Researchers demonstrated solution-processable inks that print blue- and green-emitting structures using crown-ether-assisted hafnium and zirconium halide assemblies. The 2024 work shows that these materials can form emissive thin films and 3D shapes; it does not establish a ready-to-buy ink or a recipe for ordinary desktop printers.
What the researchers made
A team led by UC Berkeley materials scientist Peidong Yang assembled hafnium- or zirconium-containing halide octahedral units with the crown ether 18-crown-6. In the resulting supramolecular materials, the metal-halide units provide the light-emitting function, while the crown-ether-assisted assembly helps stabilise and pack them.
This is not the same as a conventional lead-halide perovskite nanocrystal ink. The 2024 Science paper, “Supramolecular assembly of blue and green halide perovskites”, describes assemblies based on hafnium and zirconium halide units.
How the two demonstrated compositions differ
The team reported two emissive powders, with different compositions and colors. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) figures below are the values reported in the paper for those powders—not a general measure of all perovskites or a measured rating for every printed object.

The paper describes the emissions as near-unity for the blue material and high for the green material. The distinct percentages matter: the 96.2% figure applies to the blue-emitting hafnium composition, not to both colors.
How the ink and printing demonstration worked
The group account says the researchers used a solution-based synthesis at 200°C, in contrast with solid-state reactions at 1000°C previously used for these types of materials. They dispersed the emissive material in non-polar solvents and added dissolved polystyrene to improve processability. The paper abstract reports that the powders retained high PLQY in solution-processable semiconductor inks under ambient conditions.

With the inks, the team made thin films and emissive 3D-printed architectures, including miniature Eiffel Towers. The paper describes high spatial resolution qualitatively; the available reporting does not give a numeric resolution, print speed, or consumer-printer specification. Chemistry World reports that the pictured Eiffel Tower prints were excited with 254 nm ultraviolet light. That is a detail of the demonstration, not evidence that a particular consumer lamp or wavelength will work with other materials or setups.

What the result does—and does not—show
The demonstration establishes a materials route and proof of printing: the researchers synthesised emissive assemblies, formulated processable inks, and printed light-emitting forms. It does not establish commercial availability, a retail product, a validated supply source, compatibility with arbitrary printers, or consumer performance such as long-term durability, cost, and repeatable results outside the reported work.

The useful advance is the combination of emissive hafnium and zirconium assemblies with a lower-temperature solution route and printable formulations. The findings are specific to the compositions and conditions described by the researchers; they should not be read as a general printer recipe.
