Watt-hours (Wh) tell you how much energy a portable power station stores; watts (W) tell you how much power it can deliver or how quickly a device uses it. To judge whether a station will run your appliances, compare both its usable energy and its continuous output with your devices’ running and startup needs. A Wh rating alone does not guarantee a particular AC runtime.
What do watt-hours and watts mean?
Watt-hours measure energy; watts measure power. A station rated in Wh or kWh has a stated quantity of stored energy. One kilowatt-hour (kWh) equals 1,000 watt-hours. The rating does not tell you the maximum load the station can deliver at one moment.
Watts describe a rate: an appliance drawing 100 W uses energy faster than one drawing 50 W. All else equal, a larger energy capacity can run the same load longer, while a higher output rating can support a larger load. These are separate specifications.
Which power-station ratings determine whether your appliance will work?
Continuous AC output
Continuous AC output is the manufacturer-rated limit for ongoing AC power delivery. Check the appliance’s wattage and the combined wattage of devices you plan to run at the same time. The total must stay within the station’s continuous output. EcoFlow explains that an appliance above the unit’s output rating cannot be run and that simultaneous loads must remain within the maximum output (EcoFlow’s guide to portable power station specs).

A high-capacity battery can still be a poor match for a high-wattage appliance if its inverter’s continuous output is too low. Compare the output figure, not just the capacity.
Surge or startup power
Some appliances, particularly those with motors or other inductive loads, may draw more power briefly when starting than while running. Check the appliance’s nameplate or manual and the exact station’s documentation for its surge or startup rating and the duration that rating applies. Do not assume a short-term surge allowance can be sustained continuously.

Charging input
Charging input, also measured in watts, describes how quickly energy can enter the station under specified conditions. It is not the same as the AC output available to appliances. If recharge speed matters, check the exact model’s supported input and the conditions attached to the stated maximum.

Expandable capacity
Some stations support additional batteries or linked units. Compatibility is model-specific, and expansion may affect capacity, output, or both. Check the product documentation for the particular station and accessory rather than assuming one model’s options apply to an entire brand.

How do you estimate whether a station can run your devices?
- List the devices and their wattages. Read each appliance’s nameplate or manual. Include devices that will run simultaneously, not only the single largest appliance. Jackery’s buying guide recommends checking appliance wattage and choosing output above the appliance requirement.
- Check running and startup loads. Make sure the ongoing combined load fits within the station’s continuous output. For devices with a higher startup draw, compare that demand with the station’s documented surge rating and duration.
- Estimate runtime with usable energy. Divide the station’s usable or converted energy in Wh by the appliance’s average power in W. Jackery states the relationship as operating time (hours) = rated energy capacity after conversion (Wh) ÷ appliance power (W) (Jackery’s explanation of startup and continuous power).
- Allow for real operating conditions. The calculation is an estimate, not a guaranteed AC runtime. Conversion and operating losses, changing loads, reserve settings, or automatic shutdown behavior can reduce the time available.
- Check connections and practical fit. Confirm the outlet type, voltage, USB or DC ports, charging inputs, expansion support, size, and weight against how and where you plan to use the station.
Illustrative arithmetic, not a product test: 500 Wh of usable output divided by a steady 100 W load equals five hours by simple division. A real station’s AC runtime may be shorter, and startup peaks or changing loads can alter the result.
What should you compare between power stations?
Start with the two questions that determine basic suitability: will the station run the intended devices, and for about how long? Then check the details that affect convenience and fit.

Specifications, accessory compatibility, availability, and prices can vary by model, region, and revision. Confirm the current regional listing and detailed documentation before buying or quoting a figure.
How do manufacturer specifications illustrate the difference?
Manufacturer figures show why capacity and output should be read separately. Jackery’s buying guide lists the Explorer 1000 v2 at 1,070 Wh capacity and 1,500 W AC output. Those are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent measurements; verify the exact current regional listing.

EcoFlow’s DELTA Pro product page describes capacity starting at 3.6 kWh and an AC output range of 3,600 W–7,200 W. The page associates higher-output scenarios with configured features and linked equipment, so the 7,200 W figure should not be treated as an ordinary standalone continuous rating without checking the setup conditions and detailed specification.
Model figures are not interchangeable across a product lineup. For example, Jackery’s Explorer 5000 Plus support page provides model-specific battery and solar-input information; it is not a basis for assuming the same inputs or accessories work with other stations.
