If Phone Link loses its connection to your Android phone each time you restart your PC, you do not need to unlink and re-pair on every boot. Start with the lightest official recovery step, check the conditions the connection depends on, and escalate only if the problem returns. Microsoft’s support pages describe these steps but do not explain why a reboot breaks the link, so the fix depends on finding the trigger on your own setup.

What the reboot pattern means and what is not established

Users report the same pattern in community posts: Phone Link works until the PC restarts, then shows the phone as disconnected or asks for a reset. One such report is titled “Phone link needs reset after every reboot”. That is an individual account, not evidence that the problem is widespread or that a particular cause is responsible.

Microsoft’s current Phone Link troubleshooting, reset, and FAQ pages cover reconnection, account, network, and reset procedures. They do not identify a cause for a failure that recurs specifically after a reboot. Several explanations are plausible, but none is confirmed by Microsoft for this pattern:

  • Phone Link or Link to Windows starting before the network or Bluetooth stack is ready after boot.
  • Battery optimization or background restrictions on the Android side stopping the Link to Windows service.
  • A PC-side change, such as a Windows update, a Bluetooth driver change, or a Phone Link app update, affecting how the pairing is stored.
  • Router or network behavior, such as separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks or client isolation, after the PC reconnects.

Treat each of these as something to test, not as the answer. The steps below are ordered so that you can rule them out in a sensible sequence.

Step 1: Write down the exact setup and symptom

Before changing anything, record the details that decide which recovery step applies. Support staff and Microsoft’s feedback channels ask for the same information.

  • Phone platform: Android or iPhone. Microsoft’s reconnect and reset instructions are written for Android, and feature requirements differ by platform.
  • Windows version and build (run winver from the Run dialog).
  • Versions of the Phone Link app on the PC and Link to Windows on the phone.
  • Which feature fails: calls, messages, notifications, or the Phone screen.
  • Whether the phone shows as offline or Phone Link asks for a new QR code pairing.
  • The exact error text, if one appears, and how long after boot the failure starts.

The Phone Link requirements page lists what each feature needs, which helps confirm that your phone and PC meet them before you troubleshoot. See Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup.

Step 2: Confirm the account and app state on the phone

For Android reconnection, Microsoft recommends two checks first. Make sure Link to Windows is up to date in the Play Store, and confirm that the phone and the PC are signed in to the same Microsoft account. A mismatch can produce a link that looks paired but does not reconnect after the PC restarts.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference

If both checks pass and the problem continues, Microsoft’s troubleshooting sequence includes signing out and unlinking the account on the phone, then adding the device again in Phone Link. Do this only if the lighter steps in Step 4 fail, because it removes the existing pairing. The full procedure is in Microsoft’s Troubleshooting the Phone Link page.

Step 3: Check the connection conditions

Some Phone Link features depend on a live network connection, and the Phone screen feature is the most network-sensitive. Microsoft’s Phone screen troubleshooting page says that both devices must be on, able to communicate, and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. It also says that mobile data in place of Wi-Fi can prevent the feature from working, and that separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks can keep the devices from seeing each other. Check these points on the phone and PC:

  • The phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the PC, not mobile data.
  • If your router broadcasts 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks under different names, both devices should be on the same one.
  • Battery saver is not limiting background activity on the phone. Microsoft’s broader troubleshooting advice names Battery saver as a possible cause of connection drops.
  • The router does not isolate Wi-Fi clients from each other. Microsoft notes that router configuration can stop devices on the same network from communicating.

These checks matter most for network-dependent features. Messages and notifications may behave differently, so note which feature fails before deciding how much weight to give this step.

Step 4: Start with the least disruptive recovery

Microsoft’s reset guidance separates a soft reset from a full re-pair. The table compares the three options by how much they change and what they touch.

Recovery step What it changes Scope Use it when
Soft reset: toggle Phone Link off and on Restarts the Phone Link connection on the PC PC only; the pairing is kept First attempt after each reboot, to see if the link recovers
Unlink and re-pair Removes the account link on the phone and adds the device again in Phone Link Phone and PC pairing The soft reset fails and the account and app checks in Step 2 pass
Full reset on both sides Clears the Link to Windows app state, removes the device from the Microsoft devices page, unlinks the PC in Windows settings, and resets Phone Link in its app settings Phone and PC, all stored state Re-pairing does not hold, or the connection breaks again after the next reboot

Soft reset: toggle Phone Link off and on

Microsoft describes this as the first recovery step. Open Settings, go to Bluetooth & devices, turn Phone Link off and on, and then reopen the Phone Link app. Menu labels can differ by Windows release, so look for the Phone Link entry under the same area if the wording is slightly different.

If the phone reconnects after this step, the reboot problem may be a startup timing issue. Keep a note of how long after boot you had to do this, because that timing is useful if you later report the problem.

Unlink and re-pair

Use this step only after the account and app checks pass and the soft reset does not hold. On the phone, sign out of Link to Windows or unlink the account, then pair the phone again from Phone Link on the PC. Re-pairing is the step most likely to remove a stale pairing, but it does not explain why the pairing breaks after a reboot, so check whether the problem returns after the next restart.

Full reset on both sides

Microsoft’s Android reset procedure has four parts. Force-stop Link to Windows on the phone. Remove the linked device from the Microsoft devices page. Unlink the PC in Windows settings. Reset Phone Link in its app settings. Then pair the devices again. Follow the exact steps in Microsoft’s reset guide for Android and PC, because the order matters.

A full reset clears more state than the other steps, so use it only when lighter steps have failed. It does not guarantee that the next reboot will behave differently.

Step 5: If the problem returns after each reboot

If the link fails again after a restart, despite the steps above, the remaining options are diagnostic rather than repair. Keep a short log over several reboots: the time of each restart, whether the phone reconnected without intervention, the step that worked, and any error text. A pattern in that log is more useful to Microsoft than a general description of the problem.

Send the report through Phone Link’s own feedback option under Feedback & Community, or through Feedback Hub on Windows. Include the setup details from Step 1, the reboot log, and whether a fresh pair works until the next restart. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page directs users to these channels. Until a cause is confirmed, avoid buying hardware for this symptom. The steps Microsoft documents are software and settings changes, and no physical device is needed to test them.

Also check the Phone Link FAQ for current limits and feature requirements, since behavior can change between app versions: Microsoft’s Phone Link FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whether a reset after every reboot is a bug, a settings conflict, or a network issue depends on what your log shows, not on a general rule. A soft reset that holds after a restart points to startup timing. A full re-pair that breaks again after the next boot is worth reporting with the log.
