Perfmatters is a paid WordPress optimization plugin for controlling scripts and assets and applying selected frontend and database optimizations. It offers useful controls for site owners who want to reduce unnecessary work on specific pages, but it does not guarantee a faster site: results depend on your theme, plugins, hosting, and configuration. No hands-on testing or five-year usage record is established for this review, so it evaluates the vendor’s published features, guidance, pricing, and release information rather than claiming personal experience.
What Perfmatters does—and what it does not promise
Perfmatters is a set of controls for changing how a WordPress site loads and manages selected resources. Its feature list includes disabling unused scripts, lazy loading images and embedded media, deferring or delaying JavaScript, and cleaning database items such as revisions and spam comments. These are available options, not evidence that every site will improve by enabling them. The effect depends on which assets a site uses and whether the changes preserve the behavior visitors need.
The vendor says its main speed approach is disabling scripts that might not be used on a site. That can be useful when a plugin loads assets on pages that do not need them, but identifying safe exclusions requires care. Perfmatters also offers CSS and JavaScript controls, preloading, font options, and other frontend settings; the feature list is at Perfmatters’ features page.

How it fits alongside a caching plugin
Perfmatters is not simply a replacement for page caching. A caching plugin or hosting layer may generate and serve cached pages; Perfmatters focuses on additional controls such as script management and frontend behavior. They can be used together, but overlapping features may create duplication or conflicts. The appropriate setup depends on what your host and existing plugins already do.
- Check whether your current cache, host, theme, or CDN already provides the optimization you want.
- Consider Perfmatters when you need more specific controls, such as managing scripts or exclusions, that your current setup does not provide.
- Use representative pages to assess whether a change improves performance without breaking layout, interactions, checkout, or other important behavior.
Perfmatters’ documentation includes guidance on combining it with other caching plugins and testing website speed. Consult the current Perfmatters documentation archive for your configuration rather than assuming universal compatibility.
Features and practical trade-offs
| Control | What it is for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Script Manager | Disable selected scripts where they are not needed, potentially reducing requests and page size. | Verify each affected page’s forms, menus, galleries, and other plugin-dependent behavior. |
| Lazy loading | Delay loading images, iframes, or videos until they are needed as a visitor moves through a page. | Check visible and below-the-fold media, especially on key landing pages. |
| JavaScript defer and delay | Change when JavaScript runs, with controls and exclusions available. | Test interactive elements and any scripts that must run early. |
| Database cleanup | Remove selected items such as post revisions and spam comments. | Review cleanup choices and keep appropriate backups before deleting data. |
| Other frontend settings | Options include CSS and JavaScript minification, Remove Unused CSS, preloading, and font-related settings. | Enable changes selectively and inspect the pages and assets they affect. |
How to set it up without breaking a site
Perfmatters’ setup guide divides its recommendations into areas including quick toggles, lazy loading, WooCommerce, CDN, analytics, CSS and JavaScript minification, defer and delay, Remove Unused CSS, preloading, fonts, and Script Manager. Treat that guide as a starting point, not a universal preset: settings that suit one site can disrupt another.
- Start on staging. Install and activate the plugin on a staging copy first where possible. The documentation index covers staging, importing and exporting settings, and clean uninstall.
- Record a baseline. Choose representative pages—such as a homepage, article, and product or checkout page if relevant—and measure them before changing settings. Keep the same test conditions when comparing results.
- Change one setting at a time. Save the change, then inspect the affected pages and test essential interactions. This helps identify which option caused a regression or improvement.
- Be cautious with jQuery Migrate. The vendor recommends leaving “Remove jQuery Migrate” off or testing it separately, particularly with page builders such as Divi or Elementor.
- For WooCommerce, test individually. Shop-specific settings are relevant only to stores; Perfmatters advises testing WooCommerce options one at a time.
- Check CDN overlap. The setup guide says Cloudflare users do not need Perfmatters’ CDN rewrite feature.
- Keep a rollback path. If a page breaks, disable the most recent setting or restore the previous configuration, then retest. Use the current settings and recommendations guide and documentation archive for troubleshooting and configuration-specific instructions.

Quick Recap

Who should consider Perfmatters?
- Potentially a good fit: site owners, publishers, developers, and agencies who need asset-level controls, can test changes, and want selected optimizations beyond their existing cache or host features.
- Less suitable: anyone expecting a guaranteed score increase, unwilling to troubleshoot page behavior, or already well served by overlapping settings in their existing stack.
- For agencies: compare the one-, three-, and unlimited-site tiers against the number of sites you manage and the annual renewal terms, rather than choosing by headline price alone.
