Connect a PlayStation controller to a console with the right USB cable: DualSense for PS5 uses USB Type-C, while DUALSHOCK 4 for PS4 uses its included USB cable. Both can charge in rest mode once USB power is enabled in the console settings. Charging docks are optional and differ by controller generation.
Charge a DualSense controller on PS5
- Connect the DualSense to a PS5 USB Type-C port using its included cable or another cable that complies with USB standards. It can charge while the console is on or in rest mode. Sony’s DualSense support page and its PS5 USB port guide provide further details.
- To charge in rest mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports. Choose Always or 3 Hours. On CFI-2000 model group consoles, Adaptive is also available; Sony says it adjusts charging time based on remaining battery to save power. See PlayStation’s console charging instructions.
- To check the battery, open Accessories in the control center. The battery icon animates while the controller charges. In rest mode, the light bar slowly blinks orange and turns off when charging is complete.
You can also connect a DualSense to a computer or another USB device using a USB-compliant cable. Some chargers and USB devices may not charge it, so try another supported source if the battery indicator does not animate. Sony does not give a general cable-charging time estimate.
Charge a DUALSHOCK 4 controller on PS4
- Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 to the PS4 with its included USB cable. It can charge while the console is on or in rest mode. Sony estimates about two hours to charge a controller with no remaining battery. See Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 support page.
- To charge in rest mode, open Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports. If you select 3 Hours, the PS4 stops supplying USB power after three hours.
- Press and hold the PS button to check the battery level in the Quick Menu. The battery icon blinks while charging. In rest mode, the light bar slowly blinks orange and turns off when charging finishes.
If a DUALSHOCK 4 does not charge properly, try another USB cable or supported USB source. Sony also recommends resetting the controller using the instructions on its support page.

Choose a cable or charging dock
A cable is the basic charging method; a dock is optional. Match any accessory to the controller generation rather than choosing by the general label “PlayStation controller charger.”

For a desk dock, check whether it charges one or two controllers and confirm that it is designed for your controller model. If replacing a missing or damaged cable, check both connector ends and compatibility with the power source. PlayStation’s accessories page lists charging accessory categories, but stock and regional availability can change.

If the controller will not charge
- Check the connection: Make sure the cable is firmly connected at both ends and matches the controller’s port.
- Try a different cable or USB source: For DualSense, use a USB-compliant cable; Sony cautions that some USB devices and chargers cannot charge it.
- Check rest-mode power settings: Confirm that Supply Power to USB Ports is enabled. A three-hour limit may have elapsed.
- Reset a DUALSHOCK 4 if needed: Follow Sony’s controller reset instructions if it still does not charge properly.
