Is the Pixel Watch 5 worth it? CNET reviewer Vanessa Hand Orellana’s one-week review finds a polished Android smartwatch, but not an easy upgrade for Pixel Watch 4 owners. The main drawbacks are its higher starting price, roughly day-long battery life in her test, and features that were not ready during testing. It makes more sense for first-time buyers or people upgrading from a much older Pixel Watch.

What the one-week review concludes

Orellana describes the Watch 5 as a familiar, refined return to a strong Android smartwatch experience. Wear OS 7 and integration with Android services are positives, but the hardware changes and unfinished features do not make a compelling case for every existing owner. Her assessment is based on a week with the watch, not an independent laboratory evaluation. Read the CNET review by Vanessa Hand Orellana, published August 19, 2026.

Her recommendation depends on what you own now: first-time buyers and people coming from much older models have a clearer reason to consider it than Pixel Watch 4 owners. Orellana summed up the familiarity this way: “The Pixel Watch 5 feels like an old friend making its way back on my wrist.”

Price, sizes and connectivity

The review reports a $400 starting price for the 41mm Wi-Fi model, $50 above the prior generation. It also identifies 41mm and 45mm sizes and Wi-Fi and cellular configurations. Its named premium configuration is a $580 45mm Stephen Curry Special Edition with cellular. These are prices reported in the August 2026 review, not guaranteed current offers; check Google’s current listings for availability and pricing before buying.

#1 Best Overall
Google Pixel Watch 4 (41mm) - Smartwatch - Obsidian Active Band - Wi-Fi
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
  • See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
  • Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
  • Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]

The price increase matters most when comparing the Watch 5 with the Watch 4. Orellana considers the older model a strong competitor and says the added cost is difficult to justify for Watch 4 owners. The review does not provide a controlled, comprehensive comparison with every competing smartwatch, so it cannot establish that the Watch 5 is the best choice across the market.

Battery life and charging in the reviewer’s test

On the 41mm Watch 5, Orellana observed about 24–28 hours of use with the always-on display enabled, sleep tracking overnight, and a 30-minute outdoor GPS run. She fully charged the watch in under 45 minutes. These are observations from her described use, not a guarantee for every wearer; settings and usage can change results.

  • 2yrs of data included with Pixel Watch 4 LTE[23]; Google Fi powers your messaging, navigation, and music on the go; offer only valid on Pixel Watch 4 LTE sold by and shipped from select sales channel
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]

  • Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]

Google’s estimates cited in the review were 30 hours for the 41mm model and 40 hours for the 45mm model. Keep those manufacturer estimates separate from the reviewer’s 41mm result. The review also notes that Battery Saver turns on at 10%, changing display and background behavior. If you rely on overnight sleep tracking, the test suggests you should plan around frequent charging rather than assume multi-day battery life.

What the health and workout tests do—and do not—show

Heart-rate comparisons

Orellana compared Watch 5 readings with a Polar H10 chest strap during two runs: a three-mile run on uneven terrain and a one-mile track run. She reported average differences of 0.96 bpm (0.70%) and 1.65 bpm (1.10%), respectively. In her one-mile Watch 4 comparison, the reported average difference was 8.68 bpm (5.64%). These are small-sample observations from one reviewer, not a general or clinical accuracy finding. She also found the Watch 5 slower to follow rapid heart-rate changes, a meaningful limitation during abrupt effort changes.

Google Pixel Watch 3 (45mm) Latest Model - Matte Black Aluminum Case - Obsidian Band - Wi-Fi (Renewed)
  • The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
  • Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
  • Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
  • Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
  • Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]

Sleep and GPS evidence

The review did not validate sleep tracking in a sleep study, so its observations cannot establish sleep-stage accuracy. Orellana also did not test Google’s strongest GPS comparison claim in the dense-city environment relevant to that claim. The review therefore leaves those questions open rather than proving either feature’s performance in those conditions.

Workout Builder and Coach

Workout Builder was not available on the watch during the review’s test, although Orellana could create a workout through the phone app. She also describes a Coach feature that can use a photo and prompt to build a workout for Google Health Premium subscribers. The review reported that subscription at $10 per month in August 2026; that price and availability should not be treated as a current verified offer.

Design, durability and health features

Orellana likes the circular, all-screen design but flags the exposed glass as a potential scratch risk. She had not scratched her Watch 5 during the one-week test; her concern also draws on prior experience with the Watch 4. That is a durability concern, not evidence that the Watch 5 will scratch under ordinary use or a measured durability result.

The review describes Health Guardian as expanding emergency-related health features, including detection of possible breathing emergencies and persistent low blood oxygen, with emergency-contact behavior if the wearer is unresponsive. It also discusses possible longer-term blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trends. Orellana says those trend features were not intended to diagnose conditions and had not received FDA clearance at the time of publication. Do not rely on them as diagnoses or assume their regulatory status has since changed without checking a current authoritative source.

Wear OS 7 and Android fit

The review identifies Wear OS 7, Live Updates, connected-device controls and integration with Android services as strengths. It also reports Google’s promise of additional Gemini features later in 2026. That is a future-feature promise as reported in the August review, not confirmation that the features are available now.

The Watch 5’s appeal is consequently tied to ecosystem fit as well as hardware: consider whether your phone is compatible and whether you will use the Android integrations. The review supports it as an option for buyers entering the Pixel Watch line or replacing a much older watch, but does not establish that its software additions alone warrant replacing a Watch 4.

Who should consider the Pixel Watch 5?

  • First-time Pixel Watch buyers: The review’s positive assessment of the design and Android integration makes the Watch 5 a plausible starting point, provided the price and charging routine suit you.
  • Owners of much older Pixel Watch models: The reviewer sees a clearer upgrade case here than for Watch 4 owners, though the review does not quantify improvements against each older generation.
  • Pixel Watch 4 owners: The $50 reported price increase and the Watch 4’s continued competitiveness make waiting or keeping the current watch easier to justify.
  • People prioritizing long battery life or finished launch features: The one-week test’s battery result and the unavailable Workout Builder are reasons to verify current feature availability and consider whether the trade-offs fit your routine.
