If you want windows to land in custom positions and sizes instead of repeatedly dragging their edges, Microsoft PowerToys FancyZones is likely the tool behind that workflow. It lets you define desktop zones and snap open apps into them. Windows also has built-in Snap layouts for quick, predefined arrangements, so you may not need to install anything for basic tiling.
What is PowerToys FancyZones?
FancyZones is a window-management utility included in Microsoft PowerToys. You create a layout of zones on your desktop, then place windows into those zones so they are positioned and resized to fit. Microsoft describes it as a way to arrange and snap windows into custom layouts; the feature is useful when you want a repeatable arrangement rather than resizing every app by hand. The title’s “Microsoft tool” most likely means FancyZones, but it cannot identify the feature with certainty: Windows’ built-in Snap feature also arranges windows automatically.

Install and open PowerToys, then open FancyZones in PowerToys Settings.

Open the FancyZones layout editor using the shortcut shown in your installed version. The shortcut can be changed in PowerToys Settings, so check the current setting rather than assuming it is the same on every installation.

Choose or create a layout with zones where you want your windows to sit.

Drag an open window into a zone to place and resize it. FancyZones also supports activating placement with keyboard shortcuts; consult the documentation for the shortcut and behavior in your version.

Microsoft’s documentation describes the layout editor, custom zones, and window placement in its FancyZones guide. Exact settings and shortcuts may vary by PowerToys version.

FancyZones or Windows Snap: which should you use?

For basic tiling, use Snap: Microsoft documents selecting a predefined layout and snapping the active app with the Windows logo key plus an arrow key. Its Snap windows support page covers mouse, touch, and keyboard methods.
Choose FancyZones when the predefined arrangements are not the shapes or positions you want and you need your own zone layout. The documented feature differences do not establish that one option is universally faster or better.

When Workspaces is a better fit
FancyZones positions windows that are open. If you also want to capture and relaunch a group of apps, PowerToys Workspaces is the broader workflow to consider. Microsoft’s Windows developer documentation says Workspaces can capture and relaunch apps in arranged positions and uses FancyZones for positioning. See Microsoft’s Workspaces documentation.
Does FancyZones save time?
FancyZones can reduce repetitive manual resizing by placing windows into zones, but the official feature pages cited here do not provide an attributable figure for time saved, productivity gained, or user adoption. Whether it saves time for you depends on how often you reuse a layout and how well the zones fit your work.
