A phone that has been off for days may still show the right time because a low-power clock circuit can keep counting while the main system is shut down, as long as that circuit still has power. When the phone starts, automatic network time may correct its clock. If its timekeeping hardware has lost power or automatic setting is unavailable, the time may be wrong until it synchronizes or you set it manually.

What keeps time while the phone is off?

A phone’s displayed date and time are the software wall clock; they are not the same thing as the hardware that can keep a time count while the main system is off. In general, a real-time clock (RTC) uses a low-power oscillator to count time. RTC designs can continue through a system shutdown when backup power is available. If that power is lost, the saved time can reset. This is a general description of RTC design, not a guarantee that every smartphone uses the same arrangement.

“Dead” can mean that the phone cannot start, not necessarily that every circuit has lost power. Whether a particular phone retains time depends on its model and the power available to its timekeeping hardware. Do not assume every phone has a separate coin-cell backup battery.

How does the phone correct the time after it starts?

Once running, the phone may use an automatic time source to set or correct its wall clock. Android’s SystemClock documentation says, “The wall clock can be set by the user or the phone network.” It also describes a network time clock whose reading relies on a recent successful synchronization event. That means a phone returning from shutdown might use time retained locally, correct it through a network synchronization, or need a manual adjustment if automatic setting cannot work. A network connection is not established as the only possible time source on every device.

There is no universal recovery duration or accuracy figure: the available documentation does not quantify how often phones retain or recover time after shutdown.

Why might the time be right but the time zone wrong?

Keeping a time count and choosing the local time zone are separate tasks. Android provides separate controls for automatic date and time and automatic time zone; location may contribute to determining the time zone. Apple also documents automatic time and time-zone behavior, along with manual options. A clock can therefore have a valid time while showing the wrong local hour if the time zone is incorrect.

What to check if the displayed time is wrong

  1. Check automatic date and time. On Android, open Set time, date and time zone for the available automatic and manual controls. On iPhone, consult Apple’s date and time settings guide.
  2. Check the time zone separately. Confirm that automatic time zone is enabled if you want the phone to select it. If it selects the wrong zone, use the manual option documented for your device.
  3. Allow automatic setting to work. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance covers cases where time or time zone cannot be changed automatically, including connection-related checks: If you can’t change the time or time zone on your Apple device.
  4. Set the time manually if needed. Both Apple and Google document manual controls. If automatic setting is unavailable or gives an incorrect result, use the instructions for your phone’s model and software.

Why behavior differs by phone model

RTC behavior is not uniform across smartphones. For example, Xiaomi says its REDMI 15 supports a shutdown alarm in its Clock app and notes that the feature requires sufficient battery power. This is a specific model feature, not evidence that all phones can run alarms—or preserve time in the same way—while shut down.
