For the difficult urban routes tested so far, the evidence favors the Google Pixel Watch 5—but it does not prove a universal GPS winner. Google reports that its pre-production Pixel Watch 5 outperformed the Garmin fēnix 8 Pro in an internal urban route-tracking comparison. In a separate, small field test, TechRadar also found the Pixel Watch 5’s track stayed closer to the route on two short runs around London’s Canary Wharf. Neither result establishes which watch is more accurate across different environments, activities, GPS modes, or software versions.

What the head-to-head evidence shows

Evidence Conditions Reported result What it establishes
Google’s internal comparison Pre-production Pixel Watch 5 devices; outdoor running, walking, and biking in challenging urban settings; good network conditions; sessions of three hours or less; July 2026. Google says Pixel Watch 5 outperformed the Garmin fēnix 8 Pro in route-map accuracy. A manufacturer-reported result for those stated conditions, not a universal benchmark. Google’s engineering account describes the comparison and its limitations.
TechRadar field test Reviewer Michael Sawh ran the watches on two short outings around Canary Wharf, including near tall buildings, and swapped wrists between runs. The Pixel Watch 5’s plotted track stayed closest to the actual route in the difficult section. The Garmin track wandered at points, and the Garmin recorded a longer distance on the first run. Pacing fluctuated across all three watches tested. A useful real-world check, but two short runs cannot settle broader accuracy. Read TechRadar’s test.

The results point in the same direction for the tested city routes, but their scope matters. Google’s result is its own study under specified conditions; TechRadar’s independent comparison covers only two outings. Neither is a large, repeated, multi-environment test against a ground-truth reference.

What “more accurate GPS” means

A route can look convincing on a map yet still record the wrong distance, or show a plausible distance while drifting away from the path. To judge GPS performance, separate the measurements that matter:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Route-line deviation: how far the recorded track strays from the path actually taken, especially near tall buildings or under tree cover.
  • Distance error: the difference between the watch’s recorded distance and a measured reference distance.
  • Repeatability: whether the same route produces similar results across repeated outings.
  • Pace stability: whether displayed pace stays steady and credible. In TechRadar’s two runs, pacing fluctuated across all three watches, including the Pixel Watch 5; that does not negate its better-looking route line in the reported difficult section.
  • Operating trade-offs: GPS mode, battery use, network conditions, and any remote processing can affect what a test measures and how a watch performs in practice.

The available comparisons chiefly address route plotting in challenging urban conditions. They do not establish a broad winner for distance error, repeatability, pace accuracy, battery life in a particular GPS mode, or performance in forests and open terrain.

Do the GPS specifications decide it?

No. Google’s specifications list dual-frequency GPS for the Pixel Watch 5, while Garmin’s comparison lists multi-band GPS for the fēnix 8 Pro. Those labels describe positioning capabilities; by themselves, they do not show which watch records the more accurate route.

Satellite-system support also varies by Pixel Watch 5 region. Google’s specifications list GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS for the US version; the rest-of-world version adds BeiDou and QZSS. Garmin’s comparison identifies multi-band GPS for the fēnix 8 Pro. For exact supported systems and model details, consult Google’s Pixel Watch 5 specifications and Garmin’s fēnix 8 Pro comparison. More listed constellations or frequency bands should not be mistaken for proof of better measured accuracy.

How Google says Pixel Watch 5 corrects urban GPS errors

Google describes a system that combines GPS reference-station information with 3D building models to address positioning errors in cities. According to the company, the watch compresses raw GPS data and sends it for processing outside the watch; corrected results return through the Google Health app back end. Google says the approach accounts for atmospheric and satellite discrepancies and uses AI with building data to improve route tracking. These are Google’s descriptions of its engineering and claims, not independently verified measurements of how much each component improves accuracy or how it behaves under every network condition. The company’s explanation is available in its Pixel Watch GPS engineering article.

Which one should you choose for GPS?

Choose Pixel Watch 5 if urban route plotting is your main concern

The strongest available direct evidence favors the Pixel Watch 5 for the tested routes around tall buildings: Google’s internal comparison and TechRadar’s two-run field test both report an advantage in urban route tracking. Treat that as a reason to lean toward it for this specific use, not as proof that it will win on every city route or in every GPS mode.

Choose based on your own use if you need a broader accuracy verdict

If your priority is reliable tracking across repeated runs, different terrain, or varied GPS and network conditions, the current head-to-head evidence does not answer which watch is more accurate overall. For a meaningful comparison, look for repeated trials on the same measured route, compare track deviation and total-distance error separately, and record the GPS mode and network conditions. The two available comparisons do not supply that full picture.
