In 2008, Philips descendants Frans Otten and Warner Philips were pursuing an LED-lighting opportunity through Lemnis Lighting, a startup incubated by their company Tendris Holding. The headline’s “fortune” was a hope, not a reported outcome: the available accounts do not establish that the venture made them wealthy or that Lemnis’s original consumer-bulb business continues today.

Who were the Philips descendants behind Lemnis Lighting?

Valerie Thompson’s May 18, 2008, EE Times report identified Frans Otten and Warner Philips as great-grandsons of Anton Philips. It described Lemnis Lighting as a venture incubated by Tendris Holding, which EE Times said Otten, Philips and two others formed in 2002 to support businesses associated with reducing carbon emissions.

Lemnis was not presented as a Philips subsidiary. The report also named engineer John Rooijmans as a major Lemnis shareholder and said he developed and held a patent for a high-brightness LED used in the company’s systems. Those details describe the company as reported in 2008; they do not establish its present ownership or structure.

Why did the Philips name matter?

The family’s connection to lighting reaches back to the company’s origins. Philips says Philips & Co. was founded in Eindhoven in 1891 by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik, initially to make reliable, affordable incandescent bulbs. According to the Philips Museum’s account of Gerard Philips, early production focused on carbon-filament lamps.

Gerard’s brother Anton joined the business in 1895, built sales networks and later led its expansion into products beyond lighting, including X-ray tubes and radios, as the Philips Museum’s history of Anton Philips recounts. The family name therefore carried a long association with the lighting industry—but that history is separate from Lemnis’s ownership and results.

What LED bulb was Lemnis trying to sell?

EE Times described Lemnis’s first product as a retrofit LED bulb designed to replace a 40-watt incandescent bulb. The report described a heat-sink ring around the bulb and gave its then-current price as $39, down from $59 the year before. Those are prices reported in 2008, not evidence of current availability or cost.

Otten framed the product as a selective replacement rather than a reason to change every bulb at once: “We don’t advocate replacing all bulbs in the home with ours, but where it makes sense, where you have a 40-W bulb now, you can use an LED bulb.” The article does not supply the bulb’s lumen output, socket type, dimming compatibility, energy use, warranty or a current listing, so it cannot support a like-for-like comparison with bulbs sold today.

The lifespan was a company claim, not an independent test result

Otten said the product could last “after 50,000 hours of use” or 30 years, whichever came first. The same report quotes his argument that a long-lived product could let a startup enter a market where building traditional bulb distribution and production capacity would be daunting. EE Times did not report independent testing that verified the lifespan, so the figure should be understood as Otten’s 2008 claim, not a proven service life.

Did the Philips family make another fortune?

The headline does not answer that question, and the cited accounts do not establish that Otten or Warner Philips became wealthy from Lemnis. Nor do they establish what became of the particular 40-watt-equivalent bulb or whether the consumer venture continued in its original form.

Tendris’s current-facing description of NTL Lemnis presents it as an independent joint venture involving Electronics India Ltd. and Lemnis Lighting B.V., with LED-lighting markets in Europe, India and Africa. That description does not resolve the fate of the 2008 consumer-bulb business or confirm the descendants’ financial outcomes.

How Philips’s later lighting business fits the story

Philips continued to develop LED lighting independently of the Lemnis story. A 2016 Philips Lighting prospectus records the introduction of Philips Hue, an internet-enabled LED home-lighting system, in 2012. It also says Philips Lighting separated from Royal Philips and began operating as a standalone company in 2016. These milestones provide later industry context; they are not Lemnis products or evidence of a relationship between Lemnis and Philips Lighting.
