The key difference is that 2181 is commonly used for ZooKeeper client connections, while 9092 is a common Kafka broker listener port. A Kafka coordinator is not a port or another name for ZooKeeper: it is a broker endpoint that Kafka identifies through its FindCoordinator protocol. Port numbers and scan totals can suggest what a service might be, but they do not prove what software is running.
What do the 2,404,811 and 1,381,208 results represent?
A 2026 DEV Community article by OnaEiuspkz reported that ZoomEye returned these results during queries run on September 26, 2026, between 04:33 and 04:38 Beijing time (September 25, 20:33–20:38 UTC):
| Query | Reported results | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
port="2181" |
2,404,811 | Results matching the port query; not a verified count of ZooKeeper installations. |
port="9092" |
1,381,208 | Results matching the port query; not a verified count of Kafka brokers. |
service="kafka" |
73,000 | Results identified by the service query; the article does not establish that this is a directly comparable census to either port query. |
These are figures reported by the article, not a live total or an independently reproduced scan. Index results can change over time. A port match does not by itself identify the program or version, show whether authentication or authorization is configured, establish that the system is production infrastructure, or prove that a client can complete a meaningful application-protocol exchange. What does port 2181 usually mean?
Port 2181 is conventionally used for ZooKeeper client connections. The ZooKeeper getting-started guide, for example, shows a client connecting to 127.0.0.1:2181. That makes 2181 a useful clue, not a unique identifier: a response on that port alone does not prove ZooKeeper is running. ZooKeeper 3.3.3 Getting Started Guide.

What is usually running on port 9092?
Port 9092 appears in Kafka broker listener examples. Kafka’s configuration documentation gives CLIENT://0.0.0.0:9092 as an example listener. Kafka listener addresses and ports are configurable, however, so a broker can use a different port, and a response on 9092 is not conclusive evidence of Kafka. Apache Kafka broker listener configuration.
What is the difference between a Kafka coordinator and a broker?
A broker is a Kafka server that accepts client connections and participates in the Kafka cluster. A coordinator is a broker endpoint carrying out a particular coordination role. Kafka’s FindCoordinator protocol returns the coordinator’s node ID, hostname, and port, so a client can contact that broker endpoint for the relevant coordination work. Apache Kafka protocol: FindCoordinator.
ZooKeeper is a separate coordination service, historically associated with its own client port such as 2181. The shared word “coordinator” does not make ZooKeeper the Kafka coordinator, and 2181 is not the Kafka coordinator port. In short: Kafka’s coordinator is a broker endpoint; ZooKeeper is a distinct service.
Why are there more port results than Kafka service results?
The queries measure different things. A port query can return systems that respond on a particular port without confirming which service produced the response. A service query attempts to identify a service, so its result set can be smaller. The reported totals are not proof that the remaining port matches are Kafka, nor that every Kafka service result is a separate, publicly usable broker. Differences in query behavior, identification, and scan timing also matter; the article’s figures should not be treated as a matched, exhaustive inventory.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does an open Kafka-related port mean a broker is exposed or insecure?
No. A port match alone does not establish that a system is reachable for useful Kafka operations or that it lacks access controls. Security depends on the listener’s actual configuration and the surrounding network controls. Kafka supports different security protocols, including SSL and SASL variants, as well as PLAINTEXT. Its configuration documentation states: “The plaintext protocol provides no security and does not require any additional configuration.” That describes PLAINTEXT, not every listener on port 9092. Apache Kafka listener configuration.
For assets you own or are authorized to administer, check the configured listener address, port, security protocol, authentication and authorization settings, and network access rules. Kafka’s configurable listeners mean that verifying the configuration is more reliable than inferring a service or its security from a port number.
