To make a colored outline that stays in the image, set the foreground color, create a selection, then choose Edit > Stroke. Enter a width in pixels, choose whether the stroke sits inside, centered on, or outside the selection edge, adjust opacity or blending if needed, and click OK. The dashed “marching ants” border alone is only a selection indicator; it is not painted into the image.
Apply a colored outline to a selection
- Choose the desired outline color as the foreground color.
- Use a selection tool to select the part of the image you want to outline.
- Choose Edit > Stroke.
- Enter the stroke width in pixels.
- Set Location to Inside, Center, or Outside. Inside keeps the border within the selected edge; Center straddles it; Outside places it beyond the edge.
- Optionally adjust the blending mode and opacity, then click OK.
Adobe describes this command as creating a colored border around a selection or layer. The result is a painted stroke, rather than the temporary dashed selection boundary. See Adobe’s instructions for applying a colored stroke.
Why the dashed selection border is not the outline
The moving dashed line, commonly called “marching ants,” marks the active selection so you can see its boundary. It does not add color to the image, and it disappears when you deselect. To remove it, choose Select > Deselect, press Ctrl+D on Windows, or press Command+D on macOS. The colored stroke applied with Edit > Stroke remains in the image after deselection. For a crisp edge
If a selection looks jagged, enable anti-aliasing where the selection tool offers it, before making the selection. Anti-aliasing smooths the transition at edge pixels; it is an edge-quality setting, not a stroke placement option.

For a soft transition
Feathering softens the selection boundary by creating a transition zone. It does not simply move or soften the stroke itself, so use it when the selected edge should blend gradually rather than remain crisp.
To improve a cutout
Use Select and Mask to refine or improve the selection edge before applying a stroke. Adobe’s guide to refining and softening selection edges covers anti-aliasing, feathering, and edge refinement.

When a layer effect or path is a better fit
Outline a frame layer
For a frame layer, select that layer and use its fx / Stroke options. There you can choose a solid color, gradient, or pattern, then set the color, size, and position. This is a layer-style workflow rather than a stroke painted around an active selection. See Adobe’s frame stroke instructions.
Work from a path
If the shape is defined by a path, a closed path can be converted to a selection with rendering and selection-operation options. A selection can also be converted into a path; tolerance affects how many anchor points are created and how smooth the resulting path is. See Adobe’s path and selection conversion guidance.

If Edit > Stroke is unavailable or the border is missing
- The Stroke command is disabled: Adobe notes that a shape, text, or Smart Object layer may need rasterizing for this command. Rasterizing changes the layer’s editable representation, so avoid it if retaining that editability matters; use a suitable layer-style workflow instead.
- The outside stroke is not visible: If the layer’s contents extend to the full image boundary, an outside stroke may fall beyond the canvas and not appear.
- You still see only marching ants: The selection remains active, but the dashed indicator itself is not a painted border. Apply Edit > Stroke to add the colored result.
Adobe documents these command behaviors in its current Stroke guidance. An older Adobe reference distinguishes the painted Stroke command, which rasterizes the border into the current layer, from a Stroke layer effect that can be toggled. Because that reference is older, treat the distinction as a general workflow guide and follow the current interface for the exact steps: Adobe’s fill and stroke reference.
