Use albums to organize photos already in your library, Shared Albums to share selected items with a group, and iCloud Shared Photo Library when people want to maintain one collaborative collection. These features work differently: an album is not a separate copy, while a Shared Library lets members edit and delete shared items. The steps below follow Apple’s iOS 26 and macOS 26 documentation; controls can differ by device.
Organize photos with albums and folders
On iPhone, open Photos > Collections > Albums to manage albums, as documented in Apple’s iOS 26 Photos guide. Create an album, give it a name, add photos, and choose a key photo. You can sort albums with the available options or choose a custom order and drag albums. Folders help group albums.
An album organizes access to items in your library; it does not create a separate set of originals. Deleting an album leaves its photos and videos in the library and in any other albums where they appear. The cited workflow is for iPhone, so do not assume the exact taps are identical on iPad or Mac.

Share selected items with a Shared Album
Shared Albums are for selected photos and videos, not a replacement for a joint library. On iPhone or iPad, select the items, tap Share, choose Add to Shared Album, select the album, then tap Post. On Mac, select the items and use Share > Shared Albums to choose an album and add them. Apple’s device-specific instructions are in its Shared Albums guide for iPhone and iPad and Shared Albums guide for Mac.

The album owner can control whether participants may post. Owners or people with management permission can remove content; contributors can remove items they added. For full-resolution originals or complete metadata, keep the originals in your library and share them through a method intended to preserve them. Apple’s download warning is specific to Shared Albums on macOS 26 or earlier; it does not establish that every detail is always stripped.
Use iCloud Shared Photo Library for a common collection
A Shared Photo Library is a shared collection, not simply an album that other people can see. When someone joins, photos and videos they contribute move from their personal library. Members can view, edit, and delete items in the shared collection. Apple’s iOS 26 setup guide says a library can have up to six participants, including its organizer, and each person can belong to one Shared Library at a time. iCloud Photos is required. Items moved to the shared library are unavailable on devices with older software that does not meet compatibility requirements.

Switch library views and choose where new photos go
In iOS 26, Library view options let you show the Personal Library, Shared Library, or Both Libraries. The camera’s Shared Library control lets you choose whether a new photo goes to the shared or personal destination. Apple explains these controls in its Shared Photo Library support guide.

Check the organizer’s iCloud storage
All Shared Library content counts toward the organizer’s iCloud storage. If the creator runs out of storage, new content cannot be added and changes—including edits, favorites, and metadata adjustments—stop syncing. Check the organizer’s available space before setting up a library or adding a large collection.

Keep originals when fidelity matters
A Shared Album download on macOS 26 or earlier may not contain the same information as its original. Treat Shared Albums as a way to share and view selected items, not as an archival copy. If preserving original quality or full metadata matters, retain the originals in your library and use a sharing method suited to those files.
