Percona is developing an open-source Valkey proxy intended to help applications built for a single Redis instance connect to Valkey Cluster without rewriting their code. That is the project’s aim, not a demonstrated compatibility guarantee: when The New Stack reported on it on October 8, 2026, public code and releases were still future targets, and the report offered no compatibility tests or performance results.
What the proposed proxy is meant to do
Valkey is an open-source, in-memory data store used for caching and other low-latency workloads. Percona’s planned proxy would sit between an application and a Valkey Cluster, mediating the difference between software that expects one Redis endpoint and a cluster made up of multiple nodes. The goal is to reduce the application-side work needed to make that connection.
The challenge is more than changing a server address. Clustered deployments involve node topology and request routing, and applications may depend on command behavior associated with a single instance. A proxy could handle some of that mismatch, but the report does not establish that it can conceal every cluster-specific behavior or make every Redis application work unchanged.
Why this could matter to Redis users
Some applications were written around a single Redis instance and do not natively account for a distributed cluster. Moving such an application to Valkey Cluster can therefore require code or client changes, even when the underlying data-store role is similar. Percona is targeting that application-compatibility hurdle with an intermediary rather than asking each application to implement cluster awareness itself.

The New Stack reported that commercial Redis products and some cloud services offer proxy layers for this class of problem. Percona general manager Kyle Davis characterized the open-source options as inadequate, saying, “Right now there’s not really any good open source solution for this.” That is Davis’s assessment in an interview, not an independent survey establishing that no alternative exists.
What was announced, and what remained a plan
According to The New Stack’s October 8, 2026 report, Percona had developed an initial version internally and had received approval in late September for the project to become part of Valkey. Percona was moving code from private repositories into the public project. The report described these target dates:

The New Stack named Freshworks as an early user and design partner working with Percona to uncover issues during development. That establishes participation, not a published validation result. The report did not provide Freshworks workload details, a compatibility matrix, a benchmark, or a production-readiness assessment.

Davis said the project could reach “a whole different layer of applications that really didn’t have a good option.” This describes Percona’s intended audience; it does not establish which applications are supported.
What teams should verify before relying on it
A proxy can reduce application changes only to the extent that its implementation supports the application’s actual commands, client patterns, and operational needs. The announcement does not settle those details. Before planning a migration, teams should look for evidence on:

- Supported Redis and Valkey protocol versions, commands, and client libraries.
- How the proxy routes requests across cluster nodes and handles topology changes or failures.
- Behavior for transactions, scripts, pub/sub, and other application-specific features.
- Authentication, TLS, observability, deployment requirements, and operational failure modes.
- Compatibility tests, independent benchmarks, and production experience relevant to their workload.
These are questions to answer from implementation documentation and testing, not capabilities confirmed by the announcement. A proxy should be evaluated against the application’s real behavior; its presence alone does not prove that code changes, configuration work, or operational changes can be avoided.
How this relates to Percona’s Valkey services
Percona separately documents Valkey packages and migration guidance, and offers Valkey database support services. Those materials establish a broader Valkey offering, but the available sources do not confirm that support covers Valkey-proxy specifically. Organizations considering support should clarify proxy coverage directly with Percona.
