Choose PlayStation Portal if you already have a PS5 and want to stream compatible PlayStation games to a dedicated handheld over Wi-Fi. Choose Steam Deck if you want a portable PC that runs compatible Steam games locally. The deciding question is which games you want to play—and whether you want to stream from a console or carry a PC-style gaming device.
What is the main difference between PlayStation Portal and Steam Deck?
PlayStation Portal is a screen and controller for streaming compatible games from a PS5. It is not a standalone gaming PC. Steam Deck is a portable PC running SteamOS, designed to play compatible Steam games on the device itself. That distinction affects what you can play, whether a PS5 is required, and how much your session depends on a network connection.
| Feature | PlayStation Portal | Steam Deck |
|---|---|---|
| How it plays games | Streams compatible games installed on a PS5; eligible cloud streaming is also available as a separate option. | Runs compatible Steam games locally as a portable PC. |
| What you need | A PS5 and broadband Wi-Fi for Remote Play. Cloud streaming requires PlayStation Plus Premium and is subject to eligibility limits. | A Steam Deck and games that are compatible with it. Internet is needed for downloads and online features, but local play does not inherently require a live stream. |
| Display | 8-inch LCD, 1080p, gameplay up to 60 fps. | OLED: 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 1280×800, up to 90 Hz. LCD: 7-inch LCD, 1280×800, 60 Hz. |
| Storage and connections | 3.5mm wired audio and PlayStation Link wireless audio. | microSD expansion and USB-C with DisplayPort output and peripheral support. |
These are different kinds of handheld, not two versions of the same idea. Portal extends a PlayStation setup; Deck brings compatible PC games with you.
Which device fits your game library?
Choose Portal for compatible PS5 and PS4 games
Portal streams compatible games installed on a PS5, including supported PS4 titles. It is designed for players who want to continue using their PlayStation library on a handheld screen, with supported DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers. Sony says Portal is not compatible with PS4 consoles, so a PS5 is required for Remote Play.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Sony also offers cloud streaming for selected PS5 games on Portal with PlayStation Plus Premium. This is separate from Remote Play and does not make the full PlayStation catalog available: game eligibility, account restrictions, and country availability apply and can change. Check Sony’s PlayStation Portal product information for current requirements and availability.
Choose Steam Deck for compatible Steam games
Deck is for people who want to take compatible Steam games with them and value a portable PC-style layout. Its controls include trackpads and assignable grip buttons, alongside full-size controls. Compatibility varies by game, so check the titles you care about rather than assuming every PC game will work equally well.

Portal depends on a PS5 for Remote Play
For Remote Play, Sony requires a PS5 connected to broadband and paired with Portal. Sony says a broadband connection of at least 5 Mbps is required and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience; actual performance varies with network conditions. Those figures are Sony’s guidance, not a guarantee of a particular image quality or latency. See Sony’s Portal Remote Play guidance and PS Remote Play guidance.

Cloud streaming is an additional, eligibility-limited option, not a reason to treat Portal as a standalone console. Sony’s free Remote Play app can stream PS4 and PS5 games to compatible phones, tablets, computers, and other devices, but using that app does not remove Portal’s PS5 requirement.
Deck can play locally without a live stream
Steam Deck is built to run compatible Steam games on the device. You need internet to download games and use online functions, but local play does not inherently depend on streaming a game from a console. Individual games may have their own online requirements, so check the games you plan to play.

How do their screens, batteries, and connections compare?
Screen size and refresh rate
Portal has an 8-inch, 1080p LCD with gameplay up to 60 fps. Steam Deck OLED has a 7.4-inch HDR OLED at 1280×800 and supports up to 90 Hz; the LCD Deck has a 7-inch, 1280×800 screen at 60 Hz. The listed frame-rate and refresh-rate figures describe different specifications, so they should not be treated as a direct promise that one device will display every game at a particular rate.
Battery estimates are not a head-to-head test
Valve estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay for the OLED Deck, with a 50 Wh battery, and 2–8 hours for the LCD Deck, with a 40 Wh battery. Valve says runtime depends on content. Sony’s cited Portal product information does not give a directly comparable runtime figure, so there is no basis here for declaring a battery-life winner.

Expansion, audio, and external displays

Which should you choose?
Portal is the better fit if…
- You already own a PS5 and want a dedicated handheld screen for compatible games in your PlayStation library.
- You have dependable Wi-Fi where you expect to play and are comfortable with Remote Play’s network dependence.
- You value supported DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers in a handheld setup.
Steam Deck is the better fit if…
- You want a portable PC gaming experience for compatible Steam games.
- You want to play locally without relying on a live stream from a PS5.
- You value PC-style controls, microSD storage expansion, or USB-C display connectivity.
Neither is a universal substitute for the other. Portal makes the most sense as an extension of a PS5 setup; Deck makes the most sense when its portable-PC approach and supported game library match what you want to play.
