Before connecting a portable monitor, confirm that the computer can send video through the chosen port, the monitor accepts that signal, the cable supports the connection, and the power source meets the monitor’s requirements. USB-C describes a connector, not a guarantee of video. For a two-screen desktop, select an extended display arrangement; daisy chaining requires additional compatibility checks.
Check that both devices support video over the selected connection
Start with the exact computer and monitor models, not the connector shape. A USB-C port may carry power or data without carrying video. For a USB-C video connection, the computer generally needs DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP Alt Mode) or a compatible Thunderbolt connection, and the monitor’s USB-C input must accept video. ASUS explains the distinction in its USB-C display support guidance; Dell states the host-port requirement for the C1422H, P1424H, and Pro P 14 Portable Monitor P1425 in its no-video guidance.
Check the computer’s specifications or manual for the port’s capabilities, and the monitor’s manual for its inputs. Also distinguish a USB-C port intended for power input from one that accepts a video signal. If USB-C video is unavailable, an alternate input such as HDMI may work when both devices support it; confirm the specific connection and any power needs in the manuals.

Use the cable supplied with the monitor when possible. If replacing it, check that the cable supports the required video path and power delivery rather than assuming every USB-C cable is interchangeable. Dell specifies USB-C to USB-C for USB-C video on the C1422H, P1424H, and Pro P 14 Portable Monitor P1425. Follow the instructions for your own model if they differ.

Connection methods can also determine whether software is needed. ASUS describes DP Alt Mode video as plug-and-play, while its USB 3.0 DisplayLink approach requires a driver. Confirm which method your monitor uses and follow the manufacturer’s driver instructions; do not install DisplayLink software simply because a monitor connects over USB.
Plan power for the monitor and any pass-through charging
Portable monitors vary in how they draw power: a model may run from the computer, require an adapter, or pass power through to charge the computer. Check the monitor’s specifications for its input and power requirements, then compare them with the adapter’s output and the needs of any connected device.

For one model-specific example, ASUS recommends an adapter of at least 30 W for the ZenScreen MB16NCG and an adapter over 80 W to support that model’s maximum 65 W laptop charging through pass-through. These figures apply to the MB16NCG, not portable monitors generally; ASUS advises checking the purchased model’s specification sheet in its power pass-through guidance.
Requirements can differ substantially between models. The ASUS PA169CDV user guide, for example, specifies a source device with DP Alt Mode and at least 15 W PD output for single-cable USB-C use, and suggests a USB-certified Type-C 4K cable rated for 4 A or more. Treat those as PA169CDV-specific requirements, not general rules for USB-C monitors.

Choose an extended desktop for separate workspace
After connecting the screen, use your operating system’s display settings to choose an extended desktop if you want each screen to show a different workspace. This differs from mirroring, which duplicates the same image. Menu names and steps vary by operating-system version, so consult current Windows, macOS, or other OS documentation for the exact path. Dell’s daisy-chain guide points Windows users to Extended Mode.
Verify compatibility before daisy chaining
Daisy chaining is not a feature of every portable monitor or computer port. Dell identifies these supported connection approaches in its guide:

Confirm that the computer, first monitor, and any downstream monitor support the required chain. Dell also says to provide a separate power cable to each monitor; do not assume the first monitor will power the rest.

- Make sure the monitor is powered on and set to the input you are using.
- Check the computer’s manual or official specifications to verify that the selected port supports video through DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt, rather than only USB data or power.
- Confirm that the monitor’s selected input accepts video over that connection.
- Use the model-recommended cable. For USB-C video on Dell C1422H, P1424H, and Pro P 14 Portable Monitor P1425, Dell specifies USB-C to USB-C.
- Provide external power if the monitor or connected devices require it, and check the adapter against the model’s stated requirements.
- If the monitor uses USB 3.0 DisplayLink, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for its driver.
- If the selected host port cannot output video, try another input supported by both devices or use a compatible setup.

When choosing between possible configurations, check each as a complete signal-and-power path:

- Whether the connection uses DP Alt Mode, DisplayLink, or another method the devices support.
- Whether the computer output and monitor input are compatible.
- Whether the cable supports the required video and power capabilities.
- Whether the monitor needs an external adapter or provides pass-through charging, and what wattage its model specifies.
- Whether the connection method requires a driver.
- For a daisy chain, whether the required MST or Thunderbolt support is present and each monitor has separate power.
These checks establish compatibility; they do not identify a universally best connection or a model-by-model performance winner. For a particular laptop-and-monitor pairing, consult both manufacturers’ current specifications for supported resolution and refresh rate, power, display-count limits, and operating-system requirements.
