Poka is an open-source, self-hosted workspace for running a personal AI agent. Its creator designed it to keep conversations, credentials and execution on hardware you control, and to pause for your approval before any higher-risk action such as a shell command or a file change. The project’s own repository labels it “Active development / prototype,” so treat it as a design you can inspect and test, not a finished product whose security has been independently verified.

What Poka is

Poka is a personal AI agent workspace. It combines a chat interface, tool use, approval workflows, app connectors and optional computer automation in one application you run yourself. The creator describes it as local-first: the goal is more control over conversation data, provider credentials and what the agent is allowed to execute. The creator’s DEV Community article, dated October 1, 2026, frames the project as a personal motivation rather than a commercial launch: “That is why I created Poka.”

How the project is built

The repository lists the following components:

  • Client: Next.js 15 with React 19.
  • Backend: FastAPI.
  • Storage: SQLite.
  • Optional runtime: Docker with Playwright, used for the browser-based computer-use path.

Because the stack is a standard web client plus a Python API, you can run it as a local web app, as a desktop app through the Electron wrapper the README documents, or as a headless server deployment.

How Poka asks before it acts

The most important design choice is the action gate. According to the README, Poka uses a deny-by-default gateway: an operation runs only if its category is allowed, and anything outside the low-risk set waits for the owner. The split works like this:

Operation type Documented behavior
Workspace reads and web searches May run without a prompt; actions are logged
Shell commands Paused until the owner approves
File modifications Paused until the owner approves
Computer input (mouse, keyboard) Paused until the owner approves

This is a documented design, not a security assessment. The README does not publish the exact classification rules or test cases behind the gate, so before giving an agent access to a machine with sensitive files, check how each category is handled in your own test environment, using a non-critical project directory.

Where your data and credentials live

The project states that conversations, personas, artifacts and logs are stored in a local SQLite database. Provider credentials are described as encrypted at rest, and the web interface uses server-enforced HttpOnly session cookies, which means scripts running in the browser cannot read the session token. These are project claims. No independent security audit of Poka was found in the sources reviewed for this article, so the encryption scheme and session handling are unverified by anyone other than the author.

Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Glacier White
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Which models Poka can use

Poka is built around model choice. The README documents two groups of options.

Category Options named in the documentation Status of the claim
Cloud providers Provider endpoints using your own API key Documented; providers are configured per installation
Local inference Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM Documented; no interoperability test report found
Request protocols Chat Completions, Responses, and prediction protocols Documented; no independent compatibility testing found

In practice, a local setup means running one of the listed model servers on your machine or network and pointing Poka at it. Hardware requirements for local models are not specified by the project, so the size of model you can run depends on your own equipment and the model you choose.

  • Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
  • Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Connectors, search and computer use

  • App connectors: The README names Composio as the connector layer.
  • Web search: A You.com MCP adapter is named for search.
  • Browser runtime: The optional Docker/Playwright runtime is described with a read-only root filesystem and dropped Linux capabilities, which limit what a compromised browser session could change on the host.
  • Desktop agent: A Windows desktop agent is described, and the README lists desktop packages for macOS and Windows.

The project does not publish performance figures for these paths, and it does not claim a particular frame rate or latency for computer use.

What you need to run it

The repository lists these requirements for the web and server setup:

What is and is not established

The materials available to this article describe what Poka is designed to do. They do not show that it works as described under real workloads. Specifically, the sources establish:

Sonos Era 100 - Black - Wireless, Alexa Enabled Smart Speaker
  • Powered by a 47% faster processor, the next-gen dual-tweeter acoustic architecture produces detailed stereo separation while a 25% larger midwoofer deepens the bass.¹
  • Place this speaker anywhere and everywhere you want to listen. The compact design fits beautifully on your bookshelf, kitchen counter, desk, or nightstand.
  • Stream from all your favorite services over WiFi. Pair a Bluetooth device with the press of a button. Connect a turntable or other audio source using an auxiliary cable and the Sonos Line-In Adapter.²
  • Go from unboxing to unbelievable sound in just a few minutes. Simply plug in the power cable, connect your phone or tablet to WiFi, and open the Sonos app.
  • With a tap in the Sonos app, Trueplay tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the speaker’s EQ. So all your content sounds just the way it should.
  • The project’s stated architecture, feature set and setup requirements.
  • That the repository is MIT-licensed.
  • That the repository labels the project as active development.

They do not establish independent security review, independent compatibility testing, user adoption figures or a hardware baseline. No named statistics about user outcomes were published alongside the project.

Who should look at Poka now

Poka suits developers and technically confident users who want a self-hosted agent, can read the source, and are comfortable with prototype software. It is a poor fit for anyone who needs a supported product, a vendor-backed security guarantee, or an agent that runs unattended on sensitive systems. If you evaluate it, start with the approval gate: confirm which operations pause, what gets logged, and where credentials are stored on your machine before connecting real accounts.

Comparing Poka with other agent workspaces is most useful on five points: where conversation and execution data are stored, which cloud and local model options are supported, which operations require approval, which connectors and computer-use paths exist, and how much setup each one needs.
