Pixel Watch hand gestures let you control supported watch screens without touching the display. On Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Watch 5 running Wear OS 6.1 or later, the documented controls are double pinch—tap your index finger and thumb together twice—and wrist turn—quickly turn your wrist away and back. Both are one-handed gestures, and Google says they are enabled by default. Their effect depends on the notification, alarm, app, or card currently on screen.

Which Pixel Watch models support hand gestures?

Google’s current English hand-gesture documentation limits this feature to Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Watch 5 with Wear OS version 6.1 or later. The requirement applies to the watch software, not merely to the phone app. Google also advises keeping watch apps updated, because gesture behavior and supported contexts can change with software updates.

Watch Documented software requirement
Pixel Watch 3 Wear OS 6.1 or later
Pixel Watch 4 Wear OS 6.1 or later
Pixel Watch 5 Wear OS 6.1 or later

If your watch is an earlier model or is running an older Wear OS release, these instructions are outside Google’s documented compatibility scope. Check for system and app updates before troubleshooting a gesture that does not respond.

What are the two hand gestures?

Double pinch

Hold the watch hand naturally and tap the pad of your index finger against your thumb twice in quick succession. The movement is made with the hand wearing the watch; you do not need to touch the screen. Double pinch is the more action-oriented gesture: it can select, start, stop, scroll, or answer depending on the current view.

Wrist turn

Quickly turn the watch wrist away from you and then back. Wrist turn is primarily a navigation or interruption control. In some contexts it goes back or minimizes a view; in others it dismisses, snoozes, or silences something that is currently demanding attention.

These gestures are context-sensitive. A double pinch that starts a timer in the Timer app will not perform that same action on a watch face, and wrist turn does not provide a universal command in every app.

What does double pinch do on Pixel Watch?

The following actions are the contexts Google lists for double pinch. An action appears only when the relevant screen, app, or event is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Context Double-pinch action
Notifications Scroll through alerting notifications; send the first available Smart Reply.
Alarms and timers Snooze a firing alarm; stop a firing timer; start or stop an ongoing timer or stopwatch.
Camera Take a photo; start or stop video recording in the Camera app.
Media and calls Play or pause media; answer an incoming call.
Watch face and cards Open At a Glance when it appears at the bottom of the watch face; open the notification tray from the watch face; switch Maps views; scroll workout metrics, Morning Brief, workout summary, and Wallet cards; start the most recent workout.

Notifications

When an alerting notification is on screen, double pinch advances through notifications. If the notification offers Smart Reply, the first suggested reply is sent by double pinch. Because the gesture follows the notification state, it is not a general-purpose text-entry shortcut for every message.

Alarms, timers, and stopwatches

A firing alarm can be snoozed. A timer that is actively ringing can be stopped. For an ongoing timer or stopwatch, double pinch toggles the running state, allowing you to start or stop it without reaching for the display.

Camera, media, and calls

In the Camera app, double pinch works as a shutter and as a recording control: it takes a still photo or starts and stops video. During media playback it toggles play and pause. For an incoming call, it answers the call.

At a Glance, Maps, workouts, Morning Brief, and Wallet

On the watch face, double pinch can open At a Glance when that panel is shown at the bottom, or open the notification tray. In Maps it switches views. In workout-related screens it scrolls metrics and workout summaries; it can also scroll Morning Brief and Wallet cards. Google also lists starting the most recent workout as a supported action. These are view-specific commands, so seeing no response on another screen does not mean the gesture is broken.

How do I use wrist turn?

Turn the watch wrist quickly away from you and back. Wrist turn has fewer listed functions than double pinch, but it is useful when you want to clear or back out of a view without touching the screen.

Context Wrist-turn action
Expanded notification Close the expanded notification.
Alarm Snooze or dismiss the alarm.
Incoming call Silence the call.
Navigation Go back universally; minimize At a Glance.

Unlike double pinch, wrist turn does not answer calls, control media, or operate the Camera according to Google’s listed actions. It is also not described as a replacement for every on-screen Back button; the universal-back behavior applies where the gesture is recognized.

Where are the hand-gesture settings?

You can manage Double pinch and Wrist turn either from the companion Pixel Watch phone app or directly on the watch.

  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
  1. On the phone: Open the Pixel Watch app and go to Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures.
  2. On the watch: Open Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures.
  3. Use the controls for Double pinch and Wrist turn to enable or disable each gesture independently.

Google says one-handed gestures are on by default. The watch also provides gesture-hint frequency choices: Always, Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Once. Choose a frequent hint while learning, then reduce it if reminders become distracting.

How can I learn or replay the gesture tutorial?

The watch includes a hand-gesture education area. Google documents two paths:

  1. Open Settings > General > Pixel Tips > Hand gestures.
  2. Alternatively, open Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures > Education > Hand gestures.

After an update, a “What’s new” notification may link to the tutorial. Google also says a “Day 1” tutorial may appear 24 hours after an update. If you dismissed either prompt, use one of the settings paths instead of waiting for another notification.

How do I turn off Pixel Watch hand gestures?

To stop a gesture from triggering actions, open Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures on the watch, or the same path in the Pixel Watch phone app. Turn off Double pinch, Wrist turn, or both. This leaves ordinary touch controls available.

If you only want fewer instructional prompts, change the gesture-hint frequency rather than disabling the gestures. The frequency setting controls hints; the individual toggles control whether the gestures themselves are active.

Hand gestures versus Tilt-to-wake and accessibility gestures

Several Pixel Watch controls also use movement or a wrist action, but they are separate features.

Tilt-to-wake

Tilt-to-wake turns on the display when you tilt the watch toward yourself. Its toggle is under Settings > Gestures. Google says turning Tilt-to-wake off can extend battery life. It wakes the screen; it is not the double-pinch or wrist-turn command set described above.

Other accessibility gestures

Google’s accessibility overview separately lists Tilt-to-wake, Touch-to-wake, Rotate crown to wake, and Screenshot. Availability can vary or change with software updates, so an accessibility gesture should not be assumed to behave like a hand gesture or to be present on every software build.

Touch lock and Bedtime mode

Touch lock disables touch navigation. Bedtime mode disables the watch screen, Tilt-to-wake, and touch. The cited Google documentation does not state that either setting disables double pinch or wrist turn, so do not treat those modes as a documented way to switch off hand gestures. Use the Hand gestures settings when you need explicit control.

What to check when a gesture does not work

  • Confirm eligibility: Verify that the watch is one of the documented models and is running Wear OS 6.1 or later.
  • Update software: Install available watch updates and keep watch apps current, as Google recommends.
  • Check the toggle: In Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures, make sure the specific gesture is enabled. Double pinch and Wrist turn are separate controls.
  • Use the documented motion: Double pinch means two quick index-finger-to-thumb taps; wrist turn means a quick turn away and back. A slow or partial movement may not be recognized.
  • Test the right context: Try a listed screen, such as an active alarm, an incoming call, a notification, or the watch face. Because actions are context-dependent, no response in an unsupported view is expected.
  • Review hints: Set gesture hints to Always or Daily while learning, then replay the tutorial from Pixel Tips or Hand gestures education.

These checks separate configuration and context problems from a feature-availability limit. Google’s documentation does not promise that every gesture works in every app or that every software update preserves the same action list.

Practical ways to use the gestures

When your hands are occupied

Double pinch is useful while exercising, cooking, or carrying something because it can scroll workout data, start the most recent workout, control media, and handle an incoming call without touching the display. Use it only when the watch is already showing the relevant screen or event.

When you need a fast dismissal

Wrist turn is suited to clearing an expanded notification, silencing an incoming call, or snoozing or dismissing an alarm. Its back and minimize functions also reduce the need to find a small on-screen control.

When accidental activation is a concern

Disable only the gesture that causes unwanted actions. For example, leaving Double pinch enabled while turning off Wrist turn preserves hands-free media and notification controls without using the wrist motion. If prompts are the problem rather than activation, adjust hint frequency instead.

What the feature does—and does not—promise

Pixel Watch hand gestures are a documented set of context-sensitive shortcuts, not a universal replacement for touch, the crown, or every app control. Google’s list identifies supported actions for particular notifications, alarms, timers, calls, media, Camera, Maps, workout views, Morning Brief, Wallet, At a Glance, and the watch face. It does not say that developers can assign arbitrary gesture commands, nor that every listed action appears on every screen.

For the clearest results, keep the watch software and apps current, enable only the gestures you want, and practice them through the built-in tutorial. That approach matches the documented controls while leaving ordinary touch navigation available for screens that do not expose a hand-gesture action.
