Neither porcelain nor resin is automatically tougher or more detailed. Porcelain has a hard, glassy surface but is brittle; “resin” covers different formulations and constructions. When choosing a collectible, inspect the individual figure’s delicate projections, joins, base, and finish, then follow the maker’s care instructions.
Which material is more durable?
There is no universal winner. The Canadian Conservation Institute describes porcelain as hard, glassy, and nonporous, but also very brittle and likely to break. Hardness is not impact resistance: a polished porcelain figure is not drop-proof. The Canadian Conservation Institute’s guidance on cleaning ceramics and glass explains both properties.
“Resin” alone does not identify a figure’s exact formulation or construction, so the label cannot establish how it will withstand a knock. In either material, a long, thin horn, wing, weapon, strand, or other projection can be vulnerable. The exact sculpt and how it is assembled matter more than a broad material label.
What to inspect on a figure
- Long or thin features that could catch on a hand, shelf, or cloth.
- Narrow joins, separately attached parts, and accessory connections.
- How the figure attaches to its base and whether the base sits securely.
- Whether the pose leaves delicate details exposed to accidental contact.
- How often you expect to handle, move, or dust the piece.
There is no controlled comparison here that ranks porcelain against all resin collectibles by breakage rate or lifespan. Assess the individual object and the way you plan to display and maintain it.

Which material shows more detail?
Neither material guarantees finer detail. Lladró describes some porcelain sculptures with individual flower petals shaped and assembled separately; that is an example of porcelain craftsmanship, not proof of a universal advantage. Resin figures are also made with detailed sculpts, but the available sources do not establish a controlled, general comparison.
Inspect the actual figure: facial features, small ornaments, crisp edges, paint application, and how separate parts meet. Consider detail separately from toughness—a finely sculpted piece may have slender features that are easy to damage. Lladró’s porcelain-care guidance includes its description of porcelain sculpting and care.

How should you care for a collectible?
Start with the instructions for the exact figure. Surface and decoration make a difference: glazed, bisque, painted, metallic, or embellished finishes may not tolerate the same cleaning method. Museum conservation guidance can provide context, but it is not a substitute for the maker’s product-specific directions. The National Park Service’s curatorial-care reference for ceramics and glass is conservation guidance, not a cleaning manual for every collectible.
Dusting and embellished pieces
Hamilton Collection recommends a soft cloth, small soft paintbrush or makeup brush, or puffs of air for dusting most of its collectibles. For embellished porcelain with simulated jewels, feathers, fabric, or leather, it advises hand-dusting only, and warns against washing fine collectibles in a dishwasher. These are Hamilton Collection’s recommendations, not guarantees for other makers’ pieces. Read Hamilton Collection’s care guidance and check the instructions for your figure.

Porcelain without metallic finishes
Lladró says its porcelain sculptures without metallic finishes can be cleaned with lukewarm water and a few drops of neutral soap; it suggests a soft brush for details. For metallic finishes or lusters, Lladró recommends very soft dry dusting and warns against pressure on delicate details. It also says not to put its sculptures in a dishwasher or microwave. These directions apply to Lladró sculptures; do not assume another maker’s figure has the same finish or care requirements. Check Lladró’s instructions for the full guidance.
Glazed and bisque decoration
Royal Copenhagen distinguishes glazed decoration from bisque figurines. Its guidance notes that bisque has a rough surface that can collect dirt, and that a figurine’s thin, fragile areas can be damaged during washing. This is another reason not to treat “porcelain care” as one universal method. See Royal Copenhagen’s care and cleaning advice for its products.

How to choose between two specific collectibles
- Inspect the sculpt. Look for slender projections, narrow joins, and exposed details that might be knocked or caught during dusting.

- Examine detail and finish separately. Compare the actual features and paintwork, then note any metallic, bisque, glazed, or embellished surfaces that may affect care.
- Match the piece to your habits. Consider the planned display location and how often you will handle or clean it.
- Read the maker’s instructions. Confirm suitable dusting or cleaning methods for that exact figure before applying water, pressure, or a brush.
