The failure in this case comes from reading the wire format incorrectly, not from Piper’s audio itself. A Wyoming event is a newline-terminated JSON header that may be followed by an optional data block and an optional binary payload. The lengths in the header tell the receiver exactly how many bytes each block occupies. A client that reads the header and then treats the next bytes as audio will consume the metadata block as if it were audio or JSON, and every event after that is misread. The empty voice value is a separate problem. Whether it causes an error or silently falls back to a default depends on the server backend, so it has to be checked rather than assumed.
What a Wyoming event looks like on the wire
Wyoming is a framed event stream. Each event has three possible parts, in this order:
- Header: one line of UTF-8 JSON terminated by a newline. It contains the event type and, where applicable,
data_lengthandpayload_length. - Data block: present only when
data_lengthis set and nonzero. It is a separate block of bytes, often JSON, that describes the event. It is not the audio. - Payload: present only when
payload_lengthis set and nonzero. For text-to-speech, this is the raw audio bytes for an audio chunk.
The two lengths describe consecutive regions of the stream. Neither one is a hint, so consume them in order and in full. A header with no lengths is a complete event by itself, and the next byte after its newline begins the next header.

Reading frames in the correct order
The reader needs a loop that reads each event’s bytes in a fixed sequence. Most of the damage in a hand-written reader comes from skipping one of these steps or reading past a block boundary.

- Read bytes up to and including the first newline. Decode them as UTF-8 and parse the JSON header to get the event type and lengths.
- If
data_lengthis present and nonzero, read exactly that many bytes and parse them as the event’s data block. If your protocol library already merges this block into the event’s data, use the library’s documented merge behavior rather than handling the bytes a second time. - If
payload_lengthis present and nonzero, read exactly that many bytes as the binary payload. Do not split this region on newlines. Audio bytes can contain any byte value, including 0x0A. - Dispatch the event, then return to step 1 at the next byte.
For speech output, the event sequence is audio-start, then one or more audio-chunk events, then audio-stop. Chunk events carry the format fields (rate, width, and channels) that your downstream code needs to interpret the payload.
What the reported error tells you
The original account reports the client error Extra data: line 1 column 62. The author explains that the parser began reading inside the separate metadata block after the audio-start event. The error text is the kind Python’s json module raises when a string holds valid JSON followed by more characters, which fits a parser that was handed the header and the metadata block as one string. That is an interpretation of the message, not a confirmed trace of that particular program, so check your own parser’s buffer boundaries directly.

Two symptoms follow from skipping the data block: a JSON parse error on the next event, and audio that starts late or never starts because the reader is out of step with the stream. If you see either, the first thing to check is whether your code reads data_length bytes before it reads the payload.
Why an empty voice value behaves differently
The Piper voice field should be treated as a request for a named voice model. An absent or empty value does not always mean the same thing. In the current OHF-Voice wyoming-piper handler, an absent voice is replaced by the voice configured on the command line before any alias lookup or voice loading happens. The handler’s OmniVoice path is different: there, default, an empty value, or an unknown name falls back to a built-in speaker. Those behaviors belong to different backends, so the table below separates them.

The practical result is that a podcast pipeline may get a plausible voice from one server and an error or unexpected voice from another. Confirm three things before you rely on any fallback: the backend the server is running, the server version, and how your client serializes the voice field. A client that omits the field and a client that sends an empty string are not making the same request.

Piper’s usage guide shows a raw stream played as 22,050 Hz, 16-bit signed little-endian, mono. That is the guide’s example invocation. It is not a rate that every Piper voice uses. The rate depends on the voice model, so take it from the event’s format fields or from the voice’s configuration.

The Wyoming Piper handler reads each synthesized WAV, determines the rate, sample width, and channel count, splits the bytes into chunks measured in sample frames, and attaches the format to every audio chunk. A downstream recorder or renderer should therefore use the format on each chunk, not a value hard-coded at startup. Three details matter when you rebuild the audio:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Raw PCM is not a WAV file. If you write raw bytes, the player or your concatenation step must be given the sample rate, sample width, and channel count explicitly.
- Sample width is in bytes. A 16-bit stream has two bytes per sample per channel, so chunk sizes must be multiples of the frame size.
- Concatenate chunks in event order. Reordering or dropping a chunk produces audible clicks or a shortened segment, not an exception.
If you do not need a streaming client, Piper can also write a WAV file directly. A WAV container carries its own format header, so this path avoids having to track rate and width yourself, though it does not fix a framing bug in a Wyoming client.

Troubleshooting silent or malformed output
- Parse errors on the second or later event: the data block is probably not being consumed. Check that
data_lengthbytes are read beforepayload_lengthbytes. - Audio that is pure noise or sounds sped up or slowed down: the raw playback format is wrong. Compare the rate, width, and channels from the event with what your player is using.
- Silence with no error: check the server log for the voice name it loaded, confirm that the voice model files are present, and confirm that the voice in your request matches a voice the server advertises. The Piper command-line tool requires a configured voice for the Piper backend and stores voice models in its data and download directories.
- Different output on different servers: compare the backend, version, and voice field serialization on each. Behavior for empty or missing voice values is not uniform across backends.
When the stream is correct and the audio is still wrong, test the server alone with a single short sentence before blaming the podcast step. Isolating the speech server from the assembly code narrows the fault quickly.
