Phantom Blade Zero’s “66 days” is the story’s countdown, not a tally of problems with the game. In a hands-on session at Gamescom, Game Informer’s Kyle Hilliard found acrobatic swordplay, winding levels and a memorable boss encounter, while noting that his appointment covered only a preview build. The game is listed for PlayStation 5 and PC, with a release date of October 29, 2026; PlayStation says it will be October 28 in the US and select regions.
What does “66 days” mean in Phantom Blade Zero?
Soul, the protagonist, is betrayed and left with a fatal condition after receiving a tainted replacement heart. He has 66 days to find a cure. That number also appears in Sixty-Six Days, a challenge mode described by the developers and Epic Games Store: each death removes one day. It is not a count of bugs, flaws or problems identified in the hands-on preview.

The game’s setting is Wulin, a dark wuxia world. S-Game founder and CEO Soulframe Liang described it on the PlayStation Blog: “The Wulin, our dark wuxia world, is a place rife with conflict and intrigue, where our protagonist, Soul, will encounter citizens in need along his journey.” PlayStation says side quests may open story paths.

What did the Gamescom hands-on preview find?
Hilliard’s session began near the start, with the introduction and tutorials, before S-Game advanced him to later material because appointment time was limited. His impressions therefore describe selected sections of a preview build, not the complete game or a technical performance test.

Combat and movement
Hilliard found the motion-captured, acrobatic sword movement smooth to control, with an action-film feel. An early fight on a carriage looked impressive, though its counters and strikes felt to him like a sequence of QTE moments. He explicitly noted that it was not a QTE.
Exploration
The levels he explored had winding routes, shortcuts, stealth approaches and characters offering missions. That impression fits the wider structure described by the Epic Games Store: eight connected regions, rather than an open world, with non-linear routes through them.

The Lion Dance boss
The Lion Dance encounter was a standout. In its second stage, pillars rise as the boss moves among them and fires projectiles. Small lion-head enemies distract Soul; defeating them lets the player take a lion mask and return fire. Hilliard called the demo one of his favorite hands-on experiences at Gamescom, while the limited appointment and preview build leave the full game unjudged.
What platforms and release date are confirmed?
Game Informer lists Phantom Blade Zero for PlayStation 5 and PC. S-Game’s official site lists October 29, 2026. The PlayStation Blog announcement also gives October 29, with October 28 in the US and select regions. Check current store listings for the availability and timing that apply to your region.

What weapons and difficulty modes has S-Game described?
In the PlayStation Blog post, Liang says players can unlock more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons, called Phantom Edges, then upgrade and pair them with accessories. These are developer feature claims, not counts independently verified in the preview.

What can a player reasonably conclude from this preview?
The session offers promising signs for players drawn to acrobatic sword combat and route-based exploration: the writer praised movement and singled out a mechanically varied boss. It also raises a specific point to watch in the finished game: at least one early encounter felt overly staged to him, despite not using QTEs. Because the session was brief and selectively advanced, it cannot establish how varied combat remains across the full campaign, how the modes compare in practice, or how the game performs technically.
