The PNY CS2342 is a compact M.2 2230 NVMe SSD available in 1TB and 2TB capacities. PNY rates it for up to 7,300 MB/s sequential reads and 6,000 MB/s sequential writes over PCIe Gen4 x4, while noting that real results vary by host device, settings, operating system and workload. Its 22 × 30 × 4 mm format targets compatible handhelds, laptops and compact desktops, including PNY’s examples of Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally and MSI Claw systems.

These figures come from PNY’s product materials, including the official CS2342 product page and the November 10, 2025 sell sheet. Usable formatted capacity will be lower than the advertised 1TB or 2TB.
Is the PNY CS2342 compatible with a Steam Deck or other handheld?
It can be suitable when the handheld accepts an M.2 2230 NVMe drive and supports the required PCIe interface and capacity. PNY specifically names Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally and MSI Claw among compatible-device examples, but that wording is not a guarantee for every model revision.
Check these requirements before opening the device
- Module size: the replacement slot must accept the 22 × 30 mm M.2 2230 format, not a longer 2242 or 2280 module.
- Protocol and bus: the host must support NVMe over PCIe; Gen4 x4 capability is required to target the advertised interface.
- Capacity limits: verify the device maker’s supported capacities and installation instructions, especially for handheld models.
- Physical constraints: confirm clearance, retention hardware, shielding and any thermal pad arrangement before installation.
- Software recovery: plan how you will reinstall or clone the operating system after the swap.
For a model-specific decision, consult the device manufacturer’s service documentation in addition to PNY’s compatibility examples. A Gen4 x4 SSD may operate below its maximum in a host with fewer PCIe lanes, lower power limits or different firmware.

How fast is the CS2342 in practice?
PNY’s maximum ratings are up to 7,300 MB/s sequential read and 6,000 MB/s sequential write. The company states that actual rates depend on the host device, configuration, operating system, settings and applications. These are sequential figures, so they should not be treated as a promise for game-load times, random I/O or every handheld workload.
No independent benchmark for this exact model is established in the available sources. Treat the numbers as manufacturer specifications, and compare independent tests only when they use the same host, firmware, capacity and workload. In a handheld, thermal and power behavior can further separate measured performance from a desktop benchmark.

- Broad Compatibility: Works with Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Microsoft Surface, and select Dell laptops for easy portable upgrades
- PCIe 4.0 Performance: Delivers up to 7,100MB/s read and 6,000MB/s write speeds for quicker game load times, bootups, and smooth multitasking
- Spacious NVMe SSD: This 1TB SSD provides space for AAA games, apps, and media with compact M.2 2230 NVMe SSD form factor for casual gamers and home users
- Power-efficient Design: Engineered for low power draw to extend battery life on handheld consoles and laptops
- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
Choosing between the 1TB and 2TB versions
| Version | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 1TB | Users replacing a smaller drive while keeping a moderate game and application library | Actual free space after formatting, the size of the existing installation and future expansion needs |
| 2TB | Users who keep several large games, media files or virtual machines locally | Whether the host supports this capacity and whether the price per usable terabyte justifies the extra space |
Both capacities use the same 2230 form factor and PCIe Gen4 x4 interface. PNY lists the 1TB part as M230CS2342-1TB-TB and the 2TB part as M230CS2342-2TB-TB.
Thermals, endurance and warranty
Temperature range
PNY specifies an operating range of 0°C–70°C and a storage range of −40°C–85°C. Those limits describe the drive specification; they do not guarantee that a particular handheld enclosure will maintain peak speed without thermal management.

- Capacity: 256GB / Interface: M.2 2230 PCIe NVME SSD
- Dimension: 22mm x 30mm x 2.38mm / Key Type: M Key
- Size: Fits 2230 as is / Compatibility: Laptop & Desktop Compatible
- Bulk Packaging - Only the Drive is included. Any screws, cables, or adapter needed are sold separately
- Warranty: 1-Year Oemgenuine Warranty
MTBF and TBW
The sell sheet lists 1,500,000 hours MTBF. MTBF is a statistical manufacturer reliability metric, not a prediction that one drive will run for that many hours. The reviewed product material states “5-Year Limited Warranty or TBW,” but the extracted information does not state the TBW threshold. Check the warranty terms for your region to determine the applicable time and endurance limits.
What is included in the launch information?
PNY’s March 18, 2025 announcement said the drives would be available in late March 2025 through PNY and Amazon and referred to suggested retail prices. That dated announcement does not establish current stock, pricing or availability. Current retailer terms should be checked separately.

How to compare the CS2342 with another 2230 SSD
- Confirm compatibility first: match the exact 2230 dimensions, NVMe protocol, PCIe generation and the device’s capacity limit.
- Compare usable capacity: account for formatting overhead and the amount of storage your workload actually needs.
- Separate ratings from tests: place PNY’s sequential maximums beside independent measurements made on the same host and workload, if available.
- Read the endurance terms: compare the complete regional limited-warranty language and TBW values rather than assuming every “five-year” warranty is identical.
- Check current value: prices and availability change, so calculate cost per usable terabyte at the time you buy.
Bottom line for compact-device upgrades
The CS2342 is a high-spec 2230 NVMe option for a compatible handheld, laptop or compact desktop, with 1TB and 2TB choices and PNY-rated Gen4 x4 sequential speeds of up to 7,300/6,000 MB/s. Its suitability depends first on the host’s exact slot, interface, capacity support and thermal constraints. Verify those details and the region-specific warranty before purchasing; the headline speeds are not independent benchmark results or guaranteed handheld performance.
