As of a T3 report published 2 October 2026, plug-in solar kits were listed by 13 retailers: Argos, Very, Wilko, Homebase, PlumbNation, City Plumbing, Crampton & Moore, Electricals Online, Electrical2Go, Green2Go, Plug In Solar, SolarKits and UKSOL direct. That is a dated list, not confirmation that every kit is still in stock or compliant. Before buying, check the exact model code against the Energy Networks Association’s Type Test Register and confirm current stock and total delivered price with the seller.
Where to buy plug-in solar panels in the UK
The following retailers were named in T3’s report of 2 October 2026. Its descriptions reflect that article’s snapshot and are not a live stock check.

An independent retailer survey last checked on 22 September 2026 found listings at Argos, City Plumbing and Screwfix, bundles from Octopus Energy, and reported Amazon UK and Very listings. Its timing and scope differ from T3’s, so the two lists should not be treated as a definitive inventory. Amazon was among retailers committed to stocking kits in the government’s announcement, but that does not confirm that a particular compliant model is available there today. Check each seller’s current listing and delivery details.

Are plug-in solar panels legal in the UK?
Compliant plug-in solar systems became legal to buy and use in Great Britain on 27 August 2026, under the relevant amended rules. The change does not currently cover Northern Ireland, according to Energy Saving Trust guidance. The government’s interim specification sets minimum technical and safety requirements for kits; it does not extend those requirements to plug-in batteries.

Energy Saving Trust says one device per home is currently permitted. A device may contain multiple panels, but the allowance is not permission to connect multiple separate kits. Users must register before use. Check the current rules and registration requirements with the official sources before installation.
How to check a kit before buying
- Get the full make and model code. Ask the retailer for the exact code, not just a product family name or a claim that it is “UK ready.” Marketplace listings can abbreviate model names.
- Match the code to the ENA register. Search the Energy Networks Association’s Type Test Register and confirm that the exact model appears. If the listing and register do not match, ask the seller to resolve the discrepancy before paying.
- Check what is included and where it can be mounted. Confirm panel count, microinverter, cables and brackets, then ensure the supplied mount suits your intended location. Energy Saving Trust says typical kits include panels, a microinverter, mounting brackets and cables, but the exact package varies.
- Compare the electrical output and full cost. Check the kit’s AC output limit, total delivered price, delivery terms and present stock—not wattage alone.
- Get permission and check local requirements. Renters and flat owners should obtain permission from the landlord, freeholder or building owner. Planning permission or listed-building consent may also be required.
Will a plug-in kit suit your home?
A typical system’s panels generate DC electricity, which a microinverter converts to AC for the home circuit through the supplied plug. While the kit is producing, it offsets electricity being used in the home; the grid supplies any shortfall, and surplus may be exported. These kits are modest generators, not whole-home backup systems: Energy Saving Trust says they switch off during a power cut.

The kit needs secure mounting in an appropriate location. Energy Saving Trust says current kits are generally better suited to gardens than balconies. A balcony installation needs a suitable frame, fixings or anchors, as well as the relevant owner or building permission. Where practical, a south-facing position gives the strongest generation; east- or west-facing panels can work but produce at different times. Its guidance does not recommend north-facing locations.

How much electricity and bill saving can you expect?
Energy Saving Trust estimates that an 800 W system could generate around 700 kWh a year under its stated assumptions. Its estimated annual bill saving is £100 for a household that is home all day and £70 for occupants who are out during the day. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero gave a higher maximum estimate of £110 a year and up to 20% of average household electricity use. These are estimates, not promised savings: output and value depend on the system, location and how much electricity the household uses while the panels are generating.
Energy Saving Trust’s 2026 guidance puts typical starting cost at around £450, including panels, microinverter, mounting brackets and cables. That is a guide figure, not a price comparison for the retailers above; compare the exact kit, included equipment, delivery and current price before buying.

What the retailer list does—and does not—tell you
The 13 sellers in T3’s October report make it easier to find listings, but retailer presence alone is not a compliance certificate or a guarantee of stock. The article did not provide a same-day stock audit or comparative performance tests of every listed kit. An exact model-register match, appropriate mounting, permission and current seller details are more useful checks than a familiar retailer name or a headline panel wattage.
