Philips Hue’s ambition is no longer just to let people switch bulbs on and off from a phone. Founder George Yianni describes light as a way to shape a room’s atmosphere, synchronize entertainment, and support everyday routines. Recent examples include AI-assisted scenes and automations, new TV-sync options, and an integration with Nanoleaf decorative panels. Hue is broadening what connected lighting can do, not abandoning lighting as its core product.
How Hue grew from an app idea into a platform
Hue began around 2008 as a concept for controlling lights with a smartphone. Yianni, then working on remote controls for Philips LivingColors, used an iPhone mock-up to explore lighting controls without repeatedly building hardware. The concept became an internal venture and developed into a connected-lighting product.
In a 2020 retrospective, Yianni said the team placed 100 early Hue kits in homes, collected participant diaries, and interviewed users while developing the retail product. Signify presents that work as consumer validation, not a sales figure. Apple’s decision to sell Hue bulbs in its stores was another early signal to the team that the product offered something distinct. Signify’s account of Hue’s development describes the process.
That origin helps explain why Hue is now discussed as a platform rather than only a range of app-controlled bulbs. Signify says user feedback informs its roadmap, while the company also leaves room for ideas that users may not have requested. Yianni described the early ambition as “not just at a lighting product, but at an industry-defining paradigm shift for how we approach the way we interact with light in our homes.” That is his retrospective characterization, rather than an independently established industry verdict.

What “beyond smart lighting” means
Yianni’s broader view is that connected lights can do more than provide remote control. Signify’s account of his vision points to three roles for light: shaping ambience, participating in entertainment, and supporting wellbeing-related routines.
Ambience and decoration
Changing a room’s lighting can change its feel without changing its walls or curtains. Hue’s color and scene controls extend the bulb from a basic utility into a decorative element: the same room can feel different depending on the light chosen and when it is used.
Entertainment synchronization
Hue can synchronize lighting with on-screen content, making lights part of a viewing setup rather than merely background illumination. Yianni’s point is not that lighting stops being lighting, but that it can respond to what people are watching or listening to.

Wellbeing as an ambition, not a proven health outcome
Signify describes supporting healthy circadian rhythms and better sleep as part of Hue’s intended direction. That is a company-stated product ambition; the sources cited here do not establish that Hue lighting clinically improves sleep or health. Yianni’s broader rationale is that light is present throughout daily life: “Lighting is all around us, all the time, so it should be doing something more than just being on or off.” Signify’s interview with Yianni presents this as his view of what connected lighting should become.
Recent features put the strategy into practice
In a September 3, 2026 interview, TechRadar reported two AI features discussed by Yianni. SpatialAware uses the positions of lights in a room to create and apply scenes. Custom AI Behaviors lets users describe a desired routine in natural language and turns that description into an automation. Yianni said Hue is trying to apply AI to specific functions rather than add it without a user purpose: “There’s a push for AI for the sake of it, and we’ve really tried to shy away from that.” TechRadar’s interview with Yianni reports the features and his explanation.
The same interview described Philips Hue Play Screen Sync, a camera-based way to synchronize lights with a TV. TechRadar reported that one light strip can be used over Bluetooth without a Hue Bridge in that setup, and also discussed an updated 4K HDMI Sync Box option. These are specific entertainment configurations, not evidence that every Hue product or feature works without a Bridge. Setup and compatibility depend on the product.

Why Hue is integrating with other brands
The Nanoleaf collaboration illustrates another part of the expanded approach: Hue is willing to connect with products from other companies when they fill a user need. A September 8, 2026 T3 interview report described a collaboration involving Nanoleaf decorative panels. Hue representatives said the panels addressed a gap for people who wanted the Hue experience across rooms. Yianni explained the logic this way: “If what’s there is already a great fit, why would we do it ourselves?” T3’s report on the collaboration attributes the quote to him.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe report also says selected Hue switches, including Tap Dial, can control Sonos speakers. That is an example of Hue controls reaching beyond lights, though it does not mean all switches or speaker setups share that capability. Hue representatives said other brand and platform integrations were under consideration, but did not provide a specific future partnership roadmap.

Hue’s evolution can be read across five connected dimensions:

| Dimension | What Hue’s expanded approach adds |
|---|---|
| Control of individual lights | The original proposition: control connected lights from a smartphone. |
| Room ambience and decoration | Use scenes and changing light to alter the atmosphere of a room. |
| Entertainment synchronization | Coordinate lighting with TV content and other entertainment contexts. |
| AI-assisted customization and automation | Use room-aware scenes and natural-language descriptions to create lighting behaviors. |
| Integration with other brands | Bring compatible decorative panels and selected speaker controls into the wider experience. |
These are strategic dimensions of Hue’s own product direction, not a like-for-like comparison with rival systems. The through-line is still connected lighting: Hue is trying to make light more responsive to rooms, activities, and routines, with software and partnerships extending what the physical lights can do.
Signify’s 2020 retrospective also noted that Hue appeared at number 21 on Fortune’s list of the “100 greatest designs of modern times.” That is a dated design-list placement, not a current ranking of sales or market share. The available sources do not establish Hue’s current market share or sales separately from Signify’s broader business.
