Choose PlayStation Portal if you want a dedicated PS5 remote-play device with controls built in. Choose a phone and controller if you already own compatible gear, want to connect to a PS4 as well as a PS5, or may use mobile data. Both setups stream games over a network, and neither has a proven universal advantage in latency or image quality.
How the two Remote Play setups work
PlayStation Portal
Portal streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5 over Wi-Fi. It is a dedicated remote player with console-style controls, not a standalone console. Your PS5 needs a broadband connection and must be powered on or in Rest Mode. PlayStation’s Portal overview explains the device and its requirements.

Phone and controller
The PS Remote Play app connects a compatible phone or other device to a PS4 or PS5. On a phone, you can use supported controllers or on-screen controls. PlayStation lists Android phones and tablets, plus iPhone and iPad, among supported mobile devices. You need a PlayStation account, a compatible console and a high-speed connection. Portal vs. phone: the practical differences

Which setup fits your situation?
Pick Portal for a focused PS5 handheld setup
- You play from a PS5 and want a separate device with integrated controls.
- You would rather not attach a controller to your phone or rely on touchscreen controls.
- You want a dedicated screen for Remote Play rather than using your phone while playing.
Pick a phone and controller to use gear you have
- You already own a compatible phone and controller and want to avoid buying a dedicated remote player.
- You need Remote Play access to a PS4 as well as a PS5.
- You want the option to connect over mobile data when Wi-Fi is unavailable, while keeping your carrier’s data allowance in mind.
Phone accessories are not universally interchangeable: check the phone model, operating-system version and controller’s compatibility details before relying on a specific combination.
What internet speed do you need?
PlayStation lists a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps for both Portal and Remote Play, and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are PlayStation’s published recommendations; the reviewed official pages do not state when the figures were published. They are not guarantees of smooth play: Sony notes that network conditions affect quality. See the official Portal connection guidance and Remote Play requirements.

Phone Remote Play can use mobile data, but streaming may consume a significant amount. Check your plan’s allowance and possible carrier charges before playing away from Wi-Fi. A speed figure alone does not diagnose a connection problem; do not assume new networking equipment will fix it without first identifying the source of the problem.
Check game and controller compatibility first
Games
Neither setup supports every game. Portal cannot Remote Play games that require PS VR or PS VR2, certain additional peripherals, or PS Plus Premium streaming on PS5. Remote Play also excludes VR-dependent games and certain games requiring additional peripherals. Portal’s haptics and adaptive triggers work only in games that support them. Check PlayStation’s Portal compatibility guidance and Remote Play information for the game and console you plan to use.

Controllers and phones
PlayStation’s platform information lists DualSense support for iPhone and iPad running iOS 14.5 or later, Android phones and tablets running Android 12 or later, Mac 11.3 or later via Bluetooth, and Windows via USB. DUALSHOCK 4 support is listed for a broader range of supported platforms. PlayStation also lists Backbone One-PlayStation Edition compatibility for phones running iOS 15 or later and Android 10 or later. These operating-system thresholds are a starting point, not a guarantee for every handset or regional accessory edition; verify the current Sony and accessory compatibility details before buying or setting up.
For a phone, start with the current Remote Play platform and controller information, then check the phone maker’s specifications and the controller maker’s compatibility list for your exact model.
