Pop!_OS 20.04 was a polished Ubuntu-derived desktop with useful keyboard controls, optional automatic window tiling, and graphics-management tools—especially appealing to users who wanted Ubuntu compatibility with System76’s workflow changes. It was not objectively the best Ubuntu-based distribution for everyone: tiling could take adjustment, much of the system depended on Ubuntu, and the 20.04 release is now historical. Check its maintenance status before installing it for ongoing use.

What Pop!_OS 20.04 was

Released in 2020, Pop!_OS 20.04 was based on Ubuntu 20.04 and used GNOME 3.36 with System76’s desktop customizations. It kept Ubuntu’s familiar software foundation while adding a distinct installer, Pop!_Shell workflow features, graphics controls, and Pop!_Shop. System76 describes the distribution as more than a reskin; its support page says, “To call it a re-skinned Ubuntu brushes over all of the features and quality-of-life improvements that Pop!_OS developers work diligently to create.” That is the vendor’s characterization, but the distinction is tangible in the desktop tools and installation choices.

In Ars Technica’s 2020 review, Pop!_OS used the standard Ubuntu 20.04 repositories managed by Canonical alongside an additional System76 repository. The reviewer found Ubuntu-oriented technical workloads and instructions generally transferred reliably. That closeness is a practical benefit, not independence from Ubuntu: core packages and much of the compatibility story still depend on its upstream base.

How its desktop workflow differs

Keyboard navigation and launcher

Pop!_Shell added keyboard-focused controls for launching applications, switching windows, and managing the workspace. These features suit people who prefer to keep their hands on the keyboard and use predictable shortcuts instead of repeatedly arranging windows with a mouse. System76’s retrospective describes the design goal as making tiling more accessible.

Automatic tiling and stacking

Automatic tiling can arrange windows into a layout as they open, reducing manual resizing on a busy desktop. Pop!_OS 20.04 also offered window stacking, which groups windows in a tab-like arrangement. These are optional workflow tools, not a requirement to use the desktop. Ars Technica praised the tiling concept but called the optional tiling feature its roughest area; expect to adjust to its behavior rather than assuming it will fit every workspace immediately.

Pop!_Shop and software sources

Ars Technica praised Pop!_Shop, and contemporary coverage noted its Flatpak support. Ubuntu software instructions and packages are often applicable because of the shared base, while Flatpak offers another route for applications. Check each app’s source and update method rather than assuming that every Ubuntu instruction or package behaves identically in Pop!_OS.

Installation, encryption, and recovery

System76 documentation describes an installer with encryption, recovery-partition options, customized keyboard shortcuts, and power profiles. System76 says encryption is enabled by default in its installer. These are vendor-described features, not an independent audit of how a particular installation was configured; verify the options presented during installation and retain recovery information if you enable encryption.

System76 also provides separate Intel/AMD and NVIDIA installation images. A bootable USB drive can be used as installation or recovery media, but it is not a special requirement to buy a particular model or capacity. Details in current System76 support pages can apply to newer Pop!_OS releases, so do not assume every current installer screen or option was unchanged in 20.04.

Graphics and NVIDIA support

The NVIDIA image includes NVIDIA’s proprietary driver, which can simplify initial setup on compatible systems. System76 documents integrated, NVIDIA, hybrid, and compute graphics modes managed through system76-power. Its current graphics-switching instructions say selecting a mode from the GNOME menu prompts for a reboot. Because that instruction is from documentation updated August 14, 2026, it describes current support guidance and does not prove that every detail worked the same way in 20.04.

Hybrid graphics behavior depends on the GPU and laptop configuration. The available modes are useful controls, not a guarantee that every Optimus-style laptop will behave identically or that a particular application will use the intended GPU without configuration.

Does Pop!_OS 20.04 outperform Ubuntu?

There is no basis for calling it universally faster. Phoronix compared freshly installed Pop!_OS 20.04 and Ubuntu 20.04 on a System76 Thelio Major equipped with an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X, 128 GB of RAM, a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500 GB NVMe SSD, and a Radeon RX 5700 XT. The May 9, 2020 comparison covered 269 benchmarks. Both systems used GNOME 3.36.1, X.Org Server 1.20.8, Mesa 20.04, and GCC 9.3; Pop!_OS used a modified Linux 5.4-based kernel.

That benchmark count describes the scope of the test, not a performance result. The comparison reflects those workloads and that high-end desktop configuration; it cannot establish a speed winner for other hardware, laptops, graphics setups, or everyday tasks. For most readers, the more useful distinction is the workflow, driver setup, and desktop defaults they prefer.

Pop!_OS 20.04 versus Ubuntu 20.04: which fits you?

Decision point Pop!_OS 20.04 Ubuntu 20.04
Desktop workflow System76 customizations included keyboard-oriented controls, optional automatic tiling, and stacking. Ubuntu desktop defaults; the reviewed sources do not establish the same System76 workflow tools as built-in defaults.
Graphics setup System76 provided a NVIDIA-driver image and documented graphics modes; actual behavior depended on hardware. Ubuntu’s release announcement does not establish equivalent Pop!_OS graphics controls.
Software compatibility Ubuntu repositories plus a System76 repository; Ubuntu-oriented guidance often transferred reliably according to Ars Technica’s 2020 review. Canonical-managed Ubuntu repositories and the Ubuntu desktop environment.
Installer and recovery System76 documentation describes encryption, recovery-partition choices, and other installer options; verify version-specific availability. Ubuntu’s 20.04 release notice does not state equivalent Pop!_OS-specific choices.
Maintenance Current support status for Pop!_OS 20.04 is not established here; verify before relying on it. Ubuntu announced five years of maintenance updates for Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core from its April 2020 release, with optional ESM.

Pick Pop!_OS when its keyboard-led workflow, tiling, or NVIDIA-oriented setup solves a real need and you are comfortable with System76’s customizations. Ubuntu is the more direct choice if you prefer its standard desktop defaults. Both choices require attention to the age and maintenance status of the particular release you install.

Is Pop!_OS 20.04 still a good choice?

Ubuntu’s April 23, 2020 announcement set a five-year standard maintenance period for Ubuntu Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core, reaching April 2025, with optional ESM. That Ubuntu announcement does not establish the current maintenance status of Pop!_OS 20.04 or whether an individual installation receives extended support. Since 20.04 is a historical release, verify current maintenance and package availability with System76 before using it as a new, internet-connected installation. The 20.04 review is most useful for understanding the design and trade-offs of that release, rather than as a recommendation to install it today.
