The anticipated Konami PS5 game described as free on the PlayStation Store is Silent Hill: The Short Message. PlayStation Blog announced its free PS5 release on January 31, 2024, saying players could start that day. The same post also revealed footage from the separate Silent Hill 2 remake, which is not the free game in that announcement.
Which Konami game was free on PS5?
It was Silent Hill: The Short Message, a short-form entry in the Silent Hill series. In its January 31, 2024 announcement, PlayStation Blog said the game was available free on PS5 and linked to its PlayStation Store page.
The date is the announcement and stated release date, not confirmation that the Store listing remains available in every region today. The announcement supports using the PlayStation Store as the route to the game; it does not specify a PlayStation Plus requirement or explain regional exceptions.
Is it the Silent Hill 2 remake?
No. The announcement paired news of The Short Message’s free release with new footage of the Silent Hill 2 remake, but they are distinct games. The free game identified in the post is The Short Message; the remake was not described there as free.

What kind of game is The Short Message?
PlayStation Blog describes it as a short-form Silent Hill title with a young, contemporary protagonist. Silent Hill Series Producer Motoi Okamoto said the project began experimentally, as a way for the team to try different approaches and develop its horror-game expertise; Konami partnered with Hexadrive.
Okamoto also described themes around young people, phones and online communication, isolation, abuse, and bullying. These are the development team’s stated aims and themes, not a promise about how every player will interpret the story. He said the whole game was being released free so newcomers could get a taste of Silent Hill.

Could the headline refer to another free Konami PS5 game?
Konami has other free-to-play games, so the wording alone can be ambiguous. For example, Konami announced eBaseball: PRO SPIRIT for PS5 and Steam on March 5, 2026, and separately describes eFootball as free-to-play. Neither is the Silent Hill game in PlayStation Blog’s January 2024 announcement. The evidence for this story’s likely intended title points to The Short Message.
