PhotoPrism’s newer Ollama integration lets its Vision Service use vision-capable Ollama models to generate photo captions and labels. The change arrived in stages: PhotoPrism added Ollama model and data URL support in July 2025, then announced direct integration for caption and label generation in November 2025. The release notes describe new capabilities and configuration options—not a measured gain in accuracy or speed.
What changed in PhotoPrism’s Ollama integration
On July 7, 2025, PhotoPrism build 250707-d28b3101e added support for Ollama model and data URLs in the Vision Service. On November 30, 2025, build 251130-b3068414c announced direct Ollama integration for generating captions and labels, along with improved configuration and scheduling for vision-model work. PhotoPrism later updated its Ollama configuration: its March 5, 2026 release notes list the OLLAMA_BASE_URL and OLLAMA_API_KEY environment variables and a fallback for reasoning-model caption responses. Release notes dated July 28, 2026 describe updated Ollama defaults and improved caption and label quality by disabling reasoning output; that is PhotoPrism’s release description, not an independent benchmark. In practical terms, PhotoPrism can use a configured Ollama model for photo captions and labels. The release announcements do not establish that a particular model produces more accurate results or runs faster than another option.
Ways to run AI features in PhotoPrism
PhotoPrism documents several AI runtimes, but they do not all do the same jobs. The overview distinguishes them by task and hosting arrangement:

These roles and requirements come from PhotoPrism’s AI overview. Its documentation does not provide a comparative benchmark across these runtimes or model-specific GPU recommendations.
How to connect PhotoPrism to local Ollama
PhotoPrism’s setup guide describes a Compose-based arrangement with an optional Ollama service. Ollama may run alongside PhotoPrism or on a separate server; the latter can be useful when inference hardware is hosted elsewhere. Follow the current Compose configuration in PhotoPrism’s Ollama setup guide rather than assuming a particular service name or configuration applies to every deployment.

- Provide a vision-capable model. Configure the model for PhotoPrism’s vision work as described in its setup guide and model configuration.
- Configure the endpoint and credentials as applicable. PhotoPrism’s release notes list
OLLAMA_BASE_URLandOLLAMA_API_KEY. For a local instance, use the endpoint appropriate to your deployment; do not assume a cloud API key applies to every local setup. - Enable the relevant PhotoPrism vision work. Configure the model and scheduling through PhotoPrism’s documented settings, then allow the service to process captions and labels.
PhotoPrism recommends a GPU-equipped server for Ollama. For NVIDIA GPU acceleration, its guide says the NVIDIA Container Toolkit is needed. The available documentation does not specify a particular GPU or establish a minimum configuration for a given Ollama model.

Can PhotoPrism use Ollama Cloud instead?
Yes. PhotoPrism documents an Ollama Cloud path, so you do not have to operate a local Ollama instance to use an Ollama endpoint. Its cloud setup page instructs users to configure OLLAMA_BASE_URL and OLLAMA_API_KEY on the PhotoPrism service. PhotoPrism can then use the Ollama Cloud endpoint for Ollama models configured in vision.yml. See PhotoPrism’s Ollama Cloud setup instructions.

This is distinct from running Ollama locally: the request goes to a cloud endpoint, and local inference hardware is not needed for that path. PhotoPrism’s documented OpenAI API integration is another cloud option, with its own API key and network-access requirements.
Security considerations for a local Ollama server
PhotoPrism’s Ollama setup guide warns that Ollama does not require authentication by default. Keep port 11434 limited to trusted networks, or put the service behind a reverse proxy with access control. Do not expose an unauthenticated Ollama endpoint directly to an untrusted network.

What PhotoPrism’s release notes do—and do not—establish
The documented change is integration and configuration support for generating captions and labels with Ollama models. The cited PhotoPrism materials do not publish accuracy, latency, throughput, or resource-use comparisons for specific models or GPU cards. They also do not quantify how much the July or November changes improved results. Treat claims about which model is best or how much faster or more accurate it is as unverified unless supported by separate testing.
