Photoswitching liquid crystals are materials whose molecular order or behavior changes when they absorb light. Depending on the chemistry and formulation, illumination can change a liquid crystal’s phase, alignment, optical properties, or shape. Azobenzene is a commonly studied photoswitch: light can change its molecular form, which in turn can alter how the surrounding material is organized. These are research material systems, not one standardized substance or established consumer device.
What makes a liquid crystal photoswitchable?
A liquid crystal combines features of a liquid and an ordered solid: its molecules can move while retaining some collective organization. In a photoswitching system, light-responsive molecules change state under illumination. That molecular change can disturb or reorganize the liquid-crystal host, producing a larger-scale change in phase, alignment, or optical behavior.
Researchers study several architectures. A photoresponsive molecule may be mixed into a liquid-crystal host as a guest, or light-responsive chromophores may be incorporated into liquid-crystalline polymers and networks. The first approach relies on interactions between the guest and host; the second combines the chromophore’s response with the polymer’s liquid-crystal organization. A broad field review groups the work into photoinduced phase transitions, photoalignment and photoorientation, modulation of chiral liquid crystals, and light-driven polymers and networks (Chemical Reviews, 2016).
How light triggers a response
Azobenzene changes molecular shape
Azobenzene is one widely studied photoswitch. A 2019 review describes ultraviolet light driving the molecule from its trans form to its cis form, while visible light or heat can drive the reverse change. Because the two forms can differ in properties such as melting point or glass-transition temperature, selected compounds can undergo reversible light-induced solid-to-liquid transitions. This adjacent solid-to-liquid literature helps explain the switching chemistry; it is not synonymous with liquid-crystal photoswitching (Chemical Reviews, 2019).

The host responds collectively
In a liquid-crystal mixture, changing a guest molecule’s shape and interactions can affect the host’s collective molecular order. An Optica proceedings abstract describes reversible, isothermal phase transitions induced by photoresponsive guest molecules and attributes the effect to the change in guest molecular shape (Optica Publishing Group, 1994). In azobenzene-containing liquid-crystalline polymers, the chromophore’s photoresponse is coupled to the polymer’s self-assembled structure (RSC review, 2014).
The result depends on the photoswitch, host, concentration, phase, illumination, and surrounding conditions. There is no single wavelength or response that applies to every photoswitchable liquid crystal.

What can change when the material is illuminated?
- Phase: A material can move between liquid-crystal phases or between an ordered phase and an isotropic, less ordered state.
- Alignment: Light can alter molecular orientation, an approach studied for photoalignment and photoorientation.
- Optical properties: A change in phase or alignment can modulate how a material interacts with light.
- Shape or motion: Photoresponsive liquid-crystal polymers and networks can convert molecular changes into mechanical response. In these systems, heating from illumination may also contribute to actuation.
These are distinct kinds of response, not guaranteed features of every formulation. The reviewed literature covers them across different material systems rather than presenting one standardized device or a head-to-head performance ranking (Chemical Reviews, 2016; RSC, 2014).
Examples from published studies
A reported guest concentration
An official Optica proceedings abstract by Tsutsumi reports that photoresponsive guest molecules induced reversible isothermal phase transitions in liquid-crystal phases at concentrations of 1–5 mol% (Optica Publishing Group, 1994). That range describes the systems in the abstract; it is not a general mixing recipe or a recommended concentration for other hosts.

Phase changes in doped 8CB
A 2011 study reported that smectic 8CB doped with an azobenzene chromophore changed under ultraviolet irradiation from smectic to nematic and then isotropic phases. With an additional chiral molecule, the reported sequence included smectic, cholesteric, and isotropic phases. These outcomes belong to the studied formulations and should not be assumed for other liquid-crystal hosts (RSC, 2011).
Polymer actuation in air and water
A 2019 study examined both photothermal and photomechanical contributions to actuation in azobenzene-doped liquid-crystal polymers in air and water. The authors discuss this material class in the context of responsive polymers for untethered soft and microrobotic systems; the study does not make every such polymer a practical or commercially available robot actuator (RSC, 2019).

How to compare photoswitching liquid-crystal approaches
There is no source-supported universal ranking across these material systems. A meaningful comparison starts by matching the material design to the intended response:
Recommended Free Tools
- Photoswitch chemistry and wavelength: Identify the chromophore and the light conditions that cause its molecular change. Do not assume that a UV response or a visible-light reset in one system applies to another.
- Material architecture: Distinguish a guest dopant mixed into a host from a chromophore incorporated into a liquid-crystalline polymer or network.
- Host and phase: Check the starting phase and the specific phase or alignment change reported for that formulation.
- Desired output: Separate optical modulation from mechanical actuation; the latter may involve both photochemical and photothermal effects.
- Environment: Consider the conditions under which the response was studied, including whether the system was tested in air or water.
Where the technology stands
Research explores photoswitching liquid crystals for photonics, adaptive materials, and light-driven actuation. The evidence describes synthesized compounds, doped mixtures, films, polymers, and networks, not a standard consumer product. Application directions in the literature should therefore be read as research possibilities rather than proof of a generally available device.
