What happened to Mason Heintschel?
Heintschel was hurt during a scramble near the sideline in the third quarter of Pitt’s game against Virginia Tech on October 2. CBS Pittsburgh reported that 13:04 remained in the quarter when the play occurred. He appeared to grab his knee after the tackle, and Pitt staff helped him into the injury tent. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette later reported that he went to the locker room.
Those accounts describe what appeared to happen on the field; they do not establish which body part or structure was injured. Holden Geriner replaced Heintschel at quarterback.
Is Heintschel undergoing an MRI?

Earlier in the season, Pitt Athletics reported that he threw seven touchdown passes in a September 5, 2026 win over Miami (Ohio), tying Pitt’s school record; that earlier performance does not indicate the status of his current injury.
