Yes. A 2022 peer-reviewed study detected PFAS in every anti-fog spray and cloth product it tested. The highest reported concentrations were 25,000 μg/mL in sprays and 185,000 μg per gram in cloths. Those figures describe a small set of samples—not every product on sale, and not a measure of the amount a person absorbs during use.
What the 2022 study tested
Herkert and colleagues analyzed four commercial anti-fog sprays, five anti-fog cloth products, and two commercial fluorosurfactant formulations suspected of being used to make anti-fog products. The study, published in Environmental Science & Technology, examined several classes of PFAS and measured total organic fluorine (TOF) as a broader measure of organic fluorine in each sample. The researchers detected fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) and fluorotelomer ethoxylates (FTEOs) in all tested products and formulations. The 6:2 FTOH and 6:2 FTEO polymeric series predominated. One cloth and one formulation also contained longer-chain fluorotelomer series.

The study reported maximum PFAS concentrations of 25,000 μg/mL in the tested sprays and 185,000 μg per gram of cloth in the tested cloth products. These are maxima among the samples examined, not market-wide averages or estimates for every brand.

TOF is a separate measurement: it captures organic fluorine more broadly, rather than only the quantified PFAS compounds. The tested sprays ranged from 190 to 20,700 μg/mL TOF; the cloths ranged from 44,200 to 131,500 μg per gram. Quantified FTOHs and FTEOs accounted for 1–99% of TOF mass, so the identified compounds did not explain all measured organic fluorine in every sample.

These spray and cloth figures use different units and should not be compared as if they were the same kind of concentration. PFAS maxima and TOF ranges are also different measures; one should not be substituted for the other.

What the cell tests do—and do not—show
All four tested sprays and both commercial formulations showed significant cytotoxicity and adipogenic activity in a murine 3T3-L1 cell model. Adipogenic activity included triglyceride accumulation and/or pre-adipocyte proliferation. The authors suggested FTEOs contributed substantially to adipogenic activity in the sprays.

What consumers can conclude about products today
The study establishes that PFAS were present in the particular products analyzed in 2022. It does not establish the PFAS composition of products currently sold in 2026, whether a specific current brand contains PFAS, or whether any product is reliably PFAS-free. It also does not support a blanket claim that all anti-fog sprays or cloths contain PFAS.
For a current product, a 2022 study of other samples cannot confirm its ingredients. A product-specific statement from the manufacturer or independent testing would be needed to substantiate a current PFAS-free claim; this study does not provide such a comparison.

How to read claims about PFAS in anti-fog products
- Check the sample scope: The paper tested four sprays and five cloths, not a representative survey of the market.
- Keep units attached: Spray concentrations are reported per milliliter; cloth concentrations are reported per gram.
- Separate targeted PFAS from TOF: TOF is a broader measurement, and identified FTOHs and FTEOs accounted for only part of it in some samples.
- Separate cell activity from human risk: The 3T3-L1 results do not quantify exposure or demonstrate harm to users.
