Microsoft announced on February 20, 2026, that Phil Spencer would step back from leading its gaming business and that Sarah Bond had decided to leave the company. Asha Sharma was appointed to lead Microsoft Gaming, with Matt Booty becoming Chief Content Officer. Spencer said he would advise through the summer; Microsoft did not give a specific reason for Bond’s departure. Subsequent announcements in July and September described a wider Xbox restructuring, with some studio changes completed and others still under consultation as of September 22.
What happened to Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond?
In its February 20, 2026 announcement, Microsoft said Spencer had decided to retire from the company after more than 38 years at Microsoft, including 12 years leading Gaming, according to Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella. Spencer described his own move as stepping back and starting a new chapter. He said he had discussed the decision with Nadella the previous fall and would remain in an advisory role through the summer to support the handoff. Those details are the company’s account of the transition.
In the same announcement, Spencer said Bond had decided to leave Microsoft “to begin a new chapter.” The message credited her with work on Xbox platform strategy, Game Pass, cloud gaming, hardware launches and major company moments, but did not explain her reason for leaving. The official announcement does not establish a private motive.

Who became the new Xbox CEO?
Microsoft named Asha Sharma Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, reporting to Nadella. The company’s April 23, 2026 editor’s note says Microsoft Gaming became known as XBOX and Sharma’s title became CEO XBOX. Microsoft also appointed Matt Booty Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, reporting to Sharma. The current XBOX leadership page checked October 4, 2026 lists Sharma as CEO, Booty as Chief Content Officer and Helen Chiang as Chief Operating Officer.

Sharma was Spencer’s named successor. Microsoft’s announcement did not present Bond as a successor candidate or say she was passed over; it announced her departure alongside Sharma’s appointment.
How the leadership change widened into a restructuring
July 6: planned role reductions and studio changes
In a July 6, 2026 employee message, Sharma said XBOX was beginning what she called its “most significant restructure in XBOX history.” She announced planned reductions of approximately 3,200 roles throughout FY27, including approximately 1,600 role eliminations announced that day. These are management’s announced figures, not independently audited totals. Sharma cited business and organizational challenges, including weaker-than-expected growth in several bets and organizational complexity.

Sharma said announced first-party games or projects were not being cancelled as part of those reductions. The July message also compared XBOX’s margins with those of other platform and publishing businesses, describing them as “3-10x lower”; it did not provide the underlying comparator set or methodology, so this is management’s characterization rather than an independently verified comparison.

September 22: further reductions and unresolved studio processes
On September 22, 2026, Booty reported 268 additional role eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios and central functions. He said actions completed since July had brought the announced restructuring roughly three-quarters of the way through.
Booty also announced studio reorganizations, including combining Playground and Turn 10 as one studio focused on Forza and Fable. He said Compulsion and Double Fine had returned to management in August and Undead Labs had transitioned on similar terms. Two agreements for Ninja Theory had fallen through; XBOX would begin consultation on a proposed closure while exploring other options. Consultation involving Arkane remained underway and was expected to continue through the end of 2026. A proposed closure or consultation is not a completed outcome.

What is established—and what remains unclear
The February announcement established the executive transition: Spencer was stepping back and planned to advise through the summer, Bond was leaving, Sharma was appointed to lead Microsoft Gaming, and Booty was named Chief Content Officer. The July and September messages then described a separate, broader organizational restructuring affecting roles, studio management and operating structure.
Microsoft’s official statements do not explain Bond’s specific reason for leaving. Nor do the announcements establish what the leadership transition or restructuring will mean for future consoles, games or release decisions. Nadella also said Microsoft reached over 500 million monthly active users in the February announcement; that is a company-reported figure, not a separately documented measurement in the announcement.
