The Phanteks EX5 is a mid-tower PC case designed to separate component areas and direct fresh air toward the motherboard and graphics card. That is the intended airflow design—not proof that it cools better than a well-configured conventional case. The practical questions are whether its clearances suit your parts and which EX5 configuration includes the cooling hardware you need.

How the EX5’s airflow design works

Phanteks describes the EX5 as a compartmentalized case that gives key components dedicated areas. A pre-installed 120 mm fan behind the motherboard is intended to direct air toward the VRMs and memory while helping move graphics-card heat away from nearby components. Phanteks also identifies the CPU socket area and M.2 SSDs as targets of this focused airflow. These are the manufacturer’s stated airflow paths, not independently established temperature outcomes.

Phanteks describes the concept this way: “A unique compartmentalized design provides direct fresh air intake.” That statement explains the design rationale; it does not establish a measured advantage over other cases. Phanteks EX5 product page

Igor’s Lab characterizes “Air Curtain” as Phanteks’ marketing term and notes that results depend on installed components, fan speeds, ambient temperature, and installation conditions. The cooling effect of the layout should therefore be treated as a design claim rather than a guarantee for a particular PC.

#1 Best Overall

  • MOTHERBOARD COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with ATX and Micro-ATX (mATX) form factors.
  • MASSIVE GPU CLEARANCE: Accommodates graphics cards based on primary PCIe placement—up to 4.6 slots (Slot 1 entry ATX and mATX boards), 3.6 slots (Standard Slot 2 ATX), or 2.6 slots (Slot 3).
  • INTERIOR FEATURES: Integrated ARGB lighting, 40mm cable clearance, Velcro cable ties and server-style GPU mounting bracket

Does the Phanteks EX5 cool a GPU better?

The available figures do not establish that it does. Igor’s Lab reports manufacturer-provided temperature ranges of 54–68 °C for processors and 57–76 °C for graphics cards during 20-minute gaming sessions. The year of the manufacturer’s data is not stated in that coverage, and the figures are not independent measurements.

Igor’s Lab says the supporting materials omit important test details, including ambient temperature, fan speeds, power limits, firmware, specific games, and a comparison case. It also notes inconsistent processor names in the materials. Without those details and a controlled comparison, the reported ranges cannot show whether the EX5 outperforms a conventional mesh case or predict temperatures in your build. TechTimes reported on September 10, 2026, that reviewers had not yet answered whether the EX5 cools better than a good mesh-front case with well-placed fans. That is a dated account of the review state at that time, not a claim about what reviews may exist now. The sources cited here do not establish an independent comparative thermal result. EX5, EX5 Plus, and EX5 Max: what changes?

Configuration Included equipment What to plan for
EX5 Pre-installed 120 mm fan behind the motherboard You choose the CPU cooling solution. The case supports a side-mounted radiator up to 360 mm.
EX5 Plus Glacier One 360S25-SE AIO with concealed tubing Confirm the included equipment and fit for the regional listing you are considering.
EX5 Max Plus configuration and a 6-inch display Confirm the exact configuration in the regional listing.

Phanteks says the Plus and Max use a single-frame S25 ARGB fan assembly with one cable for the fan frame. Included equipment can vary by listing, so check the exact model and regional product page before buying. Phanteks EX5 release Igor’s Lab configuration coverage

Check these clearances before choosing parts

For the EX5 model listed as PH-EX526_DBK01, Phanteks specifies a 449 × 234 × 474 mm (17.67 × 9.21 × 18.66 in) chassis. It supports ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX motherboards. The limits below are more useful for checking a planned build than the case’s exterior dimensions alone.

Part or feature Published EX5 specification Fit implication
Graphics-card length Up to 358 mm Check your card’s full length, including any protruding parts that affect installation.
Graphics-card thickness Up to 93 mm (4.6 slots) from PCIe slot 1; 73 mm (3.6 slots) from slot 2; 53 mm (2.6 slots) from slot 3 The available thickness depends on the position of the motherboard’s first PCIe slot. The 73 mm figure is not a universal limit.
CPU cooler height Up to 72 mm Compare this with the cooler’s stated height; many tower-style air coolers exceed the limit.
Side radiator Up to 360 mm; technical coverage lists a maximum radiator envelope of 413 × 134 × 60 mm Check the radiator and fan assembly dimensions, not just the radiator’s nominal size.
Power supply length Up to 210 mm Verify the PSU length and the clearance required for its cables.
Storage positions One 3.5-inch HDD and one 2.5-inch SSD Plan within those listed positions.
Front I/O Two USB 3.0 ports, one USB-C 3.2 Gen 2×2 port, combined microphone/headphone jack, power and reset buttons Check that your motherboard’s front-panel connections support the ports you want to use.

Phanteks states that vertical GPU installation is not supported. A card that meets the length limit may still be too thick for its PCIe-slot position, so check both measurements against your motherboard and card. Phanteks EX5 specifications Igor’s Lab radiator-envelope details

What to verify for your build

  1. Identify the exact EX5 variant. Confirm whether the listing is for the base EX5, Plus, or Max and verify its included cooling hardware and display.
  2. Measure the graphics card in two dimensions. Compare its length with the 358 mm maximum, then check thickness against the limit for your motherboard’s first PCIe slot position.
  3. Choose CPU cooling that fits. For an air cooler, check its height against the 72 mm limit. For a side radiator, verify its complete dimensions and installation requirements against the case’s available envelope.
  4. Check the remaining hardware. Confirm PSU length, storage needs, motherboard size, and whether the motherboard supports the front-panel ports you plan to use.
