Researchers demonstrated a laboratory method that uses light to adjust plutonium and uranium oxidation states, then separates the resulting species by ion-exchange chromatography. The method achieved a reported separation yield above 90% and a separation factor of 322, but it is a proof of principle—not an industrially validated reprocessing process or a guarantee of greater overall safety.

What the researchers demonstrated

In a 2022 paper in Chemical Communications, DiMucci and colleagues used photochemistry to change the oxidation states of plutonium and uranium in acidic water. They then used anion-exchange chromatography to separate the resulting species. The authors describe the approach as an alternative to adding selected chemical redox agents.

  • Plutonium was photoreduced from Pu(IV) to Pu(III).
  • Uranium was photoreduced from uranyl U(VI), written UO22+, to U(IV).
  • The reactions proceeded in aqueous hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, with 2-propanol serving as a sacrificial electron donor.

The authors reported a separation yield greater than 90% and a separation factor of 322. They also reported a total processing time of 90 minutes and said the procedure proceeded without oxygen exclusion. These are results from the authors’ laboratory experiments, not performance guarantees for a plant or a commercial-scale operation. The paper in Chemical Communications.

Why replacing some chemical redox agents may matter

Conventional redox-agent additions can create process and waste concerns, depending on the reagent and facility. The authors’ rationale is that avoiding selected harsh agents could reduce exposure to issues they identify, including incompatibility with modern processing facilities or waste-stream requirements, vigorous bubbling or splattering during some additions, and corrosion associated with some reagents.

That is a specific potential benefit, not proof that the photochemical route is safer in every respect. The reported study is not a full comparative risk assessment. Light-driven chemistry does not remove the radiation, containment, safeguards, criticality, or licensing demands associated with nuclear materials.

How the photochemical method compares with reagent addition

Consideration Photochemical approach in the study Chemical redox-agent addition
How oxidation states are adjusted Light-driven reduction of Pu(IV) and U(VI) in acidic solution, using 2-propanol as an electron donor. Selected chemical redox agents are added to control oxidation states; the paper discusses concerns tied to some agents.
Waste and process concerns Could avoid introducing the selected redox agents discussed by the authors; the study does not establish total waste impacts at plant scale. The authors cite potential facility compatibility and waste-stream concerns for certain agents.
Specific hazards discussed Not established as eliminating process hazards overall. The authors discuss splattering or vigorous bubbling during some additions and corrosion from some reagents.
Demonstrated separation performance Authors report yield greater than 90% and separation factor 322 in laboratory experiments. A directly comparable performance figure is not stated in the cited study.
Scale of evidence Proof of principle; industrial-scale comparative performance is not established. The study does not provide an industrial-scale comparison.

What the results do—and do not—show

The key result is a laboratory demonstration that photochemistry can prepare plutonium and uranium species for chromatographic separation under the reported acidic conditions. The authors’ abstract says, “We demonstrated herein that photochemistry can be used as an alternative to those chemical agents.” That statement is from the paper’s authors, including corresponding authors Stosh A. Kozimor and Benjamin W. Stein.

  • Easy to Use: ERICKHILL Radiation Detector ready to measure instantly upon powering on—no complicated setup required. All three field strengths display directly on the screen, letting you see electric, magnetic, and RF readings at a glance. Ideal for users of all experience levels.
  • Clear Color-Coded Screen: The large display features a three-color backlight indicator (green, orange, and red) that changes based on radiation levels, giving you instant visual feedback on EMF exposure to easily assess low, moderate, and high radiation zones.
  • Triple Alarm Modes: Equipped with sound, screen, and light alerts that help you identify areas with higher radiation levels, this EMF meter ensures you’re always aware of your environment. You can easily turn off the sound alerts if preferred, while the visual and light indicators will still highlight areas with higher radiation, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.
  • Convenient and Energy-Saving Design: Our emf detector equipped with unit switching for customized readings, a Type-C charging port for fast, easy charging, and an automatic shutoff feature to save battery, this EMF detector is portable, energy-efficient, and made for frequent use.

The result does not show that the method is operating in a commercial nuclear fuel cycle, handles actual spent fuel or complex, highly radioactive dissolver streams, or has been validated for larger-scale processing. The paper discusses possible broader applications, but those possibilities should not be confused with demonstrated deployment.

Equipment context

The paper reports using commercially available laboratory equipment, including a photoreactor, but does not identify a consumer model. A laboratory photoreactor is the relevant equipment category; the study does not validate consumer lighting or any particular product for reproducing actinide experiments. It also does not specify a vendor or resin model for the anion-exchange chromatography supplies.
