A proposed class action accused Sony of concealing a PlayStation 5 problem that allegedly caused games to crash and consoles to power down during play. The Sony case was voluntarily dismissed without prejudice on November 7, 2022; the available status report did not state why. A separate lawsuit against Amazon—not Sony—was dismissed by a court in 2023, which found the complaint did not provide enough detail to plausibly infer a widespread latent defect.
What did the lawsuit accuse Sony of?
The proposed class action, Trejo v. Sony, alleged that PS5 consoles could crash or shut down unexpectedly during gameplay and that Sony knew about the alleged problem but failed to disclose it. Those were allegations in a lawsuit, not findings that the console had a defect or that Sony concealed one. What did the complaint say the PS5 problem looked like?
A separate complaint in Castaneda v. Amazon.com, Inc. described crashes or power-downs while users played games, with the issue alleged to be more prominent—but not limited to—PS5 games designed for the newer console. It said users could lose game progress and might see a warning after restarting about possible data loss, corruption, or damage. The complaint also alleged that some users downgraded to PS4 versions of games as a workaround; the filing does not establish that this works generally or make it technical advice. These details are claims in the complaint, not verified findings: the Castaneda complaint, filed June 17, 2022.

The plaintiff in Trejo v. Sony voluntarily dismissed the proposed class action without prejudice on November 7, 2022. The cited case-status report says the dismissal notice and subsequent court documents did not state the reason. “Without prejudice” means the dismissal itself was not a decision resolving the allegations on their merits; it does not mean a court found the allegations true or false.

Why is there also a court ruling about Amazon?
Castaneda v. Amazon.com, Inc. was a distinct lawsuit focused on Amazon’s product-page representations and alleged failure to disclose a PS5 defect. Amazon was the defendant; Sony was not. The Northern District of Illinois dismissed the claims on June 26, 2023. The opinion is available from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
What the court said about the alleged defect
The court said the complaint did not identify specifically what caused the supposed design defect. It also found that the complaint’s details—including four other consumer examples—were insufficient to support a plausible inference that PS5 consoles generally suffered from a latent design defect. That ruling addressed the allegations and claims against Amazon; it was not a ruling that crashes never happen, nor a decision in the Sony case.

Did a court find that Sony hid a PS5 defect?
No such finding is established by these cases. The Sony lawsuit’s concealment claim remained an allegation when the plaintiff dismissed the case without prejudice. The Amazon ruling concerned a different defendant and found the complaint insufficient to support the claimed console-wide defect; it did not determine whether Sony knew about or hid a defect.
How many PS5 owners were affected?
The cited court opinion and case-status report do not establish a reliable failure rate or the number of affected PS5 owners. The four additional consumer examples mentioned by the court were allegations cited in the Amazon complaint, not a population estimate.
