For a dedicated laptop display, a portable monitor is usually the more direct choice—if your laptop can send video to it and you can meet its power requirements. A tablet makes more sense when you already own a compatible one, want touch or pen input, or will use it for other tasks too. The key difference is that a monitor is designed to receive a display signal; a tablet needs a supported feature or software to act as an external screen.

When a portable monitor works better
Choose a portable monitor if you want a screen whose main job is to display your laptop’s output, and your computer and the monitor have compatible video connections. The usual advantage is a more direct setup: connect the laptop’s video output to the monitor’s video input, then arrange the display in your operating system.
Before buying, check the laptop’s exact ports and the monitor’s inputs. A USB-C connector’s shape does not prove that it carries video. If the laptop and monitor do not both support video over USB-C, you may need a compatible HDMI or mini-HDMI connection instead. Confirm that the cable supports video, not just charging or data, and check whether the monitor needs a separate power source.
A monitor is also the more straightforward option when you do not need tablet functions such as touch, a pen, or standalone apps. Touch is model-specific, so do not assume a portable monitor has it.

When a tablet works better
A tablet can be a practical second screen when you already have a model supported by your computer’s display feature, or when the tablet’s independent uses justify carrying it. Touch and pen input can help with interaction or annotation on supported setups. Samsung describes these functions for compatible Galaxy Tab Second Screen configurations, but that does not establish comparative latency or guarantee identical behavior in every app.
It is usually a weaker purchase if the only reason to buy the tablet is to use it as a monitor. First confirm that the exact tablet and computer work together; then weigh the tablet’s other uses against the added setup, positioning, and power considerations. No category-wide price comparison establishes that a tablet or portable monitor is always cheaper.

Check compatibility before choosing
Portable monitor: confirm video and power
- Identify the laptop’s video output and the monitor’s video input. Do not infer video support from a USB-C port alone.
- Check the cable’s video capability and whether you need USB-C, HDMI, mini-HDMI, or an adapter.
- Review how the monitor is powered: from the host, from a separate supply, or from an internal battery, depending on the model.
- Plan how you will position it. Size, weight, stands, and included cables differ by product.

Samsung’s support pages describe different device lists and connection requirements by region and feature version. They should not be treated as one universal compatibility list.

- Samsung Korea USB guidance: Samsung Electronics Service Korea lists Galaxy Tab S11, S10, S9, S8, S7, and selected Active models on One UI 5.1.1 or later. It says the PC needs Wireless Display support, notes Samsung computers are optimized and other PC models may have limitations, and describes an experimental USB connection requiring Windows 11 24H2 and One UI 7.0 or later. These are Korea-specific support details, not a global guarantee. See Samsung Korea’s supported-device and USB requirements.
Samsung’s wireless instructions require using the tablet’s Second Screen feature and connecting through a supported PC workflow; the tablet is not simply a wired monitor because it has USB-C. For a USB connection, follow only a route documented for your region and the exact devices involved.

iPad: check Apple’s Sidecar requirements
Apple supports using an iPad as a second display for a Mac through Sidecar, but compatibility depends on the specific iPad and Mac. Check Apple’s current requirements before relying on it; do not assume every Apple device combination is supported. Review Apple’s Sidecar requirements.
Third-party software: verify support and terms
Third-party software may provide another route when built-in support does not cover your device combination. Duet Display’s help material explains how to choose Extend for second-monitor use and adjust available resolution and frame-rate settings. Before installing or recommending it for your setup, confirm current device support, installation steps, permissions, availability, and commercial terms with the vendor. How to make the decision
- Start with what you own. If you already have a tablet, check whether its built-in second-screen feature works with your laptop before buying a separate display.
- Verify the connection. For a monitor, confirm laptop video output, monitor input, cable capability, and power. For a tablet, confirm the exact model, operating-system requirements, computer support, region-specific guidance, and whether the route is wireless or USB.
- Decide whether touch or pen matters. If you need those functions, verify that the specific monitor supports touch or that your tablet’s supported feature provides the interaction you want.
- Consider the whole carry setup. Account for the screen, cables, power supply, tablet stand or case, and how each device will sit beside your laptop. There is no category-wide weight or packed-size comparison.
- Compare value based on your use. A tablet has more value when you will use it independently; a portable monitor is easier to justify when you specifically need a dedicated display. Check current model-level specifications and prices rather than assuming a category-wide winner.
What specifications cannot settle on their own
Brightness, color accuracy, viewing angles, refresh rate, latency, battery impact, packed size, and price vary by model and setup. The available support and product guidance does not provide a controlled, representative comparison across those categories. Use current specifications for the models you are considering, and distinguish manufacturer claims from independent test results.
