Choose The Long Dark if you want a mature, solo-focused winter survival game with an open-ended Survival Mode and a completed five-episode story. Choose Permafrost if playing online with up to three friends is the deciding factor and you are comfortable with a game that entered Steam Early Access on October 9, 2026.
Those recommendations come from the games’ officially described modes and release status, not from hands-on testing. The practical choice is therefore less about declaring one universally better and more about deciding whether you value completed solo content or four-player co-op in a still-developing title.

That combination makes Permafrost the direct choice for a group that wants a winter survival game rather than a strictly solo experience. The four-player limit means one host group can include the player and three friends; it is not an unlimited-server or massively multiplayer design based on the published feature description.
What is available in Early Access
Permafrost launched on Steam Early Access on October 9, 2026. The current store description says the foundation is implemented, including multiple biomes, items, building blueprints, crafting recipes, the opening narrative, side quests and four-player co-op.
The developer also lists planned additions: more biomes, quests, non-player characters, enemies, equipment and vehicles. These are development plans, not a guarantee that every item will arrive on a particular schedule or in a particular form. The listing is useful for understanding direction, but it does not independently establish performance, stability, content depth or how complete the campaign feels.
Who should accept that trade-off?
Permafrost is a sensible fit when your friends will play together and you would rather enter a developing game early than wait for a final release. It is a weaker fit if you need a finished narrative, a stable feature set or a reliable endpoint for your purchase. Early Access can mean that systems, balance, available areas and the story’s scope change after you begin.

Two distinct experiences in one purchase
The Long Dark separates its content into open-ended Survival Mode and WINTERMUTE, its episodic story mode. That distinction matters because “survival game” can describe two very different reasons to play: repeating self-directed survival runs or following a defined narrative across episodes.
Hinterland’s Survival Mode materials describe the purchase as including Survival Mode updates and all five WINTERMUTE episodes. Survival Mode is the stronger match for someone who wants an ongoing, solo-focused sandbox rather than a campaign with a final chapter.

WINTERMUTE is complete
Hinterland’s Episode Five announcement says the episode is live, completes the WINTERMUTE story and is a free update for existing owners. That gives The Long Dark a clear advantage for readers who want to start an episodic story knowing that the announced conclusion is available now.
“Complete” applies to the five-episode WINTERMUTE campaign described by Hinterland. It does not mean that every future Survival Mode update has ended, nor does it promise that every edition or storefront has identical packaging. Check the store page for the edition available in your region.

A group may find value in trying new systems together as they arrive, while a solo buyer may care more about whether the narrative and world already feel complete. Do not assume that planned co-op content, vehicles or additional enemies are already present simply because they appear on the developer’s roadmap.

You want a newer setting and structure
Permafrost’s official description combines a frozen post-apocalyptic world with a story-driven sandbox. Exploration, scavenging, crafting and shelter building are the named pillars. If that specific setting and the prospect of discovering a developing world appeal to you, it can be the more appropriate thematic choice even when The Long Dark has the more established release status.

You can tolerate changing content
Buy into Permafrost Early Access with the expectation that the current foundation is only one stage of development. The developer says multiple biomes, items, blueprints, recipes, the opening narrative, side quests and four-player co-op are implemented, while other biomes, quests, NPCs, enemies, equipment and vehicles are planned. That description gives you a concrete checklist of what exists and what remains on the published plan, but it does not establish a delivery date or final quality level.
- Choose it now if co-op and the setting matter more than a finished campaign.
- Wait if you need a stable, complete story before committing time.
- Recheck the Steam listing immediately before purchase because Early Access features and requirements can change.
Choose The Long Dark if you want a finished solo journey
Survival Mode is the open-ended option
The Long Dark is the better fit when the point of play is creating your own long-running survival experience. Hinterland explicitly distinguishes Survival Mode from WINTERMUTE, so you can treat the open-ended mode as its own reason to buy rather than as a side activity attached to the story.

Readers who dislike waiting for unfinished episodes have a straightforward reason to prefer The Long Dark. Episode Five is live, and Hinterland identifies it as the culmination of the five-episode WINTERMUTE story. Existing owners receive that episode as a free update according to the official announcement.
That does not force you to play the episodes in order or prevent you from spending most of your time in Survival Mode; it simply means the purchase includes both the completed narrative campaign and the open-ended mode described by Hinterland.
You need a broader set of named platforms
The Episode Five announcement names Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, GOG and Epic Games Store. That is a broader cited storefront list than the Windows PC requirement information supplied for Permafrost. Confirm the exact edition, region and current support for your device before buying, especially if you are moving between console and PC versions.

- If “difficulty” means surviving alone in an open-ended mode, The Long Dark is the clearer fit because Survival Mode is explicitly presented as open-ended and solo-focused.
