Power over HDBaseT (PoH) carries DC power alongside data over a single HDBaseT category cable. The HDBaseT Alliance describes it as based on IEEE 802.3at, with modifications that allow up to 100 W across four cable pairs and distances up to 100 m. That 100 W figure is a source-side headline rating, not a promise that a device at the far end receives 100 W.

How Power over HDBaseT works

HDBaseT carries signals such as audio and video over category cable. PoH adds DC power to that link, so compatible equipment can send power and data over one cable rather than requiring a separate power connection. The Alliance describes PoH as supporting up to 100 W over all four pairs at distances up to 100 m. HDBaseT Alliance: Introduction to Power over HDBaseT

PoH is a feature of an HDBaseT link, not a guarantee that any Ethernet cable, injector, switch, or powered device will work together. Endpoint support and the required power-delivery behavior matter.

What power reaches the remote device?

Power ratings depend on where they are measured. In a 2020 comparison, Microchip lists these figures for HDBaseT Type 3:

#1 Best Overall

  • OREI HDBaseT models are designed to work only with their own matching transmitter and receiver. They are not interchangeable with other OREI HDBaseT models, nor compatible with HDBaseT devices from other brands, due to chipset differences. For best results, always use the included or recommended pair from the same model.
  • Complete OREI Professional Solution | Backed by full OREI support and a 1-Year Warranty for peace of mind | Package includes: 1x HDMI Transmitter, 1x HDMI Receiver, 1x Power Adapter (PoC-enabled), 1x Bi-directional IR Kit, 1x Set of Mounting Ears, and a User Manual for easy setup and installation.
Configuration or measurement point Power figure
Two-pair PoH Type 3, PSE output 47.5 W
Four-pair PoH Type 3, PSE output 95 W
Four-pair HDBaseT Type 3, powered-device input after a 100 m cable 72.4 W guaranteed

These are the values in Microchip’s application-note comparison, not a universal measurement of every PoH installation. The PSE output is the power sent from the supplying equipment; the powered-device input is what remains available at the receiving end after cable losses. The Alliance’s “up to 100 W” description should therefore not be read as 100 W guaranteed at a remote device. Microchip, Designing a PoE PD Using PD702x0 and PD701x0 (2020)

Why PoH needs compatible equipment

PoH has specific classification behavior. Microchip’s application note says PoH Type 3 classification is mandatory; the powered device recognizes three-event classification and an HDBaseT flag. This is why a generic Power over Ethernet (PoE) injector or switch should not be assumed to substitute for PoH equipment: the available documentation describes PoH-specific signaling, not universal cross-compatibility.

  • What You Get: HDMI transmitter and receiver, IR TX/RX cables, power adapter, mounting kit and user manual; Backed by 12-month warranty and OREI tech support; OREI HDBaseT Extenders models only work with their matching transmitter and receiver. They are not interchangeable with other OREI or third-party HDBaseT devices due to chipset differences

When comparing equipment, check that the supplying and powered endpoints explicitly support PoH, that their classification requirements match, and that the power available at the device input meets its stated need. PoH’s supported current also affects cabling: Microchip says PoH follows IEEE 802.3at Type 2 cable types, while its higher supported current limits how many cables can be placed in a bundle.

Choosing cable for a PoH installation

Cable must support both power carriage and HDBaseT signal performance over the planned route. The Alliance and UL announced a cable-certification program in 2017 intended to evaluate both. The announcement described evaluation under the then soon-to-be-published UL 4299 Outline of Investigation, with inspections and ongoing testing as part of cable surveillance. It is historical context, not confirmation of the current status of UL 4299 or proof that a particular cable listing is certified. HDBaseT Alliance and UL cable-certification announcement (February 7, 2017)

  1. Check the exact transmitter, receiver, source, or sink documentation for PoH support and power requirements.
  2. Confirm the route length and the power expected at the receiving device, allowing for the difference between source output and powered-device input.
  3. Select cable suitable for the installation’s power and HDBaseT data requirements; verify specific certification claims against current documentation rather than relying on a generic cable description.
  4. Consult the HDBaseT Alliance’s product catalogue and the equipment makers’ documentation when validating product compatibility. HDBaseT Alliance

PoH in one sentence

Power over HDBaseT is a way for compatible HDBaseT equipment to deliver DC power and data over one category cable; its usable remote power depends on the configuration, cable run, and endpoint requirements.
