There is no evidence yet that Browt, Pombon, or Gecqua is mechanically stronger or better for a particular playstyle in Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves. Choose the type and character concept you like most: Browt is Grass, Pombon is Fire, and Gecqua is Water. Official materials have not established their evolutions, movesets, stats, or battle roles.
Which starter should you choose?
For now, choose by preference, not by a promised strategic advantage. The official announcement confirms each first partner’s type, ability, and character description, but does not provide enough comparative battle information to name a winner or match one to a particular playstyle.
If type is your main consideration, pick the one you most enjoy using: Grass, Fire, or Water. If you are choosing by personality or design, use the official descriptions below as flavor—not as evidence of how a Pokémon will perform in battle.

Compare Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua
| Starter | Type and ability | Official concept | Preference-led fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browt | Grass; Overgrow | Bean Chick Pokémon. It runs energetically while photosynthesizing with the leaves on its brow; it is lively and a bit clumsy. | Choose Browt if you like Grass types and a lively, plant-themed bird. |
| Pombon | Fire; Blaze | Puppy Pokémon. A heat-generating organ in its lungs makes the area below its throat glow faintly; it is guileless and friendly. | Choose Pombon if you like Fire types and a friendly puppy-like design. |
| Gecqua | Water; Torrent | Water Gecko Pokémon. It launches springy water balls from its tail; it is intelligent and shrewd, while putting on airs. | Choose Gecqua if you like Water types and a clever, confident gecko concept. |
These names, types, abilities, and descriptions are published on the official Pokémon Winds and Waves page. Its listed measurements—Browt at 0.3 m and 3.5 kg, Pombon at 0.4 m and 6.7 kg, and Gecqua at 0.3 m and 4.3 kg—describe the characters; they do not establish a gameplay advantage.

How to choose based on what you enjoy
- Pick the type you like using. The confirmed options are Grass, Fire, and Water. The announcement does not publish a matchup chart for these games, so type alone cannot establish which starter will be best overall.
- Choose the design or personality that appeals to you. Browt is lively and clumsy, Pombon friendly and guileless, and Gecqua shrewd and self-assured. Treat those details as character flavor, not predictions about evolution or battle role.
- If strategy matters most, wait for more official mechanics. Evolutions, moves, stats, and battle-system details are not established in the announcement sources. Without them, claims about difficulty, strength, or suitability for a specific strategy would be speculation.
What is confirmed about Winds and Waves?
Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are planned as Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives, with a simultaneous worldwide release in 2027, according to The Pokémon Company’s announcement dated February 27, 2026. The official game page describes an open world of windswept islands and a vast ocean, with Pokémon living in distinct ecosystems shaped by the lush environment and obstacles that include forces of nature. Those setting details do not show whether any starter will have an exploration or battle advantage.
The games are in development. The official page cautions: “Screenshots and footage are from a product in development and not final. Actual gameplay experience may vary.”
