shell locations without opening them in a full Explorer window.

The same release fixes Peek activation while a file is being renamed and resolves a crash involving a COM object. These are targeted reliability corrections rather than a redesigned preview system.
Installer fixes target specific failure modes
User-scope installation
The installer fixes remaining user-scope installation failures caused by inaccessible folders used by DSC modules. This matters when PowerToys is installed for the current Windows account rather than for every user on the machine.

ARM64 uninstall
On ARM64 systems, an uninstall problem could prevent scripts from finding PowerShell 7. Version 0.82.0 corrects that lookup path. The fix is specifically relevant to ARM64 uninstall behavior; it is not evidence that every installation or architecture received the same installer change.
Other reliability and documentation work
- Color Picker and PowerToys Run received interface fixes following the WPF UI upgrade.
- The PowerToys Run plugin listing documentation was updated.
- The release includes additional internal development and maintenance updates that are not individually user-facing.
Should you install v0.82.0?
First check Microsoft’s current documentation and repository, because v0.82.0 is a historical build and a later v0.82.1 patch release exists. The Microsoft Learn PowerToys page provides official product information, while the upstream repository README points to installation methods and current release information.
Reasons this release may matter to you
- You use PowerRename and need generated random characters or UUIDs in file names.
- You convert CSV, plain text or INI configuration data with Advanced Paste.
- You rely on Peek for special folders or encountered its rename-activation or crash problems.
- You install per user, use Windows on ARM64, or experienced one of the documented installer failures.
When not to target this exact build
If you simply want the newest supported PowerToys version, do not treat 0.82.0 as current. Check the upstream release information first and choose the build that matches your Windows architecture and installation scope. Install v0.82.0 specifically only when you need its behavior, are reproducing an issue, or have a compatibility reason to remain on that release line.
