A report published on October 24, 2024, said Peter Todd was going into hiding after filmmaker Cullen Hoback accused him of being Satoshi Nakamoto in HBO’s documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery. Todd denied the accusation. That report describes events at the time; it does not verify Todd’s whereabouts today or establish that he is Satoshi.
Who accused Peter Todd of being Satoshi Nakamoto?
Filmmaker Cullen Hoback made the accusation in his HBO documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery. Futurism’s Victor Tangermann reported on October 24, 2024, that Hoback identified Todd, a Canadian cryptographer and software developer, as his leading candidate.
Hoback defended the film’s case while acknowledging its limits. As quoted in Tangermann’s report, he said, “While of course we can’t outright say he is Satoshi, I think that we make a very strong case.” That is Hoback’s assessment of his documentary, not independent proof of Todd’s identity.

How did Peter Todd respond?
Todd denied being Satoshi. Tangermann’s report quotes him, via Wired, saying, “for the record, I am not Satoshi.” Todd also described the accusation as a marketing move intended to draw attention to the film.
#1 Best Overall
Hoback suggested that Todd’s denial was strategic. That, too, is the filmmaker’s interpretation; the report does not establish Todd’s motive.
Why did the report say Todd was going into hiding?
Tangermann reported that Todd said dozens of people had flooded his email inbox asking for money. Todd warned that falsely presenting someone of ordinary means as extraordinarily wealthy could put them at risk. His warning, reproduced in the report, was: “Obviously, falsely claiming that ordinary people of ordinary wealth are extraordinarily rich exposes them to threats like robbery and kidnapping.”
Rank #2
The report does not document a confirmed robbery, kidnapping, or specific threat against Todd. Its “going into hiding” framing belongs to the October 24, 2024, report and should not be read as confirmation of his current location or circumstances.

No. The available report presents Hoback’s argument and Todd’s denial, but it does not provide enough evidence to independently determine who created Bitcoin. Hoback himself said the film could not outright say Todd was Satoshi. The accusation should therefore remain attributed to Hoback and the documentary, rather than stated as fact.
Rank #3
The report also quotes Meredith Patterson, widow of cryptographer Len Sassaman, reflecting on the intrusive speculation around efforts to identify Satoshi and saying she felt sorry for Todd. Her comments provide context about the personal impact of such speculation; they do not corroborate the accusation.
