Phone AI agents do not make apps obsolete: they need a way to reach the services, data and actions those apps provide. That route might be a structured action supplied by an app, a connection to a service’s backend, or automation that operates an app’s screen. Each has different limits, and none means an agent can freely control every app on a phone.
Why do phone agents need apps?
An agent can plan a task, but it still needs an action path to carry it out. To book a ride, for example, it needs access to a ride service’s booking capability. That access might not require opening the app’s visible screens: a developer can expose a structured action, or a service can offer a backend integration. If neither route is available, an agent may instead interact with the app’s user interface, where that option is supported.
Android describes its goal as making the operating system an active task orchestrator rather than only an application launchpad. That is Google’s product framing, not an independent finding. In practice, orchestration still depends on which capabilities developers expose, which integrations a platform supports, and what the user permits.

How can an AI agent act through a phone app?
App-defined actions
Android’s AppFunctions let developers expose discrete app capabilities for on-device agents to discover and run. This is a structured route: the app’s developer decides which actions are available, rather than asking the agent to infer every step from the screen. Android also documents remote MCP servers as a complementary, server-side integration route. Both approaches depend on a developer or service making the relevant capability available. Backend integrations
A connected service can give an agent access to a task without having it navigate that service’s interface. The agent is still relying on software capabilities and access rules; it simply may not need to open the app on screen. Google says Gemini uses a connected-app route when it can complete a task that way, rather than using screen automation.
Screen automation
Screen automation lets an agent read and interact with an app’s interface. It can provide a route into apps that have not exposed a dedicated action, but it must interpret the current screen and controls. That makes it sensitive to app state and misunderstandings, and it remains subject to permissions and platform support. Android separately describes Computer Control as an upcoming API for an OEM-preloaded assistant to interact with app interfaces without requiring the target app to add code; that is distinct from a general, universally available phone agent.

Can Gemini control apps on Android?
Google’s Gemini Apps Help page, accessed October 7, 2026, describes screen automation as a beta for select apps. Its listed supported phones are the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL; Samsung Galaxy S26 Series; Galaxy Z Flip 8; and Galaxy Z Fold 8. The page says users must be at least 18, in the United States or Korea, and use English or Korean with a personal Google Account. Work, school and supervised accounts are excluded; Pixel 10 devices are not supported in Korea. Google says rollout is gradual, so meeting the listed criteria does not guarantee access. Because device lists and availability can change, check Google’s current Gemini help page before relying on the feature.

What permissions and safeguards apply?
For screen automation, the user must grant the Google app automation permission separately for each app. The available choices are always allow, ask each time, or do not allow. Gemini provides a progress view and a control to stop a task; some tasks pause so the user can take over. Certain consequential final steps, such as confirming a ride or placing an order, may be left for the user to complete.
Google says automation begins only after the user asks, is restricted to apps the user allows, and is designed to require confirmation before purchases. Its security post also describes real-time progress indicators, a persistent notification chip while automation runs out of view, and planned activity visibility in Android Privacy Dashboard. These are Google’s descriptions of safeguards and roadmap, not an independent security audit. See Google’s security post.

Google warns that Gemini can misunderstand requests, tap the wrong control, make unintended changes or incorrectly report a task as complete. Its help page states: “Gemini is still learning and can make mistakes, so avoid using screen automation for emergencies or tasks involving sensitive information.” Google also advises against entering sign-in or payment details directly into the chat.
How does Apple’s approach compare?
Apple documents App Intents as a structured way for apps to expose actions and content to Apple Intelligence, Siri and system features. Its documentation describes schemas as a contract for identifying and understanding those actions and content, and explains how transferable entities can support moving content between apps. These pages establish a developer integration mechanism, not that Apple offers the same consumer screen-automation feature or availability described for Gemini. They also do not establish a controlled comparison of Android and iOS agent coverage or reliability.
What does research say about agents completing phone tasks?
A 2024 AutoDroid paper by its authors reports 71.3% task-completion success with GPT-4 on a benchmark of 158 manually labeled tasks across 13 open-source Android apps. The authors also report 90.9% action-selection accuracy in that experiment. These figures describe AutoDroid on its own test set, not the success rate of Gemini or other commercial agents on current phones. The paper appeared at ACM MobiCom 2024: AutoDroid: LLM-powered Task Automation in Android.
