rpi, a Rust reimplementation of the Pi coding agent, is reported by its developer to start about 10 times faster and use about 7 times less ready-state memory than the TypeScript Pi agent in a specific Windows 11 benchmark. Those figures describe startup and memory—not faster model responses—and have not been independently reproduced.
What is rpi?
rpi is a Rust coding-agent project that provides both a terminal CLI and an embeddable agent runtime. Its README describes nine composable crates, provider adapters, tools, persistent sessions, and a stable plugin ABI. That makes it relevant both to people who want to run an agent in a terminal and to Rust developers who want to integrate an agent runtime into their own software.
The project README frames its focus as helping people “own the loop.” That is the project’s description, not an independent assessment. Its documented interfaces include interactive use, one-shot prompts, JSON output, an embedded SDK, and Rust plugins. Sessions are stored as JSONL and, according to the README, can resume after a crash from the last committed frame. Project README
How fast and memory-efficient is rpi in the reported comparison?
The project author reported the following comparison in 2026. The figures were repeated in the project README and have not been independently reproduced here.

| Measure | rpi | TypeScript Pi | Reported difference |
|---|---|---|---|
--version wall time |
17.5 ms | 169.5 ms | rpi was 9.7× faster |
| Cold start | 17.7 ms | 189.5 ms | rpi was 10.7× faster |
| Ready-state RSS | 12.0 MiB | 91.5 MiB | rpi used 7.6× less memory |
| Install footprint | 21.8 MiB | Approximately 385 MiB for Pi plus approximately 91 MiB for Node | rpi was roughly 18–22× smaller |
The source headline’s “10 faster startup” and “7 less memory” simplify the measurements: it rounds the 10.7× cold-start result and 7.6× ready-state RSS result. The same report gives 9.7× for the separate --version measurement. These are project-reported benchmark results, not general guarantees. Author’s DEV article
What did the benchmark measure?
The README says the tests used release builds on the same Windows 11 x86_64 machine, with rustc 1.97.1. Both benchmark scripts rebuild and remeasure; the Pi comparison ran offline with isolated configuration directories. The README defines cold start as process spawn through the agent answering its first command, excluding teardown and LLM work. Project README

That definition is important: the cold-start number is not the time to receive a useful answer from a live model. The README explicitly excludes LLM latency, tool-loop throughput, long sessions, and terminal UI frame cost. The results therefore support a narrow conclusion about the measured local startup and memory behavior; they do not establish that rpi completes coding tasks faster or performs better over extended sessions.

- Startup: The reported figures suggest the Rust implementation launches faster for the specific tests and system the author used. Startup behavior on another operating system or machine may differ.
- Memory: The reported RSS is a ready-state measurement, not a complete picture of resource use during every task or over a long session.
- Installation size: The comparison includes Pi and Node in the TypeScript side of the footprint calculation. It is a comparison of the reported installation components, not a universal measure of disk use under every installation method.
- Model speed and task quality: The benchmark does not measure these. A smaller, quicker-starting local runtime does not by itself mean a provider responds faster or that the agent produces better results.
How can you install and use rpi?
The README documents prebuilt binaries, Cargo, Homebrew, and Scoop. Its platform table lists Linux, macOS, and Windows, but says prebuilt binaries are not published for Intel Macs. Cargo installation requires Rust 1.78 or newer. The repository snapshot accessed October 7, 2026, identified release 0.3.9; release and platform details can change, so check the README for current instructions before installing. Project README

- Interactive terminal use: Run the CLI to work with the agent interactively.
- One-shot prompt: Pass a prompt to the CLI when you want a single request rather than an interactive session.
- JSON output: Use the documented JSON-output mode when another tool needs structured output.
- Embedding: Use the Rust SDK or crates to incorporate the runtime into a Rust application; Rust plugins provide another extension route.
Does installing rpi provide a model?
No model service is described as bundled with the local binary or package. The README documents Anthropic and OpenAI-compatible provider configuration, so live model use requires configuring access to a provider. The installation footprint is therefore not the same as the cost or availability of model access.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider rpi?
rpi may be worth evaluating if you need a Rust-based terminal agent, want an embeddable runtime, or care about local launch time and ready-state memory. Those are project capabilities and author-reported measurements; they do not replace testing the workflows that matter to you.
If comparing it with Pi or another coding agent, compare like with like: the startup definition and test environment, when memory is measured, what the install-size calculation includes, platform availability, and whether the product is a CLI, an embeddable library, or both. Also separate local runtime measurements from model latency, tool-loop performance, and long-session behavior. The README’s comparison is maintained by the rpi project, so treat it as the project’s account rather than independent verification.
