Verdict: Perplexity Comet is worth trying if you regularly research across many tabs or want supervised help with repetitive, low-risk web tasks. It is not yet an obvious replacement for Chrome, Safari, or Firefox for everyone—and I would not give it unrestricted access to a primary password manager, banking account, private corporate systems, or sensitive email.
Comet is a free Chromium-based browser for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. However, the browser download, ordinary browsing, basic AI assistance, and autonomous Browser Agent actions are not the same product tier: Perplexity’s current plan table lists Browser Agent queries as unavailable on Free, while Pro and Max include access subject to limits. That distinction is central to whether Comet represents good value.
This review reflects the current product documentation and independent security and accuracy research available as of August 9, 2026. It does not invent a personal speed benchmark or claim a specific device test that was not performed. Where Perplexity describes an intended capability, it is labeled as such rather than presented as a guarantee that every workflow will work reliably.

What is Perplexity Comet?
Comet is a complete Chromium-based web browser with Perplexity’s search and AI features built into the browsing experience. It is not simply a Perplexity sidebar added to Chrome.
#1 Best Overall
- Reliable Plug and Play: The USB receiver provides a reliable wireless connection up to 33 ft (1), so you can forget about drop-outs and delays and you can take it wherever you use your computer
- Type in Comfort: The design of this keyboard creates a comfortable typing experience thanks to the low-profile, quiet keys and standard layout with full-size F-keys, number pad, and arrow keys
- Durable and Resilient: This full-size wireless keyboard features a spill-resistant design (2), durable keys and sturdy tilt legs with adjustable height
- Long Battery Life: MK270 combo features a 36-month keyboard and 12-month mouse battery life (3), along with on/off switches allowing you to go months without the hassle of changing batteries
- Easy to Use: This wireless keyboard and mouse combo features 8 multimedia hotkeys for instant access to the Internet, email, play/pause, and volume so you can easily check out your favorite sites
The browser includes conventional features such as bookmarks, imports, page translation, Chrome extension compatibility, default-browser settings, tabs, downloads, and built-in ad blocking. Perplexity Search is the default search engine. The AI layer can summarize the current page, answer questions about selected content, translate or explain material, analyze several tabs, respond to voice commands, and—in supported workflows—take actions on websites.
Perplexity lists Comet for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Linux is not listed on the current public product page, so Linux users should not assume that a supported native version exists. Country-level availability can also vary by app-store listing, rollout, or organizational policy.
Comet should also be distinguished from Perplexity Computer. Computer is a separate, broader digital-worker product. Its capabilities should not automatically be attributed to every Comet installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssistant versus Agent
The most important distinction in Comet is between Assistant and Agent:
| Capability | Comet Assistant | Comet Agent |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Understands and explains what you are viewing | Performs actions on your behalf |
| Summarizes a page | Yes | Yes |
| Answers questions about a tab | Yes | Yes |
| Compares tabs | Yes, where permitted | Yes, where permitted |
| Clicks and navigates | Limited or context-dependent | Yes |
| Fills forms | Not its primary role | Yes |
| Email and calendar actions | Not its primary role | Yes, with integrations and permissions |
| Risk | Mostly information and privacy exposure | Information exposure plus action, account, and transaction risk |
A page summary and an agent that can send an email are both AI features, but they are not equivalent. The first primarily interprets content. The second can change the outside world. Comet reviews that call every interaction “agentic” blur both the useful distinction and the security boundary.
Is Comet free?
The browser is free to download, but its most distinctive autonomous feature is plan-gated.
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Can I download Comet without paying? | Yes. Perplexity presents it as a free download. |
| Can I browse normally for free? | Yes. |
| Can I use some AI features without an account? | Perplexity says basic browsing and some basic AI features are available before signing in. |
| Are Browser Agent queries available on Free? | Perplexity’s current plan comparison lists them as unavailable on Free. |
| Do Pro and Max include Browser Agent access? | Yes, subject to plan limits and usage allowances that can change. |
| What is Max’s listed price? | $200 per month or $2,000 per year when purchased on the web. |
Perplexity does not present Browser Agent access as an unlimited permanent specification. Pro and Max have monthly or usage-based allowances, and the limits may change. Check the current plan comparison before subscribing.
Max provides the highest Browser Agent access among the consumer tiers, but its price makes it difficult to recommend solely for occasional browser automation. Enterprise plans have separate administrative controls, limits, and policies.
The accurate description is therefore: Comet is a free browser with free basic assistance, while the feature that makes it meaningfully autonomous requires a paid plan.
Installation, accounts, and compatibility
Do you need a Perplexity account?
No account is required for basic browsing and some basic AI functions, according to Perplexity’s account guidance. Signing in unlocks more capabilities and higher limits, and enables saved history and cross-device preferences. Do not assume that signing in creates a complete Chrome-style profile synchronization of every browser setting and credential.
Can you import Chrome data?
On desktop, the documented path is:
Settings → Import bookmarks and settings
Comet is Chromium-based and supports common browser migration options. Check the import dialog carefully for the categories offered by the current build, especially bookmarks, history, saved passwords, autofill data, and settings. Importing is not the same as synchronizing: an imported password database or autofill record creates a sensitive local data store that deserves separate consideration.
Recommended Free Tools
What happens to extensions?
Chrome extension compatibility is broad because Comet uses Chromium, but compatibility does not mean that every extension behaves exactly as it does in Chrome. Perplexity’s enterprise documentation says extensions may need to be reinstalled and reconfigured; extension data does not transfer seamlessly.
That matters for extensions that store accounts, configuration, local databases, or security-sensitive permissions. A list of installed extensions is not a complete migration of their data or state.

Can Comet be the default browser?
Yes, the desktop editions support conventional default-browser settings. Whether it should be your default is a separate question. Test the sites and extensions you actually depend on before changing your system-wide default.
What about enterprise devices?
Perplexity documents Comet for macOS and Windows enterprise deployments and says it supports more than 500 Chromium-based management policies. That is useful for a controlled pilot, but policy support is not the same as security approval. An organization should review data processing, identity integrations, browser extensions, agent permissions, logging, and incident response before broad deployment. See Comet for Enterprise and Comet policies and controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Where Comet is genuinely useful
1. Reading and summarizing pages
Comet’s most defensible use is as a conversational reading layer. It can summarize a long article, explain technical language, translate a page, answer questions about selected text, and extract information without requiring constant copying and pasting into a separate AI service.
That is particularly useful for:
- Long research articles and documentation
- Several product pages that need to be compared
- PDFs and pages containing tables
- Forum or Reddit discussions
- YouTube pages where a usable transcript is available
- News and reference material that would otherwise require many open tabs
There are limits. A summary can omit footnotes, disclaimers, table columns, qualifications, or information hidden behind a login or paywall. A confident answer is not proof that the source contained the claim.
A 2026 academic audit examined browser summarizers across Comet, Chrome with Gemini, and Edge with Copilot. Across all three systems and 13,777 articles producing 41,331 summaries, the summaries averaged 82.8% sentence-level factual support; 2.5% of sentences contradicted the source and 14.7% could not be verified against it. The study does not provide a standalone Comet score, so 82.8% must not be treated as Comet’s individual accuracy. It is useful as a warning that browser summaries are helpful reading aids, not perfect transcriptions. Read the audit.
2. Comparing multiple tabs
Cross-tab analysis is the feature most likely to save serious researchers time. You can ask Comet to compare sources, identify disagreements, extract prices or specifications, or turn several pages into a table.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
However, context control matters. If ten unrelated tabs are open, the agent may have more opportunities to select the wrong material. Perplexity recommends explicit tab references and constraints. A useful prompt is:
@tab Compare only these five sources. Create a table with each source’s publication date, main claim, evidence, and limitations. Separate statements directly supported by the tabs from your own inferences, and identify disagreements.
Then verify that every row came from the intended page. Cross-tab convenience should reduce tab switching—not eliminate source inspection.
3. Research and fact-finding
Comet is best viewed as research assistance rather than research judgment. It can collect, organize, and explain information, but the user still needs to evaluate source quality, conflicts of interest, missing evidence, and whether a claim is current.
Use extra caution with legal, medical, financial, political, and commercially motivated topics. Ask Comet to distinguish direct evidence from inference, cite the source tab for each important claim, and call out uncertainty. Never let a polished comparison table substitute for reading the primary document when the decision matters.
4. Browser commands
Commands such as grouping tabs, finding duplicates, translating pages, organizing a project, or opening relevant sources are a natural fit for an AI browser. They are also a useful test of how much control Comet gives the user.
Before relying on commands that close, move, download, or modify anything, check whether Comet previews the action, asks for confirmation, and makes the result reversible. A command such as “close tabs I have not used in three days” is convenient but should not be treated as harmless until its scope is clear.

5. Forms and shopping research
Perplexity markets Comet for product research, shopping workflows, checkout navigation, and form completion. These are promising uses for supervised automation:
- Compare product specifications across several stores.
- Find the cheapest matching item under stated constraints.
- Fill a harmless form using dummy information.
- Add a product to a cart without completing payment.
- Navigate to checkout and stop before the purchase.
Do not use a real payment card for an initial experiment. A successful trip from product page to checkout does not prove that Comet will correctly interpret shipping details, substitutions, discounts, quantities, return policies, CAPTCHA prompts, or the difference between researching an item and buying it.
6. Email and calendar
Gmail and Calendar connectors are opt-in and can be revoked through settings, according to Perplexity’s privacy FAQ. They can make Comet useful for tasks such as finding messages that need replies, summarizing recent mail, locating open calendar slots, and drafting—but not sending—responses or invitations.
Use a test account or a narrowly scoped account first. A safe progression is:
- Summarize unread messages from the last three days.
- Find emails requiring a reply.
- Draft a response without sending it.
- Find available calendar slots.
- Draft an invitation without sending it.
- Review permissions, activity, and the proposed action.
Do not begin by granting access to your primary inbox and asking Comet to clean it up. Verify what context it reads, what confirmations it requires, whether an audit trail exists, and how to revoke access.

Perplexity documented voice mode with screen awareness, voice navigation, and continuity across tabs in its February 25, 2026 update. The documented shortcuts were Option + Shift + V on Mac and Alt + Shift + V on Windows. Shortcuts and labels can change, so confirm them in the current build.
Voice is convenient when researching or navigating, but spoken instructions can be ambiguous. Use explicit confirmation before any message, purchase, deletion, login, or permission change.
Can Comet replace Chrome or Safari?
For some people, yes. As a universal replacement, not yet.
Chromium gives Comet a strong starting point for ordinary website compatibility, but Chromium compatibility is not Chrome equivalence. A serious replacement test should include the actual services you use:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Google Docs, Sheets, Slack, Notion, and other web applications

- Password managers, passkeys, and WebAuthn
- Chrome Web Store extensions
- Multiple profiles and Incognito mode
- Session restoration after closing the browser
- Large Chrome-profile imports
- Mobile browsing and battery behavior
The official documentation establishes a Chromium base, extension support, imports, and standard browser features. It does not establish that Comet is faster, more stable, or less memory-intensive than Chrome, Safari, or Firefox on your hardware. Until those are measured on a repeatable test setup, claims about startup speed, RAM, battery life, or crash rates should be treated as anecdotal.
Keep a conventional browser available even if Comet becomes your default. This is especially important when an agent task stalls, a website blocks automation, a CAPTCHA appears, an extension breaks, or a plan allowance runs out.
Privacy: what Comet says it does by default
Perplexity’s current Comet Assistant privacy documentation says that, by default, Assistant does not access or upload your full browsing history, the complete list of open tabs, cookies or site data, passwords or autofill data, local files, or text typed into websites unless you explicitly send that information in a request.
That is a conditional boundary, not a promise that nothing is ever processed in the cloud. If you ask Comet to summarize the current page, analyze selected text, compare another tab, search personal context, read email, or perform an action, the relevant page, tab, account, or selection may be sent for processing.

| Situation | What to understand |
|---|---|
| No request requiring private context | Perplexity says the Assistant does not access or upload the categories above by default. |
| Summarize the current page | Relevant page content is processed to answer the request. |
| Compare tabs or use selected text | The requested tab or selection may be sent as context. |
| Use Gmail or Calendar | Connected-service data becomes part of the workflow and permission boundary. |
| Ask about personal browsing context | Relevant history or personal context may be used if explicitly requested. |
Perplexity says page content, history items, or tab context used in a request may be retained for up to 30 days to support Library and query-history features, unless the relevant thread is changed or deleted. The documented controls are at:
Settings → Privacy and security → Comet Assistant
Those controls include disabling the Assistant and blocking it on particular websites. Review them before connecting services or using Comet on sensitive pages.
The practical rule is simple: “Stored locally by default” does not mean “never processed by Perplexity.” Treat every explicit request for page, tab, account, or personal context as a decision to transmit that context for processing.
Security: the risk is not ordinary browsing—it is delegated action
Prompt injection is the central problem
An AI browser receives instructions from the user and from untrusted material on webpages, emails, calendar invitations, comments, images, and documents. A malicious page can contain hidden or visually misleading text telling the agent to ignore the user, access another account, retrieve a secret, or send information elsewhere.
That makes agentic browsing different from asking a chatbot to summarize text. The browser has tools, sessions, permissions, and the ability to click or submit forms.
What security researchers reported
In 2025, Brave reported a Comet prompt-injection attack in which hidden instructions in a Reddit post attempted to make Comet access account information, read an OTP from Gmail, and exfiltrate it. Brave said Perplexity acknowledged the issue and that its initial fix appeared incomplete before later testing indicated a patch. Brave later reported a separate screenshot-based prompt-injection vector. These reports are historical research, not proof that the exact exploits still work in the August 2026 build. See Brave’s original disclosure and its screenshot-based disclosure.
On March 3, 2026, Zenity disclosed the PleaseFix vulnerability family and described two Comet attack paths:
- A malicious calendar invitation could manipulate an agent-authorized workflow into reading and exfiltrating local files.
- A workflow involving Comet and a password manager could be manipulated into exposing credentials or enabling account takeover.
Zenity said the local-file issue was addressed with a code-level boundary blocking autonomous file:// access, and reported successful fix verification on February 13, 2026. Zenity also described collaboration and hardening related to the password-manager path. The careful conclusion is that Zenity reported these paths and Perplexity addressed them; a patch for particular attack paths does not prove that all indirect prompt-injection variants are solved.
Independent research presented at the ICLR 2026 Workshop on Agents in the Wild found that Comet did not follow the injected webpage instructions in one simple pseudo-prompt-injection test, unlike one other tested agent. The same study found that Comet could use cross-origin conversation or browsing-history context in at least some tests, and warned that resisting a naïve injection does not establish resistance to sophisticated attacks. Read the study.
Perplexity has published its own discussion of Comet prompt-injection mitigation and describes defense in depth involving detection, guardrails, user confirmation, and tool-policy enforcement. Its BrowseSafe research also treats the problem as an active security challenge, not a solved one.
How to use Comet safely
- Start with a separate browser profile. Do not begin with your primary identity, password manager, or private work accounts.
- Use a test Gmail and Calendar account. Connect only what is necessary, then revoke access after testing.
- Do not delegate banking, payments, password changes, or sensitive corporate workflows.
- Review every proposed send, purchase, deletion, download, login, and permission change.
- Stop the agent when its plan mentions an irrelevant account, file, website, or secret.
- Be cautious with suspicious pages, email, calendar invitations, documents, and comments.
- Do not treat Incognito as an agent-security boundary. It does not undo permissions already granted to connected services.
- Keep Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or another conventional browser available.
- Revoke integrations when the experiment ends.
Perplexity’s own Comet resources advise users to review actions, stop the agent when behavior looks wrong, and avoid suspicious content. Those are sensible requirements, not optional fine print.
A practical test protocol before making Comet your default
Anyone publishing or relying on a hands-on verdict should record the conditions. Browser-agent behavior can vary by operating system, browser build, plan, extensions, connected services, and usage limits.

Use a repeatable task set
- Five ordinary browsing tasks.
- Five page summaries: a news article, PDF, product page, video transcript, and technical document.
- Three comparisons involving five to ten tabs, including one irrelevant tab.
- Three research tasks with conflicting sources.
- Three browser commands involving tab organization.
- Three harmless form-filling tasks with dummy data.
- Two shopping tasks stopped before payment.

- Several deliberate failure cases involving logins, CAPTCHA, changed layouts, blocked automation, and the wrong tab.
Record completion, time to a useful result, retries, manual interventions, unexpected actions, citation quality, uncertainty, and whether the browser stayed responsive. Also note whether a task consumes a Browser Agent allowance. Do not turn a single successful marketing-style demonstration into a reliability percentage.
Comet compared with other browsers
Comet’s closest alternatives depend on what you value:
| Alternative | Why it may be a better fit |
|---|---|
| Chrome with Gemini | Strong Chrome compatibility and an established extension and profile ecosystem. |
| Edge with Copilot | Natural choice for Microsoft 365 users and organizations already standardized on Edge. |
| Brave with Leo | Worth considering if privacy-oriented browser positioning matters more than broad autonomous action. |
| Firefox and its AI features | Better fit for users prioritizing browser independence and a non-Chromium option. |
| ChatGPT Atlas | Relevant for users already invested in ChatGPT’s browser-agent workflow. |
| Dia or Claude for Chrome | Potentially better for users who prefer a different conversational interface or model ecosystem. |
| Opera Neon and similar agentic browsers | Worth comparing for autonomous task execution, pricing, and confirmation behavior. |
Do not compare one product’s marketing examples with another product’s benchmark results. Use the same prompts and safety boundaries across browsers. A useful independent browser-agent study included Chrome/Gemini, Edge/Copilot, Brave Leo, Firefox AI Mode, Claude for Chrome, ChatGPT Atlas, and Perplexity Comet, making it a useful starting point for comparing capabilities and risks rather than a universal ranking.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Who should use Comet?
Comet is a good candidate for:
- Researchers and students managing many related tabs
- Knowledge workers who repeatedly extract and compare information
- Perplexity users who want search and browser context in one place
- People who can verify AI output before acting on it
- Users willing to supervise low-risk automation
Who should keep another browser primary?
Keep Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or another conventional browser as your main environment if you:
- Need maximum compatibility and predictable stability
- Depend on a large, carefully configured extension ecosystem
- Handle financial accounts, credentials, private files, or confidential business systems
- Want a privacy-minimal browser rather than one that conditionally sends requested context to a cloud service
- Have little tolerance for latency, retries, changing model behavior, or usage limits
- Expect autonomous workflows to run without close supervision
Final verdict by use case
| Use case | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Reading and summarizing | Strong. Useful, but verify important claims and omitted qualifications. |
| Comparing multiple pages | Strong with controlled context. Use explicit tab references and source attribution. |
| General browsing | Promising. Test your extensions, web apps, PDFs, profiles, and media services. |
| Shopping research | Useful with supervision. Stop before payment until you trust the workflow. |
| Email and calendar | Powerful but sensitive. Start with a test account and draft rather than send. |
| Form filling | Promising but inconsistent by site. Expect CAPTCHA and login failures. |
| Financial or password-manager tasks | Avoid unrestricted delegation. The security consequences are too high. |
| Enterprise deployment | Pilot only. Use management policies and conduct a security review. |
| Complete Chrome or Safari replacement | Not for everyone. Comet’s AI advantage does not erase ordinary-browser trade-offs. |
| Worth trying | Yes, in a separate profile. |
Bottom line
Comet is most compelling as an AI research workspace that happens to be a browser. Its page understanding, cross-tab analysis, and supervised low-risk automation can reduce repetitive work for people who live in tabs.
But the agent is also the reason to be cautious. Once Comet can read connected services, fill forms, navigate accounts, or submit actions, webpage content becomes part of the security model. Reported vulnerabilities have been patched or mitigated, and Comet has resisted some basic injection tests, but indirect prompt injection and context leakage remain active risks.
Try Comet if you want an AI-assisted research browser. Do not install it expecting a flawless Chrome replacement, and do not give it unrestricted access to your most sensitive accounts until you have tested the current build, reviewed its permissions, and decided that the convenience is worth the risk.

Can I use Perplexity Comet without paying?
Yes. The browser is free to download, and Perplexity says basic browsing and some basic AI features can be used without an account. However, the current plan comparison lists Browser Agent queries as unavailable on Free. Pro and Max include agent access subject to limits.
Does Comet replace Chrome?
It can replace Chrome for some research-heavy users, but not universally. Comet is Chromium-based and supports many Chrome extensions, yet extension data may need to be reconfigured and ordinary-browser performance or compatibility should be tested on the sites you use.
Is Perplexity Comet safe to use with a password manager?
Unrestricted use is not advisable. Security researchers have reported attack paths involving Comet and password-manager workflows. Specific issues have been addressed or mitigated, but prompt injection remains an active risk. Use a separate profile and avoid connecting your primary password manager during initial testing.
Does Comet upload my browsing history?
Perplexity says Comet Assistant does not access or upload full browsing history, the complete list of open tabs, passwords, autofill data, local files, or typed website text by default. If you explicitly ask it to use a page, tab, history item, email, calendar, or other personal context, the relevant information may be sent for processing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Does Comet work on Linux?
Linux is not listed among the platforms on Perplexity’s current public Comet page. The listed platforms are Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, so Linux users should not assume there is an officially supported native release.
What is the difference between Comet Assistant and Comet Agent?
Assistant primarily reads, summarizes, explains, and answers questions about browser content. Agent performs actions such as clicking, navigating, filling forms, and working with connected email or calendar services. Agent tasks therefore carry substantially greater privacy and security risk.
The Bottom Line
Best for: tab-heavy research, page comparison, extraction, and supervised low-risk web chores.
Not best for: unrestricted access to banking, password managers, confidential work systems, or anyone seeking the most predictable and privacy-minimal browser.
