If you need to charge a phone while you are away from an outlet, a separate 10,000 mAh power bank is the better travel choice. A phone with a 10,000 mAh built-in battery can run that phone longer, but its battery is already powering the phone; it does not automatically provide charge to another device.
Which is better depends on what you need to keep charged

A phone can charge another device only if that specific model supports a suitable reverse-charging or power-sharing feature. No phone model is specified here, so its support, capacity, weight, or ability to recharge another device cannot be assumed.
Does 10,000 mAh mean the same thing in a phone and a power bank?
No. The mAh label alone does not establish equal usable energy or an equal number of phone charges. Battery energy depends on voltage; the Federal Aviation Administration explains the conversion as watt-hours (Wh) = volts (V) × amp-hours (Ah). Convert mAh to Ah by dividing by 1,000, then multiply by voltage. See the FAA’s watt-hour calculation guidance.

Energy delivered to the phone is also affected by conversion losses and the phone’s charging behavior. Without a specified phone, voltage, measured output, and efficiency data, an exact charge count cannot be established.

Can I take a 10,000 mAh power bank on a plane?
U.S. passenger-flight baseline
Under the FAA’s passenger guidance, spare lithium batteries—including power banks and portable chargers—must go in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries up to 100 Wh are allowed; those from 101 to 160 Wh require airline approval, and no more than two larger spare lithium-ion batteries may be carried per person. Airlines can impose stricter limits. Check the bank’s printed Wh rating rather than estimating it from mAh alone. See the FAA’s lithium-battery passenger guidance.
Airline and international handling rules
Rules can vary by carrier and change over time. The IATA passenger guidance dated 31 March 2026 limits passengers to two lithium-ion power banks no greater than 100 Wh each, says not to recharge them from aircraft power or store them in overhead lockers, and advises against using them to power devices during taxi, take-off, or landing. IATA also notes airlines may set stricter conditions; check the operating airline’s current policy for the requirements that apply to your trip.

Carrier instructions illustrate why it is worth checking directly: ITA Airways’ published rules prohibit power banks in checked baggage or inside checked baggage, provide hand-baggage handling instructions, and require authorization for banks above 100 Wh and up to 160 Wh.

Do not fly with a visibly damaged, swollen, or recalled power bank. The FAA identifies damage, overheating, water exposure, overcharging, inadequate protection, and manufacturing defects among lithium-battery risks. Damaged or recalled batteries that may spark or generate dangerous heat must not be carried unless they have been removed or made safe. See the FAA’s battery safety guidance.

What to choose for a trip
- Choose a separate power bank if you expect to need charge away from outlets. Before traveling, check its rated Wh, ports, output compatibility, and your airline’s rules.
- Rely on a phone’s larger built-in battery if your main goal is longer runtime for that phone and you do not need a separate source to charge other devices.
- For both longer phone runtime and charging flexibility, these are different functions: a large phone battery does not replace a power bank unless the specific phone supports suitable power sharing.
