Start with PowerPoint’s built-in templates and themes: open File > New to browse free options, or use Microsoft Create for a broader collection. Choose a design that fits the presentation’s job, then adapt its layouts, colors, and placeholders to your message. If you need more variety, a paid library is another option—but the template is a framework, not a substitute for clear content.
Where to find free PowerPoint templates
In PowerPoint, go to File > New to browse pre-built templates. You can preview a template before creating a new presentation, then customize the resulting file. Microsoft also directs users to Microsoft Create for a larger collection of templates. Microsoft’s instructions for downloading free pre-built templates cover this process.
For a background-led design, choose File > New and search for “Themes,” “Backgrounds for PowerPoint slides,” or a subject such as “Business.” Preview the slides and select Create to start from that design. See Microsoft’s background-template instructions.
Choose a design for the presentation’s job
Match the template to the deliverable rather than choosing by appearance alone. A business update, pitch deck, lesson, and portfolio can call for different slide types and visual emphasis. Before committing, check whether the design gives you layouts for the content you actually need—such as a title, agenda, comparison, chart, or image—and whether its fonts, colors, and imagery can be adapted.
#1 Best Overall
- For a quick, general-purpose deck: Start with a built-in Microsoft template or theme and adjust the layouts to fit your material.
- For a specific deliverable: Search by purpose, such as a proposal, lecture, portfolio, or pitch, and inspect the included slide layouts.
- For recurring presentations: Use or create a reusable template so the same framework can be applied consistently.
- For team or company work: Prefer an approved organization template if one is available, rather than recreating brand styling independently.
A coordinated design can make slides feel consistent, but it cannot decide what belongs in the presentation. Microsoft’s quick-start guidance describes using a theme, layouts, and optional transitions to establish a framework; the content still needs to be written and organized for the audience.
Theme or template: which do you need?
A theme coordinates a slide deck’s colors, fonts, and effects. A template includes a theme and also provides placeholders that suggest what content to add and where. If you only need a visual treatment, a theme may be enough. If you want a reusable deck structure with prompts and layouts, choose a template.
Rank #2
You can save a custom slide design as a .potx template and reuse it from File > New, in the Personal or Custom templates area depending on your PowerPoint version and setup. Microsoft explains the distinction and the save process in its guide to saving a slide design as a template.
Using templates in PowerPoint for the web
PowerPoint for the web offers standard Microsoft 365 design templates through File > New > Browse templates. It does not open .potx files directly. To use a custom .potx online, Microsoft’s documented workaround is:
- Open the
.potxfile in PowerPoint desktop for Windows or Mac. - Save it as a PowerPoint Presentation (
.pptx). - Put the
.pptxin OneDrive or another online storage location, then open it in PowerPoint for the web.
See Microsoft’s guidance on templates in PowerPoint for the web.
When to use an organization template
If your organization provides approved templates, use one for presentations that must follow its branding. Microsoft documents organization template libraries for PowerPoint on Windows, Mac, and the web, with a Microsoft 365 E3 or E5 plan required for the feature. Microsoft also cautions that Design Suggestions do not work with every custom template and may not offer suggestions for every slide. Details are in Microsoft’s organization-template instructions.

A paid library can be useful when the built-in collection does not offer the visual style or range of layouts you need. Envato describes presentation templates for uses including business proposals, lectures, portfolios, and pitch decks. Its Elements offering is subscription-based; its presentation-template page also identifies GraphicRiver for one-time purchases. Catalogs, prices, and subscription terms can change, so check the vendor’s current pages for PowerPoint templates and presentation templates before choosing.

Envato says Elements items are licensed for a specific project and require an active subscription to download and license.
