Researchers reported in 2010 that two compounds isolated from the leaves of Piper sanguineispicum showed activity against a Leishmania parasite in a laboratory assay. The finding was an early drug lead—not evidence that the plant or its compounds can treat leishmaniasis in people.
What researchers found
In a 2010 study, Billy Joel Cabanillas and colleagues isolated 10 compounds from the leaves of Piper sanguineispicum: three new caffeic acid esters, four new lignans and three previously known compounds. They tested the compounds against axenic amastigotes of Leishmania amazonensis, a parasite form studied outside host cells. Two caffeic acid esters—compounds 1 and 3—had the strongest reported activity, with IC50 values of 2.0 and 1.8 μM, respectively. The paper also reported moderate cytotoxicity on murine macrophages.
An IC50 is the concentration that inhibits a measured biological response by 50% under the assay conditions. These figures describe laboratory results against the tested parasite forms; they do not show that the compounds work in an animal or person, or that they are safe as medicines.

No. The study did not test the plant as a treatment in people, and the reported assay cannot establish a cure or clinical benefit. The authors’ results were preliminary, and the macrophage cytotoxicity finding is an important qualification to the activity results.

In the Royal Society of Chemistry’s October 27, 2010 report, study author Nicolas Fabre said the results were “very preliminary” and that in-vivo investigations were needed to confirm the esters’ interest. That report also quoted natural-products researcher Felipe Otálvaro comparing the compounds’ assay activity with amphotericin. His comment was an expert reaction, not evidence of equivalent efficacy or a head-to-head clinical comparison.
Which plant does the headline mean?
The plant is Piper sanguineispicum, a member of the Piperaceae family. It is not culinary black pepper (Piper nigrum) or a chili pepper. The RSC report said Chayahuitas people in Peru used its leaves as an anti-inflammatory; that traditional-use account explains context for investigating the plant, but it does not establish antileishmanial effects.

The paper appeared online on October 18, 2010, and in the November 29, 2010 issue of the Journal of Natural Products, volume 73, issue 11, pages 1884–1890. The publication record identifies the paper as “Caffeic Acid Esters and Lignans from Piper sanguineispicum.” It is a historical finding, not a new discovery.
