The argument was about two different kinds of “owning”: copying an NFT’s image file and holding the blockchain token associated with it. Saving or screenshotting the image does not transfer the token; owning the token does not, by itself, make someone the artwork’s copyright owner.
What happened in the “right-click saved their NFT” dispute?
In a report updated November 6, 2021, Futurism described a Twitter exchange involving an NFT associated with “Lazy Lions #348.” A user objected to screenshots of NFTs, writing, “You are mad that you don’t own the art that I own. Delete that screenshot.” The user was not named in the report.
SaeedDiCaprio replied: “I could make a whole NFT collection of screenshots of me right clicking and saving the image and sell it.” Futurism said bids for Lazy Lions #348 had passed $5,000 at the time the article was written. That is a historical report, not a current price or valuation. The article described the collection as hosted on OpenSea; it does not establish the work’s current owner, listing, or availability. Right-clicking and saving, or taking a screenshot, makes a copy of the visible image file. It does not, by that act alone, transfer the blockchain token associated with the image. The token is a separate digital record; the image and the token are not the same thing.

This distinction explains the joke: someone can copy the picture while someone else holds the token connected to it. Making or selling a new NFT based on a saved image would be a separate act, and the exchange does not establish whether that act—or any particular screenshot—would be lawful. Copyright and other rights depend on the work, applicable law, and any license or permission involved.
Does owning an NFT mean you own the art?
Not automatically. A 2022 Harvard Journal of Sports & Entertainment Law article explains that an NFT holder usually owns the token linked to a particular digital copy of a photograph, not the photograph’s copyright. Copyright ownership and permissions depend on the rights granted for the specific work; holding a token alone does not establish that the holder can control copying or reuse. The cited materials do not establish the copyright or license terms for Lazy Lions #348, so the dispute cannot settle who had what rights in that particular artwork. The practical question is not simply “Who owns the NFT?” but also “What rights, if any, were granted with this work?”

Why might an NFT holder care if the image can be copied?
An NFT’s claimed value may involve more than exclusive access to an image file. Provenance, community membership, access, perks, or status can matter to some holders. These are possible features, not benefits every NFT includes, and they do not make an image impossible to copy.

Futurism connected the exchange to the phrase “right-clicker mentality,” a term used in NFT circles and in mockery of NFT ownership claims. The article attributed the phrase to NFT collector and creator Midwit Milhouse, who compared the distinction to a homemade gold-coated steak versus eating at Salt Bae’s restaurant. In his framing, the draw was the restaurant experience and “flex,” not simply the steak’s ingredients. That analogy describes a way people frame perceived value; it does not prove an NFT has objective or lasting value.

What the exchange does—and does not—show
- It shows a difference: copying an image file and holding a blockchain token are separate acts.
- It does not establish copyright: a token holder does not automatically receive copyright in the associated artwork.
- It does not answer legality: the report is not a legal ruling on screenshotting or reusing this image.
- It does not give a current market price: the reported $5,000-plus bids were from the 2021 article.
