Astronomers have identified HD 156295 b as a possible giant planet in the habitable zone of HD 156295, an A-type star whose surface is roughly 2,000°C hotter than the Sun’s. The planet is a candidate, not a confirmed discovery: the study infers it from changes in the timing of the star’s pulsations. If confirmed, the study authors say HD 156295 would be the hottest star known to host a habitable-zone planet.
Is the planet confirmed?
No. The 2026 study reports HD 156295 b as a planet candidate, based on a fit to variations in the timing of its host star’s pulsations. Its estimated mass is 6.3 ± 1.1 Jupiter masses, an inference rather than a direct measurement. The authors say that astrometric follow-up could confirm and further characterize the candidate. The Astrophysical Journal paper describes the result conditionally: “If confirmed, HD 156295 would be the hottest star to host a habitable-zone planet.”
How did astronomers find it?
The study uses pulsation timing, a technique that treats a pulsating star’s regular brightness changes as a clock. If the star moves as a companion orbits it, the distance its light travels to Earth changes slightly. That can shift the observed arrival times of the pulsation signals. Researchers fit orbital models to those timing variations to infer a possible companion.
The authors analyzed 16,440 δ Scuti pulsators observed by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). They report one planet candidate—HD 156295 b—and eight candidate brown dwarfs. The result is an inference from timing variations, not a direct image of the planet or a reported observation of it crossing its star. The paper says the candidate is consistent with available Hipparcos–Gaia astrometric-acceleration constraints; further astrometric observations could test the interpretation.

What does “habitable zone” mean here?
The habitable zone is the range of orbits where a star’s energy could allow liquid water under suitable conditions. In this report, the term describes the candidate’s inferred orbital location relative to HD 156295. It does not show that the planet has liquid water, a suitable atmosphere, or life.
HD 156295 b is described as a giant planet candidate, not an Earth-like world. Likewise, the “about 2,000 degrees hotter” comparison refers to the star’s surface temperature relative to the Sun—not to the candidate’s temperature. The contemporary report gives the comparison in degrees Celsius. FOX Weather’s October 5, 2026 report provides accessible context and also notes the need for confirmation.

What else does the study estimate?
The paper also gives a model-dependent occurrence-rate estimate for 5–10 Jupiter-mass planets with periods of 1,900–2,600 days around A-type stars: η = 0.10, with a reported interval of −0.08/+0.21. Under the alternative assumption that HD 156295 b is a false positive, the authors give 1σ and 2σ upper limits of 19% and 39%, respectively. These are population inferences under stated assumptions, not precise measured frequencies or confirmation of this individual candidate.
What happens next?
Astrometric follow-up is the next step identified by the study authors. It could establish whether the timing signal is caused by an orbiting planet and help characterize the candidate. Until that confirmation, the finding remains a promising candidate rather than a confirmed planet discovery.
